So my Ultra is here and so far I'm a big fan. It's fast and super-quiet. The only drama I had with the shipment was UPS-induced.
First, when my shipment arrived at my local airport, it quickly departed. But where did it go? There was no "arrived at" entry for 36 hours! It just vanished off the radar until there was a "departed" message from another semi-local facility. That had me nervous for a long time.
Then it arrived quickly at my local facility, where (thanks to Sunday and Memorial Day) it sat for 2-1/2 days, just 10 minutes from me.
When delivery day came, UPS estimated delivery time as 1:30-3:30 local time, as they almost always do. I knew this to be a lie, and made my own estimate of 6pm, based on prior experience with UPS almost always delivering around 6pm. And I was right, delivery time was 6:01pm! I was just happy to get it, despite the goof-ups and delays by UPS.
The driver did have me sign for the package. I can't remember the last time I had to sign for something. But with an expensive delivery I was kind of glad they weren't just dumping it on a doorstep.
After that, setup was easy as I'd prepped everything in advance and had 7 or 8 cables waiting to be plugged in. I did the initial setup, upgraded to the latest MacOS which I knew I'd need to do, then transferred my data from my old Mac to the new using Migration Assistant, which took about another hour. Easy peasy, no issues.
Today I am doing clean-up and getting some apps running with licenses etc. for the new machine (Photoshop, etc.), and I'll be cleaning up and labeling some cables, seeing if I can get the master/slave power to work, and getting on with enjoying my new machine. I'm planning to try to edit and export a video on my M1 MBA and the new Studio for a time comparison.
Good luck to all those still waiting, and thanks to everyone (especially F-Train, OldMacWalking, GFFMATT, davidspry, PurdueRPh and others I am surely forgetting) for the camaraderie and info as we all endured our long waits! You guys made it bearable.
