As a fellow audio guy running on Apollo, I'm not even entirely sure I wouldn't be fine w/ base M1! Was planning on an M1 Pro desktop but I can't really keep holding out. I'm not really mad about getting a higher spec'd machine, though.
I think that audience was where the M1 missed a trick not going up to 32GB RAM. I've not used Apollo, but Logic is starting to get good at using multiple cores now.

My understanding is that comparing unified memory to conventional RAM is not quite apples to apples, but being on an iMac w/ 24GB, that was one spec that left me particularly hesitant to go M1.

At the same time, White Sea Studio has claimed an M1 Mini has been adequate for his needs and he seems like roughly an equally intensive DAW user as me, though I don't think he uses UAD plugins which are externally processed (and probably absolutely don't need to be in 2022).

A 2018 Intel Mac mini with 32GB of RAM (or if you want, 64GB) purchased from OWC/Mac Sales would do what you need and save a lot of money.

32GB RAM: $138
64GB RAM: $290

sometimes import scans in the am turn to departed later in the day. At that point it depends on what they consider "standard service" vs expedited for something like this. The Display and ipad are coming tomorrow from Pennsylvania, so next day to MD for instance. Hard to say, but the 3/21 eta's are hinting a 2 day service out of KY.

The SSD speeds make paging a lot faster, however I've not really seen anything that convinces me the M1 is doing anything special enough to make me consider dropping down to 16GB. This can cause extra wear on the SSD, and there was a recent report on how Apple is achieving those speeds putting data at risk in extreme circumstances.

I do a lot of work with VMs and containers, so physical memory is treated differently.

Yeah, but assuming my next computer will be my DAW for 7+ years I really didn't want to go Intel. Otherwise I'd have just bought another 27" iMac a couple years ago when my Fusion drive started crapping out.

My UPS tracking page details for the Mac Studio indicates 'Next Day Air' as the service:

Yes, I wouldn't go that route if you're looking for a computer that will last you for seven years as your main computer. Apple sold a lot of 2018 minis to people running sample libraries, etc, because it can be equipped cheaply with a fair amount of RAM, but in 2022 I would see it as a medium term tool, not a seven year tool.

mine says standard delivery for the studio and the display on Apple but the UPS track says:
Express Saver or Worldwide Saver : This service provides guaranteed next-business-day delivery to and from most business areas within the country and day-definite delivery for international shipments from more than 215 countries and territories to more than 185 countries and territories.
UPS World Ease product: consolidated customs clearance when you group several shipments into one.

Standard delivery is pertaining to Apple. They don’t use UPS terms on their website AFAIK. The only other types of delivery Apple offers is choosing specific times and now they also have same-day shipping too. But for new products the only thing they offer is what apple calls “standard shipping” but this usually uses either UPS Worldwide express saver or overnight air. Or the FedEx DHL equivalent.

Day 1 (March 8) order to Italy
Base model with 1TB storage BTO option

Initially estimated to get here March 21-23.
Had a nice surprise yesterday when it moved from Processing to preparing for shipment, only to have it completely reversed today - it's now back to processing with the estimate now slipped to Apr 4 - Apr 6 😭
(Actually it just now went back up to "preparing for shipment", still with the Apr 4-6th estimate)

Anybody familiar with BTO knows what this could mean?? I have never ordered BTO before, I trusted the estimates but a very friendly Apple Support agent told me they're essentially bunk...
Then again these are extraordinarily difficult times, between the shutdowns in Shenzhen and general COVID related logistics issues it wouldn't surprise me if there's no precedent for this.
Delivery to Italy won't show as shipped until after the item arrives at the shipper's European hub, usually 1 day before actual delivery. It's a different system than that used in the US. It's frustrating as we missout on all the tracking fun.

Looks like despite canceling my Currys order within 30 minutes of ordering, my base model Mac Studio will be arriving tomorrow. * sigh *

Interesting that you can make an order today for delivery tomorrow. I don't think that there's anywhere in the US or Canada where that's possible. B&H, a major private retailer here, is only assembling a pre-order list with no delivery dates. Best Buy is taking orders for base models, but for shipping middle of next week.
