I thought about it, but I eventually pulled the trigger. The M1 Mac mini I have while is a good machine, 16 GB of memory is simply not enough, especially since I have a lot of apps open and the computer runs 24/7 since I remote into it, the computer is constantly at close to 50% memory pressure and of course, there is the memory leaks. My 16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro doesn't have this issue. Either way, this doesn't give me confidence on the long term use as a home office machine. Also, it seems to have issues with HDMI on the M1 Mac mini with one of the screen sometimes losing picture.

I ordered the base model since it's more than enough and I plan to move everything from the Mac mini to the Mac Studio. Also, I am getting $500 from the App Developer settlement hopefully in the middle of this year to help cover it. Also, I use an external SSD for extra storage and I don't need anything beyond 32GB of RAM. Having 10 GBe is a plus since I am eventually upgrading my whole network to 10 GBe.

The M1 Mac mini will eventually replace the 2014 one I have, which acts like a file server. I will need to buy the ATTO iSCSI Initiator since the one I am using is Intel only and I use ISCSI so I can backup to the cloud. Since I can use DisplayPort on the M1 Pro MacBook Pro, I don't have this issue.

I ordered the Max 10-core, 32-core GPU. Will the extra GPU help power the two Studio Displays I ordered or do you think those would run fine with 24-core GPU?

Ordered a Mac Studio M1 Ultra 20/48 c, 64GB, 1TB.
I actually wanted to order the M1 Max version but since I have a 14” with M1 Pro, which has the same cpu performance of the M1 Max, I preferred to go with the Ultra.

I originally ordered the base Studio Ultra just a few hours after it was announced, and had a window of April 13-18th. After trading in my base M1 Mac mini and a few other things to Best Buy, I placed with them and now have a ship date of April 8th. I'm in no real hurry, but Best Buy was/is giving way better trade in prices on the devices and Macs I no longer need (vs. Apple).

In early 2014, I got the base model trash can Mac Pro. In early 2018, I got the base model iMac Pro, and now in early 2022, I'm getting the base Studio Ultra. The performance of the base model 'higher performance' Macs has served me well, and the depreciation hit is never really that huge after ~3-4 years.

I ordered the base Mac Studio M1 Max. I am trading in a base Mac Mini M1 which I had gotten used at a very good price so I’m not losing much with the trade-in value. Still says “processing order.” Since it is not a BTO order, I don’t expect it to see shipping movement until mid-week.

Ordered the Base model of the Studio Max and the Studio display. Estimated Delivery April 4-11. I can't wait.
I really have no use case for the Ultra, far more power than I need. Actually it's the display which interests me the most. Super camera, great sound, lots of goodies.

Any opinions on Magic Keyboard with Touch ID versus without Touch ID?

I'll buy white keys either way because of better lettering contrast so the difference is only about $45. So how well does the Touch ID work and do you find it useful?

If you have an Apple watch, no need for the Touch ID keyboard IMO. Unless you have your watch charging that is.

If you don't have a watch, then get the Touch ID keyboard, as it makes logging in faster/Apple pay on websites, etc.

Base model with the 1TB SSD. Upgrading from a 2018 "high end" Mac Mini. Love all the ports, ethernet, and the M1 Max chip. This should hold me for at least five years. I'll cheap out on my next laptop to replace a 2013 MBP that I use mainly to record to Logic Pro. No rush.

It's incredible that the orders have slipped into June! I was looking at the higher end Max with 64GB and 2TB and it's now 1-15 June. Hopefully these are under-promising so they can over-deliver, but that's moving back by a month per day. At least the MBPs seem to be getting more sensible now.

I didn't expect the dates to slip so fast either, it was tough with the MBP, but didn't expect it here, at least thought it would be ok to wait a week, and think through all the options.

Wound up placing the order just now, didn't want to risk it slipping further.

We went for the Studio Max w/ 32 core GPU, 64Gb memory, 2 TB SSD.

Delivery quote early June, so that's on par with the MBP wait.

We tend to hold on to computers for quite a while, this will replace a mid 2013 iMac, which has served us well but is showing its age for sure.

The Mac Studio is definitely sold less than the MacBook Pro, but Apple certainly had many more MacBook Pros pre-produced.

Looking at the MBP order thread, a lot of people received them weeks earlier than the initial predicted date. I think I'm going to hold out for a few weeks, but I expect that'll push me well into the summer. I just want to wait on some work stuff before I commit to the purchase. My machines are usually 8 years, so a laptop and desktop alternating every 4, but I've waited due to moving house and the transition.

Studio Max 10/24 1TB preparing to ship, est delivery March 18 - 24.
Studio display w/ standard glass, VESA mount processing, est delivery April 7 - 14.

My Studio Max 10/32 64GB 2TB originally estimated to arrive Mar 30 - Apr 6 just went to "Preparing to ship."

My Studio Display estimated April 13-20 is still processing. I hope it gets moved up so I don't have to use a peasant monitor temporarily. ;-)

Never thought of this! I'm planning on sticking with my Logi MX peripherals but was slightly wistful about not having touch ID and gestures. But I do have a watch.

Same configuration but with 32Gb memory and ordered March 10th. I’m hopping I can get mine before estimated date as well :)

And some peoples dates got delayed too. On the plus side, supply shortages in the industry seem to be improving. It may still take awhile to reach full capacity though, but I would be hopeful that Apple’s shipping estimates now are going to be on the safer side (better to err on a slightly later date and possibly get shipments out earlier than have to delay a shipment).

I guess what we need to be watching out for is those of us (like myself) who have early shipping dates with ranges. Mine says March 18-22. If we get ours earlier than later that indicates good things for everyone here.

I think the rapid extension in delivery dates is pretty interesting, and implies that the demand for this product is higher than Apple might have estimated. Yes, I'm sure they had fewer ready to go to meet initial demand, as the MacBooks are much bigger sellers for them, but the speed at which they moved out to 3 month delays is pretty amazing. I'm glad I got my order in as soon as the store opened.

My Studio Max with 2TB storage upgrade still hasn't moved to preparing to ship and it still says March 30 - April 6 arrival date. However, they did charge my card yesterday. So I'm guessing they charge the cards when they begin building the computer.

I think it’s more a sign of issues in supply chain. Apple uses JIT manufacturing so they rarely ever keep stock of their items past a few days. Most of their products get shipped directly to consumers from the factory or directly to the store.

My upgraded Max is also still in processing and I have a delivery date of March 21 - March 22.
