In the UK, the big influence on the shipping time seems to be the memory. 32gb will arrive in April, but regardless of the configuration, if you move it to 64gb, the delivery estimate jumps to "10 - 12 weeks" :(
I'm sure 32gb would be more than I need, but.... FOMO and wishing to future proof the machine so it'll run for as long as the old iMac it is replacing :(
Destination country shouldn't make a difference to the time between ordering and shipping.

As far as your spec, I'd always encourage to spec for a few years time. I know I've hit 30+GB RAM usage with VMs and docker several times, so 64GB makes sense for me. If 48 had been an option, that could have been a good option, but Apple seem to not mix 16 and 32 GB capacities. I know asymmetrical RAM can cause performance issues elsewhere, so I'm sure there's a justification for that.

Wait. I'm confused. So when it says processing, your machine is ready, and it just needs to be packaged and shipped, or does that mean that the order has been taken and they are working on it?

Processing is just that, processing, you're in the queue and they have your order pending to process, can last till few days from your OG delivery window starts. Usually the process with Apple begins when you see the retention of the money on your CC account, after that, you're more likely to see "Preparing to Ship" and then "Shipped", accompanied by an email from Apple that your machine left the warehouse.

To serve as a comparison, I placed a MBP 14" order on 29th January, it's been "Processing" since that date and delivery window starts on 23rd March, still hasn't been charged.

Keep it strong! It will arrive ;)

I think the unified memory is some how magic though. I was running Parallels at the end of last year on my 2020 M1 MBP - it only has 16gb of memory - but I had multiple Win11 and Win10 sessions open all processing through large files simultaneously and the machine didn't seem like it was getting maxed out. It's pure witchcraft !!
But yeah, future-proofing makes me think the 64gb is money well spent and I just gotta be patient for the next couple of months

My 1TB Max is estimated on the 21st to 22nd March but my Studio Display with VESA mount is a couple of weeks behind that!

There's hope they'll rush it out before the lockdown. I had a couple of Lenovo laptops shipped today...
Isn't the lockdown already in effect? I think the only hope of getting an Apple computer out of China before the 20th is if it ships from somewhere other than Shenzhen, or has already shipped.

Supposedly our shipment left Shenzhen on 12th, and if I am calculating right, it must be Monday only a few hours ago, which is 14th. so during 13th, they may have already left Shenzhen. I hope I am right on this one... crossed fingers.

Edit: I read from someone in this thread that lockdown is effective starting Monday.

Yes all new apple products are shipped directly from the factory. Usually China.
Yuck.

Shenzhen (huge shipping port) is locking down right now due to COVID so delays are expected for lots of Chinese exports.

Also yuck because the Chinese state is an evil regime and it's sad that our beloved apple supports such autocratic and dictatorial terrorists.

It's most definitely Monday in Shenzhen right now. Also, since I don't have a tracking code or even a "preparing for shipping" status, my only hope for timely delivery is that my Studio is made in anywhere except Shenzhen.

I did read someone on Twitter claim that "most" Apple products are made in Zhengzhou, but who knows.

Could you please provide the link to the tweet? I would appreciate it. For mine, it left facility in Shenzhen at 10:50 PM on March 12th.

Also lockdown was effective in that region only 4hours and 52 minutes ago, so we should be good.

Congrats on the niece, but no sorry friend I think calling out China and Apple's relationship with them is pretty fair.

So now you have a Mac Studio which is slower than your MacBook Pro. Strange. 🙃

B..but your AOC has only ~139.87 ppi and the Studio Display has 218 ppi. I can't wrap my head around how people are able to regularly switch between good and bad ppi counts. 😅 When my employer gave me a 27" 4K display (~163.18 ppi) I first was sure it was broken, before I realised it had much lower than retina resolution. I gave it back after a month of trying. Since then I'm working again with my 15" MBP only.
My Mac Studio won’t be slower in terms of CPU. Only in GPU. Which is fine. I am using the Mac Studio for copywriting, some virtualization and compiling my React Native apps.

I will still have my MacBook Pro M1 Max too. So I didn’t ‘switch’. I have both. As for the AOC: I have been using an iMac Retina 5K for years. For me the problem isn’t the fact that the ppi is lower. It’s the fact that iMac had a glossy display and my AOC has not. If a company would make a 32” glossy monitor, I would buy it immediately.

Also, please note that my AOC is a 32” and Studio Display is 27” inch. I regularly have some windows next to each other. So I really wouldn’t enjoy going back to 27”. Would be more of a problem for me than having a lower ppi.

I can’t say I have first hand experience with the M1s for dev work, but VMs usually require wired memory, which doesn’t undergo compression or paging. However the M1 does seem to be more aggressive with paging other stuff so it may well help if you’re within certain limits. Large files don’t always get fully parsed into memory, but it all depends on use cases. However, magic does seem to cover that too 😜, keeping a sense of wonder keeps you young.
