That was meant as a 'PUN' on the whining noise
Remember that in reading words on a screen, it's a lot harder to determine intent. It came across as making fun of people, and that's just not right, even if it wasn't your intent.

With that said...I'm 'disabled' with a lifelong autoimmune condition that turned my life upside down when I got COVID in Early March 2020. Since then, because my body is essentially trying to kill me, I've been on debilitating 'chemo' meds and prednisone to shut down my immune for a year and a half and as a result, my hearing has been compromised and I have constant multi-tonal tinnitus throughout my day.
Sorry to hear that and I hope you're better now! But you probably didn't get made fun of much as a kid -- that's where I come from...

Long story short, if I throw out a PUN on an issue, while LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION... It's to lighten the atmosphere. Now... Where did I put the cheese?
You do not want me to write what I'm thinking right now, but to put it mildly, you are definitely not lightening the atmosphere right now.

If I may suggest, don't assume and overly read between the lines. It's not worth it. I personally wish you the best in finding your Zen. Mahalo

I received my max studio a few weeks back but only just got around to setting it up now. No fan noise or whine at all. Perfectly silent.
You need to wait a few weeks for it to start.
Mine is tolerable, but definitely not perfectly silent. I can hear a barely audible whir from the fans.
It's not about fan noise, rather fan whine or whistle.

I literally hear NOTHING from mine (Ultra maxed out) using 3 ASD and 1 XDR. Best setup I could ask for.
I wish mine was totally silent. Clearly it's a difference in manufacturers for the fans. Wonder if Apple would replace the fans if enough of us complain?

This means that your room is louder than the Studio as the fans are always running and definitely make a noise. I would be curious to know your room's db level.

Mine is also dead silent...... I can hear the fans if I my head is next to it but even then it's barely audible. I've used fan control and ramped the speed up to hear the whoosh sound. Before you say I have bad hearing or my room noise is loud, neither are true. I've also saw many reviews where their Max is ultra silent. It just sucks that not all units are equal.

Mind running a db meter app and reporting back the room's level?

"whisper quiet" is apple‘s claim, not ‘silent’ to be fair…

I looked for dB figures (measured at what distance?) but none stated

I can hear the noise, I was hoping to have silent machine at idle. If I edit fan speed I can clearly hear the whine at some speed and during acceleration and deceleration. Probably I will ask Apple Support but I fear to receive a machine with the same PSU/fans

If everyone stays vocal enough, and if there truly are some that are completely silent, then give it a few months and Apple will likely have a fan replacement available. At least I hope.

Putting my phone in the front of the Mac Studio, I got 29 dB. At the top in the fan wind (which is probably causing wind to go around the microphone and create more noise) it was 36 dB. Immediately above where the fans are (top of the Mac Studio, but toward the back), it was 32 dB.

Mine is mounted to the back of the footwell area of my desk. When I sat my phone on my desk, it was registering 28 dB. It's far from silent, but it's not a distraction for me except when nothing is going on in the room. I usually get used to it pretty easily unless I'm focusing on it (this thread makes me focus on it).

Despite all this, it's not dead silent even at 29 dB. I have a slight hearing deficit from working on helicopters many years ago, and even with my slight deficit I can hear it.

As I said in a previous post, it's about the volume of somebody whispering. By comparison, when I print from my Brother MFC-L8900CDW laser printer, the printer registers at 52 dB. When my HVAC unit is running, it's registering 40-45 dB.

I'm using the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app with the iPhone 11 Pro's built-in microphone. I know it's not calibrated nor the most technical, but just to give you some comparison.

It cannot be “dead silent” if the fan is constantly spinning. People who say that, simply can’t hear fans over the background noise. Apple specs claim 25dB at idle from “operators position”, so definitely not silent.

Depending on noise level in one’s room, the Studio will be either “quiet” or “not so quiet”, never silent - unless one is using the word “silent” as a figure of speech for something they can’t hear.

The “whine” is a manufacturing defect, in my humble opinion. But the fact that some people can hear fan and some can’t is due to level of background noise and also due to individual sensitivity/hearing.

Whoever expected the Studio to be inaudible, didn’t do their homework before the purchase, I’m afraid.

Sound Power Level of 2.5 Bel (25dB) is NOT silent.

Please stop with the ‘completely silent’. It’s just impossible if there are two fans spinning at 1300rpm.

If you have a machine with no whine (or no problematic whine), then there is a very low volume, inoffensive fan noise. I use it in my extremely quiet music studio and can record in the same room with no issue.

Saying your machine is completely silent is confusing and misleading to new customers who expect it to be like a fanless MacBook Air, or even a Mac Mini.

Agree 100%. The only completely silent M1 Mac is MacBook Air, because it has no fan and is passively cooled. M1 Mac mini is much quieter than the Studio at idle, which makes it inaudible to most people, but it is not silent.

Again, according to Apple’s specs:

M1 mini is 1.4 Bel (14dB) at idle.

So can we please stop with this “silent” nonsense?

My home office is not a noisy environment. Occasionally you might hear a car driving down the street or something, but otherwise, a pretty quiet space. My Mac Studio is completely silent. I have never heard it make any noise other than the Mac start up chime.

I put my ear right up to it and I'm not hearing anything at all. I'm not hard of hearing, I don't have any hearing issues, and I'm telling you, mine is silent.

Maybe it’s broken? 🤣🤣🤣

Seriously though, download NIOSH app to your phone. Switch off Studio, take measurement at the place you normally sit, then switch the Studio on and take the measurement again. And then please post the results.
