I want to get the PicasoLab case, but all these posts about lack of communication is steering me the other way.

It's a great product, but the guys had too much publicity lately and he obviously can't keep up with the workload with each case being hand made.

I mentioned earlier that I'd post some photos of the Joli Originals leather slip case for the rMBP. Here it is - I think its beautiful!

Overpriced and looks loose to me.

Welcome to your opinion. Price is subjective and I can confirm its as snug as a bug in a rug. That's a technical term...

If you can't tell I think its easily worth the money. You sometimes have to pay for quality and I think the fact the sleeve is handmade in holland by the two person team that is Joli is something I'm happy to support. Not for everyone, each to there own.

Much respect to all you sleeve people, but I wonder if anyone has good recommendations for my rMBP for the following:

  • Shoulder bag
  • Has a decent main pocket for "other things" like a paper notebook and power adapter
  • Good small pocket for dongles and pens
  • A handle would be nice, but not mandatory
  • A separate slot within the main pocket - or as its own pocket - for the laptop, so other things in the main pocket don't rub against it. This is key, I don't want to buy a sleeve too
  • Styling that isn't super-hacker-shiny-urban-cool, or blah-Dell-bag, but more of a leather or rustic fabric look.

I think this STM shoulder bag fits most of your criteria. Think they are pretty good bags too. [Now linking the 15" version!]

My main issue is the material used, corrected grain coated leather is not what I would call quality, I would expect proper leather for that price.

Fair enough, I don't know enough about leather to know the difference. According to their site it is "finished in Italy by people with a great passion for leather and with the best knowledge in the world" and I'm a sucker for marketing speak, so thats good enough for me... ;) It does certainly feels premium to touch and look at which is the most important thing for me.

Not for you I guess. As I said, each to their own.

Option for handle too.

I don't think you will be able to find another bag to satisfy all these criteria.

That styling isn't exactly classic, though.

For classic leather styling, there are Saddleback bags. Classic, stylish, durable, and heavy (4-5 lbs). You'll need a separate padded sleeve-type case, though, as these don't have padding. Also, they're probably one of those cases where, if you have to ask the price, you can't afford them (I can't, although I wish I could ).

Anyway, I suggest the OP browse the selection at ebags.com, but pay close attention to the reviews. While ebags obviously doesn't have everything, they have a decent selection, with a wide price range.

I recently found this and will order one asap:

Looks good, has a separate laptop AND iPad compartment. Main compartment and iPad/laptop are accessible from the top without lifting the flap. The exterior and interior is waterproof. It has a handle. I've been looking for something versatile for WEEKS and this is the best I've found so far can't really find anything missing.

Wasn't aware that the person was looking for a classic leather bag.
And yes, durable classic leather is heavy.

Rickmansworth, Herts.
I emailed him a couple of days ago as well - I'll post if I hear back.

I emailed yesterday as when I ordered (July 12) it stated on the web page that it would be shipped by the 20th. Like most people here, not had a response either as a reaction to my enquiry or a proactive "sorry but your order is delayed...." email.

For someone who is running a business, communication is key, just ask RIM or Sony!

I thought I'd share my case choices for my new rMBP (it just came in yesterday, it's lovely). I'll be heading to college this fall and I didn't want my laptop to get scratched and worn. I'm a rather picky consumer who doesn't like animal products (leather, wool) and I wanted the case to be a fun color. Until the hardback Speck/Incipio/Incase options come out, I opted for the gray and blue Incipio Honu sleeve which I'm hoping will fit nicely within my pink North Face Surge backpack, which has a convenient separate padded laptop sleeve. <3

So I heard back from Alex N. last night over at PicasoLab. Here was his message

Hi Stefan,
Thank you for your order.
I set up different accounts for the ease of set up ads with Etsy. Yes, all orders from Etsy come back to me. I make my cases by the order they come in, all of my stores orders come in one place, Paypal. I don't have a preference of how/where the orders come in.

With the recent rise in interest of my cases. I am having a difficult time keeping up with demand. I buy my leather based on sales from previous month. With the popularity of MBPr, I ran out of my July supply by July 4th :( I try to restock as fast as I can. I ask for an additional 5 days from your original ETA.

I 'unplugged' over the weekend to catch up with orders, I'm sorry for the late respond.

I'd say that's pretty fair. Even Wozniak bought one of his cases last week.

I don't mind waiting, as long as I know he's still there!

Same here! Just hoping there is no drop in quality due to his increased business.

Sorry, where is the huge power adapter?

I don't find it reasonable at all.

He knows people are emailing. He knows he is late. He says he's buying based upon outdated sales numbers. He can get leather more quickly than 2 weeks. He is rushing. He could ship as he goes since USPS picks up, he does not.

I get this is a hand made product, but he is not managing the process well. The single best thing he can do is be responsive and he shuts off email for 2 days?

Mine has finally shipped and I sure hope I am not disappointed after all the delays.

And I'll bet Steve already got his case. He mentioned how he pandered to his celebrity buyer.

Wouldn't you? I sure as hell would, I mean it is a business and he stands a lot more to gain by making Steve a case at his beckon call over say, you or me.

That being said, he mentioned he ran out of leather supply on July 4th? Well, when I ordered mine (July 18th 6 hours before Mr. Steve) it still said expected ship by July 25th. At this point, he is continually making promises, and he either has no intention on fulfilling them, or just has an extreme case of dementia in thinking he can still get the cases out even though he has been late on every batch of orders thus far.

I'll take back the word "promises" because he said "I should be able to ship it by July 25th", but still he has said that for July 18th, and July 25th, and July 31st, and has now taken down the date altogether finally. So, he has realized that he's overwhelmed, but according to that message that he sent, he has been overwhelmed for quite some time.

I just hope the case is at least worth the wait, hassle, and not to mention the $100 price tag... Still thinking it will..

If it was me, I'd make sure the Woz got his before you also.

I'm patiently waiting for a hard case like the Perforated or the Satin cases. I used to use an amazing Case-Mate Signature Suit but they stopped making them, sadly. It's STILL in use on the early 2008 MacBook Pro I sold to buy my Retina, keeping it immaculate.

Listen, it's taking HUGE companies like InCase and Moshi and Speck MONTHS to make new cases specifically for the Retina. So cut the PicasoLab guy some slack.
