No I haven't ordered...which is a good thing. I'm in Boston next week on business so I contacted him a few days ago to find out the lead times and shipping time, but haven't heard back, so my plan to save tax and a bit on shipping has now fallen through. If I ever do hear back, I may order and ship it to my home address but I'm not submitting an order into what seams like a black hole.

Please keep us posted on your situation.

I sure will, i don't even mind a little longer shipping time to be honest but i just want to know that he has received my emails and knows exactly what i want before he has sent it out. Ah this is frustrating

He screwed up my original order (when rMBP was just being released). Waited weeks for a brown like the one pictured.

He was slow to respond to emails and will not respond over weekends.

The arrived and it was reddish. He admitted he ran out of the brown and thought the red was close.

I disagreed and was pretty PO'd.

He let mme keep the case and refunded my money.

By heavy I mean for an rMBP its a lot of reasonably think leather. So it has some weight.

Now,

While I am not happy with Joli Originals right now, I think their cases look and feel nicer.

Just be sure to specify that you want new leather that smells like leather.

Any updates for us?

Yes!!!! it arrived on the 5th of march but Ive been very busy with university so i could not get around to following up on my earlier post, sorry  anyway i have a few minutes to spare so i shall do it now. This is going to be long !

I purchased the Brown and red 13" Retina Macbook pro sleeve from the Picaso lab website on the 18th of Feb 2013 for $84.00USD plus $7.95USD for shipping for a total of $91.95USD. The shopping process was seamless and easy with no problems. I paid with a credit card through PayPal, and was sent a confirmation email a few minutes later. Great!!

Now a little note for people who like good fast service and communication, it is severely lacking. Right after i purchased the case i sent an email to Alex (the guy who makes the cases) asking a few questions about the engraving... no reply, five unanswered emails and 2 calls to California later (which went directly to his voice mail), left me almost on the brink of doing a charge back on my credit card for fear of being scammed, until i finally received a shipping notice from USPS on the 20th Feb. This renewed my hope and i decided to try calling him one more time. He finally answered and i was assured that my order was on its way and would ship out by Monday the 25th Feb, he also apologized for the email silence as he was unwell. All was forgiven :D

A few days later i was emailed the tracking info and the wait began, now another important point is that Alex ships the cases internationally by USPS First class international letter service, now it may seem like a premium "First class" service but its exactly the opposite its USPS's cheapest option with a 7-10 day wait (people online have reported up to a 4 week wait), no insurance and no tracking outside of of the US. It seems i got lucky and the case arrived on the 5th of March here in Auckland New Zealand so around 9 days from my promised ship date and 16 days from the date i purchased it online.

The Sleeve

Let me start by saying that the case is everything i expected and more :D its looks exactly like the one on his website and the leather on mine has excellent figuring and color. The thickness of one sheet of leather is around 4mm thick for a total thickness of 8mm for the case, the dark brown and red really contrasts nicely with the silver of the rmbp. When i first received it the fit was a little tight but i expected this. I knew that as the leather stretched its would settle in. And this is exactly what has happened, in a few days the leather molded its self around the mac book and now the fit is absolutely perfect with no excess loose leather. Its now easy to slip the rmbp in and out of the case but the fit is firm enough that i can almost hold the case upside down without the rmbp falling out.

The only things that are a bit off are the edges, while 90% of them are nicely glued and sealed the bottom right corner and the top edge are slightly under-glued and the layers are coming unstuck, i quickly resolved this with a drop of pva glue. It all looks great now so I'm not too worried. I know that this is a handmade product so i cant expect it to be absolutely perfect in every way. Another little annoyance to note is that the leather scratches easily so an accidental nail scratch leaves a light mark, though this fades out after a few minutes.

I asked to have mine engraved with my name and after seeing some examples on his website of text Photoshopped onto the case i was quite skeptical as to how good it would look. In fact i even had second thoughts on whether i should have even asked for engraving as i feared that the engraved text would look more like a blemish on the already textured leather. Well it turned out that my fears were unfounded, the engraving is incredible in every way, each character is etched with an extremely high resolution, hence the text comes out looking sharp and legible. There are no defects or blurriness and the final result does not look like a scratch or blemish, i definitely recommend getting it engraved. Don't take his examples on his website as an indication of what it will look like as the final results are a million times better.

Overall i am very happy with the product, it has an excellent design and the materials used are top notch. The case has a very luxurious feel with the thick leather and is very professional looking ! Don't be put-off by by the customer service as the final product is well worth the money and time. I now get compliments on the case everywhere i go with people asking me where Ive purchased it from, it looks especially good with the 13" rmbp in it :D i would recommend it to any one who wants something a little more then the average.

I have uploaded a few pictures bellow.

Thanks for reading !

Absolutely none so far, the leather is dyed very well and seems to be of quite a high quality, hopefully it will hold up well into the future.

Very nice... Glad you managed to get it eventually!

Although the quality of the engraving looks really good, the one thing that puts me off is the font. Personally I'd prefer something a little more formal, rather than a script font. Does he provide any options there? But it still looks like a great case, shame about the poor service. He probably doesn't realise how many sales he'll miss out on just because of that.

I think he does the engraving in two fonts ones the one i got and the other is myriad pro (apple font) i think. check out his website, he has a section on engraving.

Awesome! Thanks for the great review. I ended up ordering one while waiting for your review so I'm glad it's all worked out well... I should get mine next week so I'll try to add to this with my own impressions when I get a chance.

Sleeve or Case

New to MAC, but plunged totally into the MAC family. Gave my PC laptop away. Is it a necessity to use a sleeve and a case to have protection for a rMBP?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Welcome! You'll see proponents for both. I opted for a sleeve only because I am super careful so I don't need to have my notebook protected 24/7. I also use an external keyboard and external trackpad as much as possible to prevent wear on the trackpad and palm rests. Otherwise it's naked, with the sleeve only used for transport purpose.

However the aluminum finish is susceptible to scratching and wear, so some people use cases to protect them 24/7. Cases also provide a limited form of drop protection. Ultimately it depends on how much abuse you think your MacBook will get.

Check out theluckylabs.com as well as icarbons, bodyguardz, zagg, etc.. Almost any company that sells clear skins sells carbon fiber now a days.

I'm looking for a sleeve meant for the 15" retina - i.e., form fitting. I also would like a pocket for the power adapter. So far this is the only thing I've found that might fit the bill:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/H...acCompatibility=15inchmacbookproretinadisplay

It seems exclusive to apple; I can't find it on incase's wesbite. Has anyone tried this?

Unfortunately I haven't . A Colcasac fits the bill, though. I have a Uintah and I'm really pleased with it:
