Hello guys, I'm new to this community!

I've read the last ~20 pages since i'm buying my first rMBP 13'' soon and i've already been looking to find a bag/sleeve so as to protect it as much as i can.

I'm a uni student and i would like to have a shoulder bag/backpack to carry the laptop AND some papers with me, which should ideally be durable.

I've also thinking of buying a sleeve for it and carrying it with a sleeve inside the backpack/messenger bag. Would that work nicely? (The booq viper seems like a real nice sleeve but i also look fondly of some leather ones..)

I see most of you don't talk about laptop carrying bags, where do you keep your laptops when moving around and when your hands are full?

All that said, i need to find something on ebay/amazon.co.uk as i'm located on EU and most of the sites that i see you post are US based :(

Thank you very much for the links! They're a nice start!

However I can't say i have that much a big budget, i worked as much as i could just to get the money for the macbook and i can't throw another 200 euroes for a backpack (yet! )

I was thinking more of a quality sleeve and a cheaper bag/backpack.
I love the looks of the sleeve you posted but.. it's 85 inc tax :D

:( Regretting getting this speck case now. It's loose-fitting at the bottom, dust is getting in, and you're suppose to take it off monthly to clean the dust so it doesn't scratch the Mac (hopefully). I was just keen to protect the Mac when I bought it... :(

So I went to a Mac store yesterday with hard Moshi cases, which are far better quality than Speck. They offered to swap the cases for me when I voiced my concerns. However, since the plastic is harder, is it more likely to damage the Mac?

I'm beginning to think a hard case is more trouble than it's worth. To those without hard cases, is it easy to keep your Mac relatively scratch-free by using a good padded bag or sleeve? I'd be interested to know the proportion of people that use a hard case to those who don't. Going away for a month on Sunday, so I'd love to know what to do ASAP... *sigh*.

I view hard cases for protecting your machine against dents and such, not scratches. If your are looking to protect against scratches than get a Slickwraps wrap. It's far more attractive, especially in the brushed steel skin and it doesn't look like your computer is wearing a retainer with head gear.

Best corner protection?

Can anyone please share an opinion specifically on the case/sleeve with the best drop protection over the corners? I don't trust the zippers for corner protection so am interested in info how other solutions, like protruding booq viper sleeve or germanmande sleeve compare.

For me the Macbook case is all about the drop protection. Past experience with 3 Macbooks has taught me that THE weakest / most exposed spots are the laptop corners - either of my Macs has had, at some point, an accidental drop and it always landed on one corner or another. IMHO same applies for the iphone but that's another story.

The last accident happened a couple of weeks ago, when my prized possession, new Retina 15, was damaged. It was inside a backpack, in the designated laptop sleeve. Backpack was rested on a cca 0.7m high table, was pushed over, it flipped upside down in the air landed on the top, straight on the upward end of the mac, protected only by the zipper of the backpack. On the marble floor. Of course there was damage, a ugly looking dent next to the charger plug, but luckily all functionality was preserved.

I finally gave in and decided to buy a travel/carry-on case and, after a ton of research, ordered a gumdrop drop tech sleeve. Its rubberized corner protection seemed interesting enough to give it a try, although I am not 100% convinced on practicality/fitment. There was not a lot of info on the forum on this case so I will post a quick review once it is in my hands.

In the meantime, grateful in advance for any constructive ideas on how to best preserve precious mac in case of a corner-drop :)

So my Waterfield CaseSleeve and my Booq Viper for a 15" rMBP both came. I like them both, though they are definitely different.

See as the Booq has basically no padding at all, the WF is much more protective from a padding standpoint. The WF seems very well made and seems like a decent combination between padded protection (though I wouldn't want to find out what happens if dropping it from more than a few inches onto a hard surface) and not being too terribly bulky.

The Booq seems to be intended solely for protection from scratches, etc. There is no padding to speak of. The flap on the WF is nice, though the Booq is extremely easy to access the laptop with the small opening along the top and the magnetic closure. Because of the lack of padding, the Booq is definitely thinner both empty and with the rMBP in it.

One thing I did notice is that the rMBP is easier to get in and out of the Booq if I leave my wireless mouse usb receiver in the laptop. It tends to get caught up on some of the fabric/padding in the WF when trying to remove the laptop. Not a deal breaker either way since it is easy enough to remove the receiver if need be.

My final decision will rest on the new briefcase I have arriving early next week and how each one fits in there.

Suffice it to say though, they they both seem to be quality products.

Anyone using this case . According to ome of the reviewers there is about an inch of free space once you put the rmbp 13" in it.

Also any recommendations for something that will protect the laptop when out of that case in daily usage? I was thinking of this one but have no clue how it looks like.

Crumpler Pinnacle of Horror vs Flock of Horror

Hello,

I am interested in buying one of the Crumpler Horror series bag, and I was hoping for your input.

First, is there a difference between those you can buy at the Apple Store and those you can buy on the Crumpler website? The Apple Store mentions that the Flock of Horror bag can fit a 13-inch macbook pro, but the Crumpler website suggests that it does not.

Second, how different in size are these 2 bags? I would like to fit in my 13-inch macbook pro retina, ipad, a few documents or binders or books (nothing super large/wide however). I know the Pinnacle of Horror is bigger, but was wondering if the pocket for the macbook would be too big for the 13-inch (since it is supposed to be made for the 15-inch?). Basically, I want something that is not huge, but can fit a few things in it without running out of space after adding one notebook.

Any thoughts?

Thank you! :)

Just in case anyone is thinking of getting a Speck Smartshell for their 15" retina MBP.... let me save you some hassle.

Here is what the top piece of plastic did to my machine...look closely at the edges.

Image

Yep, now look closer.
Image

That's right... this damn thing is BENDING the corners of my screen BACKWARDS!
Image

And you want to know the real bonus kicker? Now I can't get it off! I have tried sliding credit cards in there, going at it from different angles, prying the latches...NOTHING. I am seriously concerned that additional pressure is going to damage my machine. So now I get the additional hassle of a service appointment at the Apple store to get this thing off, get my money back, AND get them to deal with any damage that may occur to my machine in their process of removing it.

Seriously... burn in hell, Speck. See if I ever touch your ****** products again.

That is very strange; I have used many Speck cases on my former 13" MBP & 3 different 15" rMBP, as well as curent MBA (wife's), 13" rMBP (daughter's) and my 13" Haswell rMBP. No issues whatsoever, so you got a lemon there.

Longshot here guys.

Getting my 13", 2.6/16/512 on wednesday and I need a very specific sleeve for it.

It has to be velcro backed, and open on the 'top.' How to explain... like the smaller dimension side is where I want the flap. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/CaseCrown-Neo...sr=8-25&keywords=13+retina+macbook+pro+sleeve

But the thing needs to be velcro backed (the prickly kind) so I can attach it inside my backpack.

Any dieas?

Ha wow I should have known there would be a case thread. Personally I've decided to go without a case on my new 15 inch retina. Has been without a ding since October, but there have been some scratches on the bottom. The machine looks too good to cover up!

Although the GelaSkins Moosebear linked to may change my mind. The one he picked and others are very cool.

What bags are you considering?

What bags are you considering?

I picked up a used Lotuff & Clegg English Briefcase in dark brown (Chocolate as they call it on the Lotuff site - Clegg and Lotuff split up a couple of years ago) off of the Styleforum.net classified section.

Anyway, here is the bag if you were to buy it new:

http://lotuffleather.com/collections/briefcases/products/english-leather-briefcase

Mine looks the same as the Chocolate color aside from the fact that on the inside, the branding says "Lotuff & Clegg" as opposed to just Lotuff.

In any event, I haven't made my final decision yet, as the bag just arrived today, but here are my initial thoughts:

WF Pros:
- More padding than the Booq, and given that the briefcase is not particularly padded, this may be one of the deciding factors.
- I like the flap and the extra padding if I am just carrying the laptop itself without the briefcase or another bag.
- Seems very well made and sturdy

WF Cons:
- Thicker front to back so takes up a bit more room in the briefcase

Booq Pros:
- Lighter and thinner (though this could also fall under cons since the lightness and thinness is due to essentially no padding whatsoever).
- Slides into and out of the bag slightly easier - though not that big of a deal as the WF is also easy to get in and out.
- Easier access if I just want to remove the laptop to use and leave the sleeve in the bag, since you basically just put your hand in the opening on the top, which splits the magnets and remove (versus the WF where you would need to fully open the flap to remove the actual laptop).

Booq Cons:
- No padding at all, so while a bit lighter and thinner than the WF, provides no additional padding/protection if the bag gets bumped/banged
- Seems a bit flimsier than the WF (though still seems like a quality product that won't fall apart or anything like that).
- Right now, the magnets seem to hold very well if you turn the sleeve upside down and even when you shake it - though if they were to fail while the sleeve happened to be upside down it could be catastrophic on the laptop. Whereas, the WF would have to have the velcro fail and then the flap open pretty much all the way (which presumably could happen). I'm not sure either is that likely but it seems like the magnets on the Booq might be a weaker link than the velcroed flap on the WF.

As of now, I think I'm leaning toward keeping the WF, as it seems like it would provide more protection from bangs and bumps than the Booq. But again, I haven't quite made a final decision at this point.

I'm thinking about getting the Booq Mamba Courier 15" for my 13" rmbp+Booq Viper Sleeve. The Viper sleeve is 35,5 cm wide and 26,5 cm high. Do you think it will fit in the 15" bag?

Thanks in advance

Booq mamba courier

Any one that has a booq mamba courier 15" that Can measure the laptop compartment. I nede to fit a booq viper sleeve 13" in there (Exterior measurements 351 × 252 × 25 mm
13.8 × 9.9 × 1 in).

I have checked the booq website but i'm not sure the measurements is the interior of the laptop compartment or the intire bag (looks different in Photos).
Thanks in advance

rMBP Sleeve

I am going today to purchase a 15in rMBP. My first mac since I bought a 12in powerbook in 2005 as a college freshman. :D

Anyway, I am looking for a sleeve that offers a high level of protection and includes a pocket to hold power adapter/mouse/random cords/usb drives. Any suggestions? Also, a handle of somekind would be nice but not a deal breaker.

Thanks. This is my first post on here, although I have been lurking for a while.
