id like to point out that the Xserve 2,1 uses Harptown CPUs same as the Mac Pro 3,1 and both do SSE4.1 (and even has a 64bit efi). (the Xserve1,1 uses the same chipset as the Mac Pro 1,1/2,1 the Xserve2,1 uses the same chipset as a Mac Pro 3,1 and the Xserve3,1 uses the same chipset in the Mac Pro 4,1/5,1)
Oh, I always thought the Xserve 2,1 was the same as the Mac Pro 2,1. If the 2,1 uses the same chipset/CPUs as the Mac Pro 3,1, it'll work just fine.

Is there any benefit of installing 10.12 on a Macbookpro5,3 (mid-2009), other than the new features? Would there be an improvement in performance (or the opposite)? Is there any benefit of the new file system for old HDDs? Because if not, I won't bother updating.

I do not see an improvement in performance on my mid-2009 MBP. I see the benefit at this time being the new features. My main reason is to keep my old machine as similar to my officially supported machine as I can so that as I move from one to the other the experience is similar.

Sierra DB4 is here.
I'm fine using the public beta since that is what the tool is/was supporting. I have access to the developer releases. Any easy way or reason to move back over to the developer betas from public beta 2? Guessing its just as well to follow the public path for now but thought I would ask since you're on the developer releases. My other Mac is updating right now but its supported so easier for me to deal with.

Someone please upload the dist for DP4, so I can add it to my software update patch. And just FYI, the seed URL doesn't have to be changed. There's no reason to switch to the DP from the PB, they're exactly the same.

Switch to the seed CatalogURL and make the changes in the .dist. So you can go from pb to dp.
Assume I don't know what I'm doing (I don't know what I'm doing) to make that happen. I feel like this has been covered in this thread though so I will look at past posts and see what I find unless you want to point me with a shortcut version.

Will your tool (fantastic) help me make the move? If not, I will just wait until the PB is released and follow the path.

Yeah, once updated, my tool will allow you to update to the next DP or PB, whatever you currently are running. Switching from the DP to PB and vise versa isn't supported, as there's no reason to do so.

Hmm well I don't have any interest in any of the features, except the new file system but that probably won't help at all but instead would cause problems. I also don't have any other devices of my own. So I won't upgrade.

I still gotta fix that app store glitch... it thinks I'm in the public beta program and wants me to update to a beta but I'm not in the program. :/

III guess I'll wait for the tool update, can't find the DP4 dist and trying to shove it in won't trigger the App Store update.

Currently on Public Beta 2, just noticed I've lost the beta releases checkbox and the feedback assistant app?

The new file system is not what the beta is built on. It does include some tools for testing the new filesystem but as of this time it looks like it will be next version, 10.13, before we have any significant builds on anything new.

For ac2334;

This is what I did.

1. Hooked up the SSD to a Firewire dock to the Mac Pro 5,1.
2. Booted up the Mac Pro 5,1 from the SSD.
3. Downloaded the tool in post # 679 by TMRJIJ.
4. Ran the post # 679 tool.
5. Then launched the MAS application and selected the Updates button.
6. A minute later DP 2 Sierra was displayed and proceeded the download.
7. The DP 2 Sierra installer automatically launched and installed the update.
8. After the installation was completed, the Mac Pro 5,1 booted normally from the SSD.
9. I shut down the Mac Pro 5,1 and disconnected the SSD from the Firewire dock.
10. Placed the SSD back in my MBP 5,1.
* Note below.
11. Inserted the USB flash drive with dosdude1's setup installation and tool.
12. Booted the MBP 5,1 from the USB flash drive.
13. Ran the Post Install tool from the USB flash drive.
14. The MBP 5,1 rebooted utilizing the SSD.

* Yeah, after placing the SSD back in the MBP 5,1, I did the boot up but noticed the keyboard/trackpad was unresponsive then continued with step 11 above.

Everything is normal again.
Yep, this also works for the DP 4 Sierra installation. I'm using my MBP 5,1 running DP 4 Sierra composing this post.

Thanks dosdude1!

So I have Public Beta 1 installed and working. I also had Public Beta 2 showing up in the Updates section of the App Store. at the weekend I decided to download it, it started got to about 17Mbs and stopped. Quit the App Store, relaunched and now no updates are showing.
Any ideas what may be going on?

Ta

No, just wait for the next Public Beta to be released. The DP and PB are exactly the same, so there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to go from PB to DP.
I second that guys and gals! Pick a line and stick with. To date the PB versus DP build numbers are similar. The PB usually follows the DP within a week. I am on PB and see no reason to switch constantly. In fact, looking at the release notes my only reason to upgrade to the soon to come PB3 will be support for Xcode beta 4. Lots of juicy bits there, but not in the latest OS ( in my opinion).

On MacBookPro4,1 still require the AppleSMCLMU.kext plugin replacement to make keyboard backlight/als working on DP4. All other things (sound, gpu, volume control still works)

If someone could upload the dist and location of it for the PB3 update, I can add it to my software update patch.

After updating to a new Sierra build, is it necessary (or desirable) to run the post-install patch again? or would this cause problems?
