Guys I have a problem with MacbookPro 2009. I have updated from 10.14.4 to 10.14.5 via System updates. After a restart computer didn't start - it kept restarting after verbose screen with splash screen saying that computer restarted due to error. Then I used my pendrive made with old version of tool and macOS (stupid me, I know) to apply patches, also forced to rebuild caches. After that MBP restarted but it was still not working. Then I used another MB to create the new pendrive (MacOs Mojave Patcher 1.3.3, Mojave downloaded using tool -v. 14.5.00) but when I boot using it my laptop stops at Apple logo, half way of progress bar.. Any help/ ideas what to do now?
Just to mention: I created new pendrive using latest versions 2 times and I use APFS.
Thanks

Hello everyone,

I've managed to get Mojave 'working' on a MacBook 4.1 ( early 2008 A1181). Logging in ( or booting with auto-login ) is very very slow but once things get started the system is sort of usable. Same long wait if you lock the screen and then enter your login details. Wifi works. I had a look through the system.log and have disabled services here and there. Adding a new user is very slow so perhaps there's an issue with App Store / Credential manager. Has anyone else here had experience of Mojave with early 2008 MacBooks? If so any tips on performance tweaks would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Cheers

S

PS Sierra runs pretty well on a MacBook 4.1

Fixed it with by doing a fresh installation and adding some El Capitan kexts. All working well now.

I meant Macbook Pro 2009 (not 2019), sorry!
Any help?
When I reinstalled Mojave 10.14.5 it flashed 3-4 mins left several times then finally 2 mins with just a bit over halfway on the progress then later 1 min and the progress bar didn't move then after awhile it rebooted then I applied the post install patches and it worked you might try and reinstall 10.14.5 with patcher 1.3.3 then let it do its thing just keep an eye on the time remaining

APFS in the pen drive? The one you make with the patcher??

Thanks for reply. The problem is that I am now unable to boot using pendrive as after choosing it while booting the laptop just hangs half-way on progress bar.

Can you use another make to make Mojave patcher 1.3.3 this time use the partition in Disk utility make sure its extended journaled that way using partition wipes any remnants of anything that may be left over then try makeing a Mojave patcher

yes the mohave patcher usb needs to be in HFS -extended journaled your internal hdd/ssd needs to be APFS if you want to receive updates also make sure your usb pen drive with Mojave says this:

Made an account to share my success story.
Macbook 4,1 (4gb ram and 500GB HDD upgrades)

This was a lot less painless than I anticipated.

TOOLS:
MacOS patcher from RMC team - downloaded the latest build from Github
Copy of Mojave Install .app (10.14.5)
Disk Utility (stock)

PROCESS:
#i didn't have a usb on hand that was 16gb, so I made a janky multi-partition install. I have Leopard installed on the mac, I made a second installer partition (20gb), and a third Mojave partition (250GB), so I could dual-boot in case i didn't like the outcome. Don't judge me.

I followed all the instructions from the RMC page, and everything just worked. That's it! No special things or edits, or fixes.

SOME ISSUES:
- When I used the tool to make the installer it did not read my volumes/partitions, so I just typed the target volume by hand and that worked.
- First time I tried to boot into the Installer partition it didn't load and just restarted, but the second time it worked.
- The install took around 35min (so the estimate on screen was never accurate).
- When I first booted into the Mojave partition after post-patching it took a long time to load; screen was loading white for about 60%, the switched to black loading theme for the remaining time. But, it worked.
- Due to it being on an HDD, and still not sure how much the post-patch does for graphics acceleration on this GPU (has it been resolved? or is it still crippled?), the system is rather slow on some tasks.
- Maps does not work
- Brightness keys do nothing (they show on screen the OSD, but it is not changing the brightness)
[update]
-camera doesn't work

SOME TWEAKS:
I found a couple of sites mentioning which terminal commands can disable some extra animation options, and some debugging features that are not necessary (i think i would just spook an apple employee if he saw a crash report saying macbook 4,1 mojave :p )
Safari was too slow, so I am now using UR browser (works very well).

Thanks to this forum, and RMC for all their hard work!

Hello, I'm the RMC team leader and also the sold scripter for macOS Patcher. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll try to answer some of your notes here.

- The volume listing issue is probably due to age of your OS. macOS Patcher has only ever been tested using a 10.14 Mojave (or 10.15 Catalina) machine as a host machine. I'm planning on improving support for older OSes in the future.
- The installer failing to boot is probably just a random issue and the estimates are always off. That's not a patcher issue at all.
- Since you're running on a hard drive, the OS runs very slow. I highly recommend an SSD (and 4GB of RAM to speed up application launch times). You were also entering the setup screen on a clean install which always talks longer even on supported machines.
- The graphics acceleration patches are only for other models. I patch all models equally except for the dual GPU patch, some AirPort patches, and of course all the MacBook4,1 specific patches. Graphics acceleration will never work on this machine.
- No idea about the Maps issue but that seems to be a particularly annoying app for graphical patch issues so it might just be a fluke.
- Brightness is in the same boat as acceleration, sleep and brightness control will never work either. I'd recommend checking out QuickShade in the App Store (Brightness Slider if you're running an older version) and Fermata on GitHub. The first app emulates brightness control by applying a filter on the screen. And the second one, keeps the machine awake to prevent it from freezing after trying to sleep. The lock screen functionality should still work but the backlight will always be on.

I'd like to shoutout another member of RMC, @Larsvonhier. He was the first person to try Mojave on the MacBook4,1 and has been the main pioneer of the extensive patches for it. I basically just had a platform to include it on but his work is extremely indispensable in this effort. And thanks to him and @dosdude1, I now have my own MacBook4,1 for testing.

Hi, and thanks for the reply! I really wasn't expecting it.
And, my post should in no way be taken as whining about anything related to the tool or the end result. I am amazed this was even possible, and that it was so easy to do (i'm a windows guy where win10 can run on a toaster without stress).

Thanks for explaining the limitations. It is easier to troubleshoot if I know what to expect under "optimal" conditions.

I made the post mostly because I see people asking questions, but once they find a solution they rarely come back to post. Also, I know when I was a lurker on this forum I was hesitant to try any method because I kept waiting for a post that 1. mentioned my exact machine, 2. mentioned the outcome. So, this is that post.

And, as a small follow-up on some apps that I managed to get to work and some that did not.

Working:
Adobe Acrobat Pro, Office 2019, Boom 2 (actually improves the audio), PopClip, Karabiner (my K key doesn't work, so I remapped one of the option keys), NightOwl, CheatSheet, CleanMyMacX, Bartender 3, MacPilot, Paragon NTFS, Radio Silence.

Not working:
TG Fan Pro, One Switch, Spectacle (but Magnet works).

Sorry... I have an irrelevant question...
I have an old printer that works well on MacOS high Sierra. I was wondering if it is possible to transfer its drivers to MacOS Mojave... any help is appreciated :)

A bit of a late reply but maybe my recent experience will be helpful. I connected an old Brother printer to my MacBook5,1(Mojave 10.14.6 Beta 4) via USB and almost instantly got a message if I would like to download drivers. Nice and easy plug and play.

Can some link me download for the telemetry plugin i and iousbhostfamily.kext i have no idea where to find them i require them to fix my kernel panics on macbook 4,1

What kernel panics have you been having on your MB4,1? How you used the latest version of macOS Patcher?

Thanks for replies.
My Mojave patcher usb is in HFS-extended journaled and my internal ssd is in APFS. I have already used disk utility to format my pendrive.
Any ideas what else could I do?
Thanks

Anyone here experiencing Spotify utilising 100% CPU all the time...?

MBP6,2 on dosdude1 patch...
Did you mean 'Spotlight?' If so,
  • System Preferences > Spotlight > Search Results > Uncheck all boxes
  • System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy > Add all volumes
I do this on all of my old systems running Mojave, since I don't use Spotlight.

Managed to get my MBP6,2 to rock on 10.14.5 thanks to dosdude1's patch...

One problem - whenever my mac goes into display sleep, the fans gradually build up speed to the point it max out noisily... Reset SMC doesn't help...

Any ideas...?

Interesting. Does the behavior change if you change the screen saver (System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver). Try changing to a non-animated screen saver.

This is a guess based on posts I've seen while I was trying to debug something else.

No I really meant Spotify...

And I always turn off screensavers...

And as usual both instances fixed themselves...

Also I am unable to enter recovery mode using CMD+R while booting. So I can't boot my MBP in any way. Does anyone have any idea how can I fix this? Like even reinstall of OS would be fine just to run it..
