General question in case someone else has the same issue.
I am running Mojave 10.14.6 on a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro (5,2). I am using the application "Calibre" v4 for managing as e-book collection and I notice that the e-book viewer doesn't work. I just get a blank white page. I have trawled forums and no-one seems to have this problem generally which makes me suspect my setup and possibly the display drivers. I would be interested if anyone else uses Calibre 4 and if it works. Note that Calibre v3 works ok and I have reverted to this but it would be nice to have the features of v4.

This is not going to help you directly solve your issue, but perhaps it will help with some clues. I just did an in place upgrade today from my High Sierra patched install to Mojave on my ancient 2008 MacBook Pro 4,1.

I upgraded my Calibre app to 4.9.1 and so far all e-pubs and a couple of PDFs in my Calibre library that I've tried are opening and viewing fine.

hi, with the latest dosdude1 mojave patch the original apple IR REMOTE works ok? or i need any workaround?
If you´re on MacBook 4,1 then the @dosdude1 patches won´t cover your machine as he never supported this unsupported machine. In this case you´d have to stick with my kext replacements as written in #13,755.
On all other machines you´d be fine (also IR-remote-wise) with his patcher and post-patches!

How would the performance of Mojave on a MP3,1 with SSD and GTX 680 compare to High Sierra? HS on HFS+ runs reasonably well wondering if it is worth the effort to take this old dinosaur to Mojave and APFS.
I´d do it, given that the GTX680 is fully supported (which you´d have to check first) or at least supported by the @dosdude1 patches for OpenGL operation under Mojave/Catalina.
The system itself is as snappy and responsive as ever and has no special requirements on your CPUs.
Even on C2D machines older than your MP3,1 it´s a great OS.

I use Mojave on a 3.1 with a Kepler GPU (weaker than 680) and a sata2 SSD. I almost forget that it is unsupported. Everything works. My other supported Mac Pro 5.1 with same GPU feels not way faster in daily tasks - even it runs on a PCI2.0x4 NVMe Blade.

For those who have a mid 2009 macbook 5,2 this is also supposed to work in Mojave as well but can confirm it works in Catalina on my macbook 5,2 unzip it then right click to rename it but edit out MB52 then save enter your password then open /System/Library/PreferncePanes delete the on there and replace it with the new version you might have to reboot

Looking for some help on the probable cause of Mojave patched installer stuck right at the beginning of copying files on my iMac 10,1 with stock HS on APFS SSD and latest ROM.

I upgraded my Macbook Air Late 2010 (MacbookAir 3.1) to Mojave Security Update 2020-002 (28/01/2020), and when the computer restarted the first time so that I could put the pendrive with the Dosdude patch (last version available), only the black screen was flashing every 30 seconds without the startup sound. I left it on for a while and then it made the startup sound and didn't do it anymore, but the screen kept flashing. I can hear the fan running. I tried to reset the SMC, PRAM / NVRAM, enter recovery modes with CMD + R and nothing worked. I thought it was a screen problem, but it was working perfectly before the update was restarted. Did the update corrupt the firmware or something? I had a password in the firmware too. If anyone can give me any help, I appreciate it. Sorry for the English because I used Google Translate.

Update:

I already managed to solve. I opened the computer and left it with the battery disconnected for a few minutes. So I called again and he was making the startup sound again, but flashing the screen. In desperation I turned him upside down and saw that the screen was being displayed, but very weak. I used a flashlight and then I could see that it was working, I entered the USB stick and applied the dosdude patch. And amazingly it allowed me to reset the PRAM / NVAM and returned to working normally. It was quite a scare. Everything working and Siri too. I didn’t know if I could delete the post, if it’s not possible, it’s just in case someone has the same problem.

Update MBP5,3 from 10.14.6 (18G2022) to 'SecUpd2020-001' (18G3020) successfully.
Reapplying macOS PostInstall with Force Cache Rebuild

Also worked on mid-2009 MB5,2 on HFS+ external disk. Again required an Onyx Maintenance to overcome sluggishness, but now it seems even more "stable" than before the update. Seriously considering moving my main system disk from HS to Mojave during the Presidents Day weekend.

Hey @dosdude1, I’m getting a 27” iMac from a buddy in a few weeks. It’s a Late 2009 and it has a i7 and a Radeon HD 4850 gpu. I have two questions I hope you can help me with.
1. Do these AMD gpus still have the App Store auto play crash issue?
2. I know the Radeon HD 5xxx and 6xxx series do not have working acceleration under Mojave. My question is why do the others work? (such as the 4850 and 2600 Pro) Do they use different kexts with different requirements?

Hey, can anyone confirm if that point 1 was solved after all?

I have an iMac late 2009 also and thinking about to install Mojave if all works well.

BTW, I'm choosing Mojave over Catalina because with Mojave you can still install the updates to the system directly from App Store like a genuine supported machine would do, right?

Thanks!

Installed the latest security update on my MacBook Pro late 2008 last night. It hasn't been without problems though. Firstly, after the installation I ended up in an infinite boot loop - chime, start booting, kernel panic, chime, etc. Then I realised I should re-install the post-install patches. So, booted from my external drive and re-installed them and it booted OK. Secondly, I've ended up in the same sleep/wake issue as I experienced last time. Last time, following someone's advice, I switched from Better battery life to Higher performance in the Energy Saver, and that fixed it. In the end I switched back to Better battery life, and it still worked fine. This time, I switched to Higher performance and it worked OK. Then, thinking the same as last time, I thought I'd switch back to Better battery life but it now has the sleep/wake issue again. So, for now I'm back to Higher performance. I don't particularly like this mode because my fans tend to ramp up, so I'd like to go back to Better battery life. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Early 2008 MacPro (APFS ROM applied) updated to SecUpd2020-001 without issue.

I prefer and use a "manual" method:
  1. Download update file
  2. Modify package by following steps outlined in Post 1 of Unsupported HiSierra Thread
  3. Reboot from DosDude USB and run Post Install Patches
  4. Reboot normally and let DosDude Updater update a couple of overwritten patches
  5. Reboot and good to go
Accepting and going though the auto method after notification did ultimately work for my previous update but had a few hiccups I had to overcome ... perhaps because I run an RX580 card.

Going back to manual works well. I am in control and know what is happening at each stage.

Already successfully installed the 2020-001 automatically from SU to an APFS volume (including cloning to other HFS+ volumes as backups) albeit with a few hiccups. But would like to try the manual method, which would mean reapplying the update from the standalone.

Wondering if it could be done by editing

/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

which currently shows the build as 18G3020 "down" to 18G2022

Thereby "tricking" it into thinking the update hasn't yet been run? Or would some other file(s) need editing as well? Thinking of doing the reapply to one of the already updated HFS+ volumes. Given the right edits, would this even work in principle?

Still having issues with sleep after the latest security update. Works fine when set to Higher performance in Energy Saver, but suffers the transition timeout and reboot when set to Better battery life. Have so far tried resetting NVRAM and setting "pmset -a darkwakes 0" as suggested elsewhere. Tried booting into safe mode but ended up with the prohibit symbol - I guess I'm not pressing the Shift key at the correct time (tried it once early, before apfs scrolling text and got prohibit symbol, and another time after scrolling text and it didn't go into safe mode). Could try resetting the SMC, I suppose.

I don't know much about this kind of stuff, but does it use a different graphics kext for the different graphics modes?

Been using this exact setup daily for going on a year and it works well.

I went to Mojave then converted to APFS. I notice no performance diff with newer filesys

Noone with normal reflexes will regard this thing as "snappy". UI lag has always been noticeable on OSX, and as SW revs pull farther away from legacy HW it gets worse: (click) • • • (zoink) app window opens, button press accepted, window status change, whatever. OSX has always been laggy and it gets incrementally worse on unsupported Macs.

You have to run an SSD!

Also, right from start create a dosdude recovery partition with patched Mojave installer so you can quickly boot into tools and sort things / repatch if you hit a glitch after an update. This will make life easier as you move along. That said, my setup has been very SW stable.

Recently has trouble with some old OWC RAM that's dying.

You can load the thing with RAM for < $150 these days. I got 16Gs for 100 a year ago and its worked well under load, but thermals changed. Then recently I started seeing spontaneous resets and red lights inside. I pulled some and re-arranged others in sockets and haven't got to bottom of what's going on but it's HW. Old PSU maybe getting sketchy? Fans all work and its clean

Added eSATA and USB3 cards, which run natively. But with all drive bays populated, 680, 2nd DVD, SSD, all RAM sockets pop, addt PCI, maybe power load is at edge?

Parallels Desktop VM is one thing that's goofed: It runs but too slow to be unusable. Some part of IO or mem management has taken a hit and it has become compute bound somewhere deep, like syscalls are taking 100x or 1000x longer to service than they should. I can only guess. Maybe crazy cache thrashing? The Mac side is fine, but the Win side is at 100% just responding to UI.

Is the 680 is overkill for daily driving? But no hiccups. With new 10bit displays and Photoshop I wish I had a Quadro instead of 680.

I'm very happy to have access to Mojave on this old Mac as even though it's 1/2 the speed of a new mini and weights 10 times more! It's still useful ??

You should be able to reapply the update manually without editing the plist.
You should also be able to apply updates directly to a HFS+ volume if you defeat the "VolumeCheck" function in a similar way to "InstallationCheck" one.

Probably best to confirm on a spare HFS+ clone first.

Parallels VM has normal speed if you go back to Mojave 10.14.3. Something changed in 10.14.4 but Apple still hasn't released the kernel xnu code for that yet.

Interesting. I am just about to RMA some RAM Sticks I got from OWC back in 2010 on my Early 2008 MacPro for similar issues.

After swapping them in different combinations, I thought I had solved the issue but it cropped up again and the sticks are now toast. I did further rearrangements and finally managed properly ID the faulty sticks.

OWC has a lifetime warranty on their RAM so looking to send them back for replacements. Perhaps the person that sold you the Mac can get them replaced for you.

My dodgy ones are 4GB sticks and I am trying to get them to agree that I pay the difference to upgrade to 8GB ones.

I've cloned my OS 10.4.6 to another APFS SSD in my 3,1 and can't get the cloned system to boot. It
appears and is selected in Startup Drives. Same thing with Option restart. Does a cloned patched OS
need to be patched after the cloning to boot?

No. The patches are cloned with the drive.

How did you clone? If you use something like CCC, it would boot as this would create the required APFS "Preboot" partitions and such.
