You could test this theory by replacing the replacement copies installed from the directories in "macOS Catalina Patcher/Contents/Resources/macOS Post Install/Contents/Resources/gfxshared".

kexts/AppleGraphicsControl.kext
kexts/AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext

privateframeworks/SkyLight.framework

with copies extracted with Pacificist from "Install macOS Catalina Beta/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD". Just reapply the 'legacy patches' with those Catalina copies and force rebuild the kernel cache.

You'll still have the Telsa patches installed but they shouldn't interfere with the Kepler card running properly. If you are worried, boot from the usb installer, delete the files below from
/System/Library/Extensions using the Terminal window and use the post install patcher (with no patches selected) to force rebuild the kernel cache.

GeForceTesla.kext
GeForceTeslaGLDriver.bundle
GeForceTeslaVADriver.bundle
NDRVShim.kext
NVDANV50HalTesla.kext
NVDAResmanTesla.kext

I had suggested awhile back that Dosdude1 add a 'Disable auto patching' option to the Catalina Patcher (primarily for the benefit of MacPro 5,1 users) which would create a usb installer with auto patching inhibited.

Thank you! I did as you instructed, and Catalina booted properly. It seems as though Dosdude’s patcher is indeed patching with legacy video drivers on an iMac with an upgraded video card. Wholeheartedly agree that auto patching should be disabled. But I’m thrilled to have a work around.

So, I made a USB installer from the latest patcher. Booted into Mojave Recovery, disabled sip, adjusted to the correct no_compat boot-args. and rebooted.

In Mojave, I selected my new patchd Catalina USB installer as the startup disk and rebooted...

I initialized the Catalina install by selecting the "Reinstall macOS" and pointed it to an SATA SSD formatted to APFS.

Then I get this... (I tried several times and gave up, what am I doing incorrectly?)

EDIT 1:
Tried again, same result. Tried installing directly to machine from Mojave, no joy.. Same error...
Deleted everything... I’ll start from scratch again if anyone Presents an idea to try.

EDIT 2:
Resolved thanks to @tsialex - I thought I had the latest patcher/catalina installer but the build number listed right in the window title bar indicated otherwise. I didn't even notice it. After this was pointed out by Alex, I downloaded the newer 1.04 patcher version and pulled in a new Catalina Beta installer. With some small trepidation, I discovered a stuck copy of the older version in my /tmp folder. Once that was deleted, the patcher worked properly, and the install went off without a hitch. I don't believe this stuck file was directly responsible for the original problem, as I use a USB stick for the 1st and 2nd attempts. However, during all these trials, the old patched installer in my /tmp folder became firmly embedded and I had to use a utility to help me delete it. All is well now... Thanks to those who helped.

how do I patch the hard drive in APFS? Catalina is installed on an APFS partition

You have to boot from the patched usb installer that your created to install patch Catalina in the first place. When booted, select the 'macOS post install patcher' option in the list. Also, you will need to check the 'force cache rebuild' checkbox when it appears after the patching occurs.

It's the beta downloaded from the newest version of the dosdude1 patcher tool.
Is your Catalina Patcher USB at least 16GB and have you checked using first aid also check to see if you downloaded the full installer from the patcher it should be 7.3 GB for example I installed the macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental update had to make a new Mojave patcher then downloaded Mojave on my iMac 9,1 but it was only 22MB went to my MacBook 5,2 and downloaded Mojave and got the full installer 6.5 GB

I have already made several times, he does not boot from the hard drive. The system is installed but when I start I see no hard disk. have it just as you have said .....

How is current performance on a MacBookPro5,1 compared to Mojave?
Does the PreMetal Acceleration serves the same performance than in Mojave?

With this performance i could use the system, but slower would not be the best solution.

I am reading this topic since it was created, not sure if it had been already answered and i didn't recognize it.

There are a couple things you can do. My best recommendation would be to create a second, APFS partition on your SSD, and install Catalina on that (as it is a beta OS after all). To perform the installation, you can use Catalina Patcher to either create a bootable USB installer drive to use for the installation, or install directly without using a USB drive at all. Just select the second partition when performing the installation. If you'd rather convert your main partition to APFS and do an upgrade, make a bootable USB installer with Catalina Patcher, boot from that, open Disk Utility, select your main partition, and select "Unmount". Then in the Edit menu of Disk Utility in the Menu Bar, select "Convert to APFS". Be aware that this is a one way operation, and cannot be undone. Once finished, close Disk Utility, and proceed with the Catalina installation on that volume. All post-install patches are handled for you automatically, so just go through the installer and you're done.

Thank you very much for your advice, @dosdude1, will follow to the letter.
However, is it possible to convert my working drive to APFS (having a clone just in case something goes south), then update?

Is any of the fellow boardmembers already running Catalina on an MacBookPro4,1 17-inch, and willing to share his observations about performance, glitches, caveats, etc. so far?

I had the same error when I attempted to install macOS Sierra on APFS volume.

macOS High Sierra is the first macOS release that supported APFS as the boot volume. The macOS Sierra release only supported APFS as the non-boot volumes.

Is your USB pen drive 16GB and is it formatted correctly Extended Journaled

i use a partition to make the installer. i looked into the installer app and it seems the Basesystem.dmg does not exist.
