I'll send you a script to install the APFS Boot pane on Mojave, and then you'll be able to.

Ok, in your Mojave install, download and run this script, and that will install the APFS Boot prefpane.

@dosdude1,

I have a "supported" MacBookPro 2012 that have this dual boot scenario:
  1. Mojave on internal SSD
  2. Catalina on external SSD
When I boot, I have to press "option" key and select which one to boot to. I would like to avoid this step.
Will installing this script to both work in order to skip the step above?

Thanks.

Other question is will the same script and file work in Catalina? Thanks.

On a machine that supports APFS booting natively, all you have to do is set the Startup Disk in System Preferences.

Yes, the script will also work under Catalina.

Use a USB installer.

I've used the USB installer and it has worked, but now it doesn't boot at all.
Furthermore, when I boot my machine, a flashing folder with a question mark appears.

Is there something I can do?

Now, apply the APFS Patch using the post-install tool.

I've already tried to apply the APFS patch many times (also enabling cache forced rebuilding) but it doesn't works, I'm using the last Mojave's patcher tool.
You'll probably have to re-install Mojave onto that APFS volume then, as converting it doesn't generate the necessary preboot volume, for some reason.

Just tested the latest beta on my MBP 5,3. From the quick view I would say, that all works as expected (sound, camera, bluetooth, action buttons, night shift).

Kudos to all contributors and especially to @dosedude1!

Machine Support
As it currently seems, all machines with at least SSE4.1 support (C2D penryn and upwards) seem to be able to at least boot Catalina. This covers all of the machines that were able to run Mojave, even the officially unsupported systems.

Some systems appear to be fully compatible. However Apple blocks them from installing Catalina, due to existing configurations of those systems, which are not compatible.
Those systems include the Mac Pro 4,1 & 5,1 as well as 2010 & 2011 iMacs, if they feature upgraded, metal-compatible GPUs and compatible WiFi/Bluetooth-cards. Mac Pros also require to be running non dual x55xx CPUs (like X56xx) to omit audio stuttering. An installer to enable these systems is available here.

Early-2008 or newer Mac Pro, iMac, or MacBook Pro
MacPro3,1
MacPro4,1
iMac8,1
iMac9,1
iMac10,x
iMac11,x (systems with AMD Radeon HD 5xxx and 6xxx series GPUs will be almost unusable due to the lack of acceleration)
iMac12,x (systems with AMD Radeon HD 5xxx and 6xxx series GPUs will be almost unusable due to the lack of acceleration)
MacBookPro4,1
MacBookPro5,x
MacBookPro6,x
MacBookPro7,1
MacBookPro8,x

Late-2008 or newer MacBook Air or Aluminum Unibody MacBook
MacBookAir2,1
MacBookAir3,x
MacBookAir4,x
MacBook5,1

Early-2009 or newer Mac Mini or white MacBook
Macmini3,1
Macmini4,1
Macmini5,x
MacBook5,2
MacBook6,1
MacBook7,1

Early-2008 or newer Xserve
Xserve2,1
Xserve3,1

Video Card Support

As with the machine support, all video cards that were supported on Mojave, supported or unsupported systems, can still run Catalina.

Pre-Metal AMD video cards (Radeon HD 6xxx series and older without acceleration, Radeon HD 4xxx series and older with acceleration.)
Pre-Metal Nvidia video cards (GeForce 5xx series and older, i.e. 8600M(GT)/8800M(GT), 9400M/9600M(GT), 320M/330M)
Pre-Metal Intel video cards (Intel HD Graphics 3000 and Intel HD Graphics Arrandale)

Full acceleration for older Nvidia and Intel cards has been achieved on Catalina beta 1 to 3.

Installation

macOS Catalina can be installed on an unsupported system using @dosdude1's macOS Catalina Patcher tool or @0403979's macOS Patcher 3.0 beta tool.

Dual boot no go for me the only way to go from Mojave to catalina is to boot in the usb installer catalina and reinstall the patches

Hello everyone, I want to install coreDisplay and SkyLight, as I understand it, these 2 folders need to be moved to /System/Library/Frameworks and /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks . But these folders are write-protected, please help me to unlock these folders. In the first post of the author, it is said that you can move files there if the framebuffer is working, maybe there is some kind of instruction how to turn it on?

Try sudo mount -uw / then killall Finder this should mount the system filesystem and make it writable.
