So I've been trying to install the previous 2 betas using the Catalina Patch Installer & it always returns with the same error message halfway through creating the bootable USB. I've tried multiple memory sticks to no avail. In the screenshot you'll find what I see. Any insight? Thanks in Advance.

So, I wanted to use Catalina mostly for the Sidecar function, and to use some programs which require a higher OS than what I have. Would you recommend installing Catalina now in this way, and updating later, or waiting until the full release comes out and more bugs have been fixed with running Catalina on older computers? I have a MacBookPro5,3 2.53GHz, currently running 10.11.6, if that makes a difference.

oh .. that's very good !! how did you do that .. please tell it to me,
I like it very much, I would like to have it like this :)

there is a new Xtrafinder 1.5.1 which also makes the icons on the left side in color
https://github.com/rmc-team/bluesky/releases/tag/1.4.2 if you are good using the terminal follow Julian's instructions here

try installing using the Catalina Patcher using the Install to this Machine method

Just installed 19A582a on a MBP4.1 and everything seems to be working fine except my keyboard backlight control. I still get the on screen overlay but its stuck at 'off' and will not adjust with F5/F6.

I can't believe the lengths people go to make Mac OS work on their machines no matt
Apple knows how to utilize planned obsolescence to devalue many older but still perfectly usable Macs. Unfortunately for them, people here are committed to keeping these old Macs going.

I have Mojave installed on an unsupported 2011 17" MBP (mainly for dark mode) and it runs great with the dGPU disabled using the NVRAM variable. Haven't tried Catalina yet though.
Why is your sidebar grayed out?
This is a bug I've seen with Mojave and Catalina installed on Metal-unsupported Macs. Not sure why this happens but for me the fix is to simply use dark mode (bug only affects light mode).

first quote was meant to be much longer post, but then I changed my mind. I posted that by mistake.

I hadn't applied the BlueSky patches at that time

Use the Catalina Patcher and use Install to this Machine method it does work I have never tried making an ISO image then once you have installed the Catalina GM then you can try making a Cat usb patcher I was successful after I installed the GM

I've never had backlight on my mbp 4,1 with Catalina. I think kext is not present. The keyboard backlight work with Mojave.

Exactly when do you hold down Command-Option-R in the install process?
I believe you would hold down Command-Option-R as the computer was turning on before starting the install process. This starts up the computer from the Recovery Partition instead of your main hard drive, allowing you to do things like repartition or reformat your hard drive. You would modify the hard drive in any ways you needed to before starting installation, because most of the modifications you can do would erase the data within that partition.

In this case, he only needed to use Command-Option-R to reformat his partition to APFS format, though I’m not sure how that differs from OSX Extended Journaled, since it was introduced in High Sierra (I am most familiar with Yosemite through El Capitan). I’m sure it was necessary, but I’m not sure why.

Just found that the previous constant crashing of Apple Maps seems to be fixed now with the golden master Catalina build (19A582a). Hope this keeps up to final release ;-)

Had this error recently when running the patcher on Catalina itself. Then tried the same constellation (installer version, macOS Catalina installer version, external disk) on Mojave and viola, it worked without this error. Might be some bug in the patcher tool...

It's not an issue with the patcher tool, it's an issue with Catalina Developer Preview 8. Apple screwed up something in ASR in DP8, which causes the error when restoring BaseSystem. The "Install to This Machine" option is not affected by this issue.

With beta 10 and 1.1.5 patcher, I created a USB boot disk, but when I boot off the USB stick, it starts to boot but then gives me a screen that looks like the attached file. Anyone else see this?

Thanks!

Last beta I installed was beta8 and I skipped beta9.

Try building the drive again, and using a different USB drive if possible.

Just create your drive using any version of macOS that is NOT Catalina DP8. DP8 had a bug with ASR, where it would falsely report an error. If you MUST use DP8 to create the drive, you can follow the steps found here to patch Catalina Patcher to bypass that error check. The "Install to This Machine" option is not affected by this issue, so you can use that as well.

Just a quick question, what's the difference between @dosdude1's patcher tool vs @0403979's patcher tool, and does it matter which one I use?
Mine is a nice, streamlined GUI, and is completely automated, while Julian's is a command-line based patcher that is designed for more experienced users. It also supports the MacBook4,1, which I do not support with my patcher due to the very poor hardware support, and very poor performance you'll experience when running anything later than OS X 10.8 on the MacBook4,1.
