It worked! Notably, I had to remount / as writable (`sudo mount -uw /; killall Finder`) before the script functioned properly.
Unfortunately, I'm now facing another issue: every time I turn "Automatically adjust brightness" off, it automatically turns itself back on a few moments later. This wouldn't be as much of a problem if my MacBook didn't constantly think it was in the dark, causing it to dim the display.
Strange. Have not noticed that. Will test again with that checkmark off.
Apropos script: It tends to throw a lot of "cannot overwrite..." messages, but always worked as intended anyway.
You might cure the situation on your ´book by aid of some 3rd party tool like "brightness slider" or similar. They sometimes work even before patching with the CCFL framework, and always afterwards for sure.

I have now tried this three times and is now on my fourth fresh install.

The patch installs, and then the system breaks. The first two times I didn't remount /, the third time I did. No difference. After running the patch no application will start. No error messages or anything, just no response when clicking on any application in the dock or anywhere else. The system itself is still responsive. Whatever is open can be moved around and interacted with to some extent. Trying to shut down or reboot just leads to an empty screen with the desktop wallpaper and nothing else, and it's stuck there. Trying to boot has it stuck on the boot screen.

I downloaded Catalina today, so maybe something has chanced and the patch needs an update...

Any ideas?

Did you try option 5 which is to install both patches

My brother is attempting to install Catalina on a Late 2011 MBP.

He gets a successful installation but AirDrop is missing. We have tried a couple of methods in some previous posts but nothing worked.

Also what would be the chances of having Handoff working on this device? I installed a 2012 MBP Airport card in it when I owned it; so it has the hardware etc.

Have you already tried here? : https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-10-15-catalina-on-unsupported-macs.2183772/post-27891116

An update on the install of 19A603 to my MacPro 5.1. After a lot of experimentation and frustration, I found that the install that I was installing over was damaged and the install would either not proceed and just reboot or error out. I reverted to an archived version of my OS taken after the install of the original release and was able to install over that, without any issues. I am typing this from the updated OS. Thanks to all!

Also, I'm pretty sure you can remove DisableLibraryValidation from /Library/Extensions/ now as we won't be needing that for any of the SSE4.2 stuff anymore.
Is there a version of DisableLibraryValidation that won't cause the new Music.app to crash? (MacPro3,1, Catalina).

I had not heard of it causing crashes.
DLV.kext was only needed for usage of the netkas metal driver patch to my knowledge which is no longer needed now that AAAmouSSE.kext is available.

I tried using an app called "Brightness Slider" (from the MAS) to adjust the brightness, but it didn't make any difference.
Changing the brightness isn't inherently a problem; rather, the brightness automatically decreases a few moments after I increase it.
I've recorded a video of the problem, and uploaded it here. Note that the brightness did increase when I adjusted the slider accordingly, but it decreased automatically shortly afterward.

Ok, so I installed the 10.15.0 build (18A602) on a CCFL based MacBook 5,2.
After fixing the trackpad/function key behaviour with post install patch tool from dosdude for this ´book, there still was the predictable backlight dim-freeze (no reaction to F1/F2 other than the overlay symbol).
So I r/w mounted the system volume and ran the 10.14.2 CCFL patch. Reboot - voila, it works.
The difference to the A1261 (MBP4,1) seems to be that there is no "adjust backlight to ambient light" option, thus no snapback. Perfect.
Another idea: Is it possible that your MBP4,1 has an exchanged LCD panel (i.e. after a repair)? Could deliver wrong/unsuitable EDIF data to the system in such a case.
As my main office computer is also a MPB4,1 (running Mojave), I´m a bit reluctant to experiment with it now, but if I have some time to spare I can try Catalina and the patches from an external drive sometime soon to see what the problem might be... stay tuned!

I was running the brightness slider on my MacBook 5,2 I do know for it to work properly I had to leave the brightness in display settings at full and not put the bright slider at full otherwise it does dim and and you can add shortcut keys like F1-F2 to toggle up or down and check the box to remember the last setting at login

go to page 234 posts 5838 and 5841 and try the method I use to install BlueSky

That didn't work. Same issue. What did work was replacing those files using the terminal in the recovery environment (booting from the install disk). Thanks! 👍

Now onto getting the trackpad to appear in settings so I can change trackpad settings. Last install it worked, now it complains that it can't find a bluetooth trackpad. It also defaulted to UK English this time instead of English. Weird.

I don't believe that's the issue, as on El Capitan (on an external HDD), automatic brightness adjustment based on ambient light works without issue -- and I can reliably disable it, too. I will admit, however, that my MacBook's screen is suspiciously pristine, considering all the dents on the lower casing of the machine... (I had bought the MacBook used, very recently.)

If you do end up trying Catalina on your MBP4,1, do tell if you're able to get the patched USB installer to work, as that was an issue I was experiencing earlier (and never did completely resolve).
