Is it possible using a bluetthoot dongle ?

On Catalina only Broadcom wifi card with this minimum version 0x14E4, 0x9* can use an AirDrop patch (and consequently a bt 4.0 dongle for continuity with ios devices).

The bt4.0 dongle should work if plugged as a standard Bluetooth 4.0 BLE but without Airdrop and continuity features.

I don't have a long enough ethernet cable to test but I wonder if Airdrop could work this way

Update, got the temps down to around 50-55 with high sierra.

If you're happy with High Sierra, the temps are a little high (if that's idle) but not terrible. If you're operating your MBP on a flat/hard surface with unobstructed air flow and ambient temp is normal room temperature, you may need to think about whether you applied the MX-2 and reassembled your heat sinks/fans correctly.

My MBP6,2 runs Catalina 10.15.3 about 10 deg C hotter at idle than it runs High Sierra 10.13.6 (with the fixes I mentioned earlier). Google "lower cpu gpu utilitization macOS catalina" and you'll find plenty of articles like this one. The trick for me that lowered CPU/GPU temps on my MBP6,2 was the fixes that I mentioned earlier:
  • System Preferences > Spotlight > Search Results: Uncheck all options
  • System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy: Add all Volumes
  • System Preferences > Accessibility > Display: Check "Reduce motion"
  • System Preferences > Accessibility > Display: Check "Reduce transparency"
Start with the Display settings and I suspect you'll see immediate benefit.

Hello, I am trying to install Catalina on my mid-2007 iMac with a Penryn CPU, but every time, like clockwork, the entire machine resets at the "5 minutes remaining" mark. Does anyone know what might be causing this? High Sierra worked fine, never tried Mojave.

Edit: Disregard! It looks like it was a problem with my USB drive. I put the installer onto an external hard drive instead, and it installed just fine.

Need more infos here:
- do you install to a drive with APFS or HFS+ file system?
- did you update your boot EFI running High Sierra or afterwards with i.e. the tool from dosdude1 ?
- which installer and which version of Catalina are you installing ?

So Guys,

Got Catalina working on a raid.

BUT

How can i upgrade to 15.3???

Thx

It should work because from your ouput the AirPort Extreme 0x14E4, 0x9* and higher (example 0xA*, 0xB* 0xC* and so on) have a recent apple broadcom firmware, your macbook6,1 (Mac-F22C8AC8) is very similar to macbook7,1 (Mac-F22C89C8) , on MacBook7,1 I have the same Broadcom wifi card.

Replace both the files attached in your /S/L/Extensions/
Install and replace the two kext properly as explained in the previous guide (chown, chmod, kextcache), and at the reboot you should have a working AirDrop on Catalina.

edit: This attached AirDrop patch is only valid for Macbook6,1 .
Thanks! Worked like a charm.

Following @ASentientBot's post, I got the Japanese Input Method partially working by replacing these files from Mojave:

Code:
/usr/lib/libmecabra.dylib
/System/Library/Input Methods/JapaneseIM.app
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/TextInput.framework

Just by replacing those file, the Japanese IM worked, however after messing around with it a little bit I am still seeing some strange symbols popping up following by a crash of the JapaneseIM.... But I can still type some simple sentences in Japanese without any problems. Yay!

---------------

Edit: Got the JapaneseIM fully working by replacing one more framework (With no more crashing or "おはよ4"):
Code:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/TextInputCore.framework

Hopefully this will help to fix the problems that Japanese people on unsupported Macs are encountering. Good night!

That is an outdated post. You just need to replace:

Code:
/usr/lib/libmecabra.dylib
/System/Library/Input Methods/JapaneseIM.app
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/TextInputCore.framework

After replacing those files don't forget to restart your Mac.
Please ensure that if you replace the ".dylib" file or the ".framework" file incorrectly, it would lead to an unbootable system.

These files are from Mojave. You can download and replace.

Yes,Same result.
also the chinese input - Cangjie will have issue. it can't work normally.

If use original 10.15.3 file, Japanese Input can be work when selected "Kana" in typing method, but it can't be used. because no suggestion will be showed.

If replaced Mojave file, Japanese Input will be lost and Chinese Input - Cangjie can't work normally. it will not show suggestion and only can type single word.

Replace Mojave file may be can't working with iMac 10,1.

I am currently downloading and OTA installing 10.15.4 beta 5, and I guess after the understandings of AMFI, it should work without issues, meanwhile I also adjusted the catalinaswufix to add the new @ASentientBot Disable library validation script (it allows to boot a patched 10.15.4 with AMFI enabled) which creates a new plist (non-xml binary encoded) in the main user's Preferences and almost surely after an OTA update it will not be modified or replaced by any macOS Installer post-install-scripts, simply because it's a custom file.

The attached file should be launched when at least 1% of OTA downloading is completed.

For example with 10.15.4 beta 5 the current OTA package size is 2.95 gb , then 1% of its downloading ≃ 29.5 mb

Sorry if this has been addressed before but haven't found a solution yet. I'm trying to install that latest (as of Mar 10) Catalina Patcher onto my 2008 MP 3.1 and I can't get it work at all. I've tried installing via a volume on a USB and external hard drive onto a partition on an internal hdd and, thinking that may have been the source of the issues, installed a ssd via a PCIe slot (which makes the drive register as External). I formatted the ssd in APFS and manage to get the end of the initial install screen; the computer restarts with the bar basically full ("less than a minute remaining"). Where I'd expect it to go to into Catalina, it will usually go back to the installer volume and then "restart from problem". When I try to select my ssd as the startup disk, I get another reboot back into the installer volume. I tried running the post install (the installer recognizes catalina on the ssd) and after doing that it'll restart me to the installer. Again I select the ssd for startup, computer restarts, I run through the APFS mod,
get to a gray screen, the apple comes up with another installer bar and then the system shuts off at about a quarter of the way in. Any help would be appreciated.

Just reinstalled Catalina and did what you said, now it runs at around 40-50 celsius, more around the 50s, but I'm thinking of buying a jtag programmer and apply @dosdude1 s patch, will that reduce the heat? And also, does catalina support full sleep, brightness control and displayport video output on mbp8,3?

Did you replace something incorrectly ? I worked perfectly on my machine.
