Finally got Catalina to work on my 3.1! However it keeps on crashing after some time. Not sure if this is something you guys have already seen?

If anyone has an idea why this is happening I'd love to hear what you think

are you suffering photos doesn't show RAW files correctly. it is just like me, please if you found solution tell me,
While I do not have any RAW files to test with I experienced those issues with jpg files. Following a tipp by @ASentientBot on reddit @Rastafabi led me to this tool, which I used to force the colordepth to be 8bit, rather than 10bit, which solved my issues.

Thanks for reminding us of this ResXtreme tool.
Also on MBP5,2 17", when purposely setting 10 bits/sample with ResXtreme, the display looked bad (wrong colours but still readable). Fine again after going back to the original 8 bits/sample.

I remember a few people were having trouble with Zoom on non-Metal showing black for videos... had to use it just now and I found a link to a version that works for me.

Hope that helps someone!

Tagging those of you who asked about this before @Paul A Jackson @bradhaggard
Thanks very much.

It works, though I am not sure if this version may have security vulnerabilities.

It's usable anyway!

Hey again, I wanted to ask 2 more things, are the expresscard port and thunderbolt 2 ports fully supported on 10.15.3? I want to buy an egpu enclosure and connect it via thunderbolt 2 on my mbp8,3, as I will deactivate the dedicated graphics as soon as my programmer arrives.
Anyone?

Viewing macOS events live using Crescendo by Stephen Davis as described by Howard Oakley, https://eclecticlight.co/2020/03/20/viewing-macos-events-live-using-crescendo/ is well worth the read unless one already uses this very useful tool. Especially useful to those who frequent here.🧐

Mac curmudgeon/developer and art history professor, Dr. Howard Oakley, is an indispensable Mac resource. His kick-•ss set of tools for things that should be made available by Apple is outstanding work at no cost! https://eclecticlight.co/

Hi everybody! I just wanted to share a trick with you all. I installed Catalina on my MacBook Pro Mid 2009 and beside everything runs well, I was very annoyed that during idle times the fan was running at max.

After some research I unloaded "photoanalysisd" and "mediaanalysisd" via the terminal and since then (also after several restarts) the fan is quite most of the time and my MacBook seems also a little bit faster.

Here is the command:

launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.photoanalysisd.plist && launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.mediaanalysisd.plist

I hope this will help some of you!

PS: Try this at your own risk!!!
PPS: Unloading "photolibraryd" resulted in a non working photos app.
PPPS: You can load them again by the changing "unload" to "load".

I also have a mid 2009 machine (MBP5,2) and after first installing Catalina on it, the two demons you mentioned, plus warmd I think, really had a lot of work to do to convert the photos and music libraries to the new format.
But after several hours, things calmed down. It didn‘t repeat when going to new Catalina versions.

Good evening! I successfully brought my good old Mac Pro 3.1 to Catalina today. I cannot thank @dosdude1 often enough for this wonderful and very helpful option.

Unfortunately, one thing doesn't work: AirDrop! I'm using an installed Atheros card which previously worked regarding AirDrop in Mojave. I had seen in the thread that there is a fix for Broadcom cards. Does anyone know of a solution for Atheros cards? Thanks in advance for helpful tips ...

I have to add that there's just an AirDrop icon in the sidebar of a Finder window, without the word "AirDrop" next to it. What does/could it mean?

Hello! In desperate need of help. I went to install Catalina onto the new APFS drive (RAID0), restarted and said it wasn’t able to be installed, so I unplugged the bootable drive and restarted as the directions said, after restating it would load 5% then restart again. PLEASE HELP!!

Hi everyone and again thanks for all you do here. I've usually had good luck with my 2009 early iMac. Lately, though I have had constant problems with apps freezing or not opening at all. Using 10.15.3. When they do work they are extremely slow. A couple days ago I started fresh with a new installation. Within hours, the same problems arose. I remembered in the past that the System Integrity Protection could be an issue. I checked and found the following messages in Terminal. I restarted from the USB drive, disabled SIP and restarted. I continued to get the same 2 messages. Thanks in advance for any advice. And BTW, is there a recovery disk in Catalina?

That is normal in the first screenshot that means SIP is disabled. How much memory is installed in your Mac you need at least 4GB to run Catalina decently

Hi. I was wondering how the Music app has been doing for you guys on Catalina because I might use it instead of iTunes ( I installed it with Retrospective).
The music app runs fine for me but I still prefer iTunes

I have 8 GB. The confusing part is I have never had these type of issues before. Just popped up recently. Apps confirm no virus or malware issues.

What's the process of installing the .4 seed 6 beta over 10.15.3? Seems like some patch may be needed in that I've had failures trying to install previous seeds.

There is no Catalina AirDrop Broadcom 4360 patch for (0x14E4, 0x8*) , minimum "supported" cards are 0x9* and higher: 0xA* , 0xB*, 0xC*, 0xD*, 0xE*, 0xF* and so on.

Till Mojave apple allowed some kind of "AirDrop legacy" that worked also on Atheros wifi cards, from Catalina they merged all the continuity features with a kind of AirDrop enhanced, and only certain recent Broadcom Wifi cards patching the AirPort Brcm4360 Wifi driver can work.

Finally got my 2012 Macbook Pro running Catalina with a Raid0 configuration . Running into a few issues like every application seems to be extra laggy, I cannot use migration assistant, my photo library on my Time Machine won't allow me to drag and drop into my new photos library. The biggest issue is my external outputs are messing everything up. When I plug in the thunderbolt to HDMI the main display goes to a grey screen and restarts. It also won't allow me to use two external outputs anymore. If these are easy fixes let me know! If not will be returning to Mojave :(
