To Icubed. Thanks. I changed my post you responded to after trying something else that ended up working. I deleted the files I downloaded from dosdude, then downloaded them again and ran through the entire process again. That time it worked, although I did need several attempts at making the bootable usb drive because of errors I kept getting.

TUI is proven to be more versatile and complete, currently. The GUI by dosdude1 is still a WIP and works for many. Try it, you will be in new territory and you will find on the unsupp Big Sur thread many more than I, much better versed in OCLP on Big Sur willing to help. Also, OpenCore Patcher Paradise on Discord is somewhat enlightening but useful.

We are off-topic, now.
I get it and will stay off asking about Big Sur on this thread. Thank you big time for pointing me into the right direction, K two. Your expertise and kindness are highly appreciated.

Catalina Supplemental Update Guide

renderTimingPixel.png

Guide
Credit goes to u/imtherealshady97 for providing us with this guide on how to install the Catalina Supplemental Update on patched Macs. I'm reposting his instructions with some added details for those who need it. You will need the Catalina Patcher USB, and the CatalinaOTAswufix application, which should be available on the MacRumors forum, which I'll post a link to when I find it.
Note: The build number for this supplemental update is 19H1030 (as of April 26, 2021).

  1. Open CatalinaOTAswufix app. (If it gives you errors, move the application to your Desktop. Make sure it's the actual application and not an alias. Delete it from your Applications folder once you move it)
  2. Click on "Software Update Fix"
  3. After you enter your password, System Preferences will open and begin checking for Software Updates. Click under the cog where it says "Details", and click restore defaults to revert to general public updates. You may need to close the settings pane a couple times for it to take effect.
  4. When the normal software updates (not beta) show up, click on "Another update is available. It should say "macOS Catalina 10.15.7 Supplemental Update". Click Download and install as if you were doing a normal update.
  5. Let the update run completely. What will happen is, the computer will seem as if its installing it, but it actually reboots your machine instead. So just let it run through.
  6. When your machine reboots, open the CatalinaOTAswufix app then click "OTA Update Fix".
  7. Open System Preferences > Software Update. When the update comes up again, hit "OTA Update Fix" again before you press Install.
  8. Let the update run through the installation process. Before the installation process is complete, you will need your Catalina Patcher USB.
  9. When your machine reboots, hold down the Option key. If you haven't already, plug in your Patcher USB, select it and boot to it.
  10. Click on macOS Post Install. Make sure you select your correct Mac model. Make sure that the "Legacy Platform Compatibility Patch" is selected if its not already.
  11. Click Patch. Pay attention to it, because when the patch process is complete, make sure you check the box that says "Force Cache Rebuild", then click Reboot.
  12. Your machine will reboot normally to the login screen. It’s a bit slow at first but it will reboot properly.
  13. After your machine reboots, make sure to open Patch Updater and check for any patch updates for the system. Install them if necessary. You may or may not get a message saying that some patches (Night Shift Patch, for example) were overwritten by the update. Just simply reinstall them.
  14. Enjoy.
========================================

I've following the procedure outlined about to update a macpro3,1 from 15H2 to 15H1519
and failing miserably. i've got USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3 installed onto my USB stick.

at what step above should i be booting USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3 (and which option should be
chosen inside USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3)?

i've successful gotten Security Update 2021-007 installed onto my macbookpro8,2 but no success on the macpro3,1

do i boot to the USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3 at step 9 (and select the MacOS installer) or before that step?

Before starting have both USB plugs inserted . . . . . . . When the update installer reboots after about 15% progress, option key into the USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3, you will quickly see a list. If the macOS installer is visible, the first portion of the installer is complete, use the arrow keys to select the macOS installer from the list, RETURN . . . . . the update install proceeds as normal into the option key boot into the dosdude1 patcher to complete. After the Mac successfully starts into the updated macOS build - MRT will be out-of-date also the Patch Updater in the /Utilities ƒ may need attention.

The needed Catalina Patcher USB is the one from Dosdude1?

Re: Clean reinstall of Catalina 10.15.7 (19H2). Hung (beachball) on Software update after launching "CatalinaOTAswfix" following instructions as I have done numerous times before I went on to Big Sur for a spin. (I came back from Big Sur with complete SSD erase, etc. migrating just data and setting). I have tried deleting as mentioned in a few posts around the net but result remains a hung system preferences software update (wether I launch OTAswfox or software update directly).

1638924403384.png

All other system preferences work fine. Trying to update to security 2021-008 and then on to 15H1519.. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Update 12/9/21
Sorted out above problem by only migrating my Data and not "settings" from my time machine backup of Big Sur. All is good no hangs when accessing System preference/Software update. However what I am getting is an "infinite looping successful software security updates of 2007 and 2008". Once updated with one security update then shows another update available indicating the prior security update... strange. Both show in About Mac/system info/installations as having been successfully installed but impossible to upgrade to latest beta from 15H2 to 15H1519. Never came across this during Catalina (updates or betas) prior to my install to Big Sur. Most likely user error in otafix but what, I fail to see. Any suggestions? Thanks much in advance.

So, I have this issue now with iMessage where someone has sent me a video in iMessage that they shot on their iPhone and when I try and watch the video the screen immediately goes black and I'm back at the Catalina sign in screen. I've tried re-applying the patches and double checking that SIP is disabled.

Again, I've got a Late 2009 iMac i7 with stock video card / non-Metal.

Everything is fine, so long as I don't launch iMessage. As soon as I launch it, BOOM! I get the black screen and I'm back at the Catalina sign in prompt.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do?

I'm on a Macbook 8,1, 19H1519, DosDude1 patcher. I am experiencing the same thing that the person above writes. When I launch imessage, my screen goes black, and I get sent to the login screen. Is there a fix for this?

Reporting successful update to 19H1615 on MBP4,1 17" (Early 2008). Seems a little slower overall since 19H1612. Safari takes about 5-10 sec. to get locked and loaded.

Hi @Davidoldmac, @K two posted a message to the "HowTo" for installing security updates:
19H1519 is the current release build for Catalina. Make certain the CatalinaOTAswfix in use comes from here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-10-15-catalina-on-unsupported-macs.2183772/post-28320558

Read the entire page, the file is at the very end.

I wish you success! :)

I. also have had this in past. what has worked for me as a work around is to delete video in iMessage on iPhone (or iPad) with iCloud sync on. Once the offending video deleted, iMessage was stable anew. Hopes this helps though I realize doesn't resolve the issue. Might have to do with disabled GPU and/or non-metal on 8,2?

Hi all,
is any of you able to "understand" the crash log I'm enclosing here?
I just did a fresh installation of @dosdude1 Catalina on a MacPro 3.1 and my main app still crashes when launching it. The crash file that appear after the crash is the text file I'm enclosing here.
Maybe someone could give me an idea about what is failing.

All the things on the run perfectly, "just" my main software don't want to go on. It is curious to see that previous version of Cubase (v10.5) it works... it's just the latest upgrade (v11).

Thank you very much in advance.

This is one way.
You can also try to create a 30GB temp. partitionen your SSD to hold a new temp. High Sierra installation. But I guess replacing the SSD with an HHD causes less work and trouble.
Now I tried the partition method on my 9,1 (installed 19H2, updated to 19H15) on a partition which I'll keep to the end of support of Catalina. But unfortunately nothing happens to my firmware (EFI version 421... should be 424; SMC-version is 2.1f173 should be 2.1f175). Do you have any idea?

There have been reports a firmware upgrade may only work on original Apple HHD/SSD within the some Macs. Have no other idea than retry. As I said: Some of my iMacs were really reluctant to accept the latest upgrade but at the very end I got them all (except a single Late iMac 2009 test system on my desk, but I did not really try hard).

You may search outside this thread, this is not a new problem and not linked to run an unsupported macOS version.
