Dangit. Count me in as another who shouldn't have updated this go-round. MacPro 3,1. Catalina. Metal Graphics Card. All was stable prior to the update. Now Chrome browser has issues opening and Graphics card won't display, so I had to swap out with factory graphics card. That causes issues with some apps which rely on metal for properly displaying objects. Urgh...

Same launching issue for Brave browser, as well.
I've only 3-4 3rd party Apps that don't launch. Found (in my case) temporarily switching WiFi off whilst launching works. I never really use Chrome, but only just again today and it launched by doing just that. FF and Safari appear unaffected.

Since the latest security update for Catalina, my ROM-patched Mac Pro 3.1 no longer boots directly from the internal APFS-formatted SSD, but from an EFI partition.

How can I fix this? An NVRAM reset or switching the boot drive in System Preferences did not bring success.

Thanks in advance for helpful hints!

I’m not sure why that would occur... The only major change from previous versions is the utilization of QuartzCore.framework from Mojave, which improves performance, specifically restores hardware acceleration in browsers. I’ll have to test it myself and see if I can replicate it.
Hey dos dude, first of all i wanna thank you for your unbelievable works. It helps to this world more thank you think.
I am a apple Mac product collector and i upgrade my all the macbooks, imac, pros, airs and mac minis from 2008 models to 2011 with your patchers.

Trust me i have run all the mac products from 2008 to 2011 with your patchers.

However, there was a problem we got after you update 1.4.1 catalina patcher with library validation) microsoft office and some of software got crash after this update.
Finally i have figured out to resolve this problem and use all the softwares with catalina patcher. But i have to downgrade my all old macs to catalina patcher 1.4.0

I think you already know this issue about mac microsoft office crash.
By the way it will be a great help to the world if you can give us a final patcher update for resolve these issues.
Because you know, there are many students use your old macs with your patcher and I believe they cannot use Microsoft office with your catalina patcher.

If you want to contact me for the more information about this issues and how i resolve that please send me a email to
cmwapple2020@gmail.com

We believe, You are a amazing individual in this world. Keep it up your good works mate.

Is it possible to download only the MacOS Catalina patcher post install file on, which could be added on to a flash drive to install and run on my Mac that won’t boot past the apple logo since the update? I only have a windows pc I can use, but not sure how to create the entire bootable Catalina patcher. Thanks

Try to run macOS in a VM in order to use macOS software like the patcher on the Windows PC. Have fun installing it. You should get a cheap (external) 2.5 HDD (or simply use a USB<->SATA connector cable ) to have always a supported macOS bootable and usable as fall back.

Sorry let me clarify. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with macOS Catalina installed using the Patcher that won’t boot past the apple screen after the update and a windows pc. I was wondering if there is a stand alone “macOS Cat Patcher Post Install File” I can download using my windows pc, put on my flash drive and use it to boot my Mac, instead of downloading the whole 7gb patcher

I’m not sure how to create the whole bootable Catalina patcher on a flash drive using a windows pc

I too had problems with recent patches, but following on your advice:

I've still a bootable copy of my last supported OS (ElCapitan) on a 2,5" HDD, which I can fit into CD drive bay. Short of a SSD, any way to then stop that drive from auto mounting after sleep mode/ restart? Realise I can just unmount it but main disk is already an SSD and wondering if there's a way to prevent it spinning up and for me to mount it manually in disk utility on demand.

Anyone had luck activating Safari (on 15.6.1) extensions like the Ad/ Tracker Blocker 'WIPR'? Alert window prevents it and the Dev already states here it could happen with unsupported OS (10.15.7). I've already tried activating the ext. in safe mode and resetting the smc. Accidentally unticked my existing extension 'Better' and now off course the same alert is issued.

Edit: this alert appears to not be just limited to those Apps mentioned. I've tried installing other extensions via App Store since and exactly the same thing occurs.

Beginn to read the instructions on the OCLP site and in the very first post of the Big Sur or Monterey thread carefully. It's important to follow them step by step. Good luck!
Yesterday I created the USB installer for Big Sur with OCLP. The installtion went relatively flawless and the system appears to be stable and running smoth! :)

Congrats! And yes, I still think Big Sur is the best choice for the MBP 8,1. I've just reverted mine to Big Sur.
I'm surprised. I also have a MBP 8,1 and I've been told to forget about Big Sur and just go with Catalina.
Though others say that Mojave is as high as you should push this machine.
I upgraded RAM and SSD. What do you think? Which version?

Advantage: Another year of security updates and a nice OS. Speed is not really an issue for me with graphics acceleration working.
Disadvantages: You need to get hold of older versions of Keynote, iMovie etc., which don't work properly. Photos has some limitations. And Word doesn't show selected text, if you use a version newer than 16.49.

I was quite satisfied, when I had this configuration in daily use.

Hello all,

it looks like Catalina will not get any more security updates. For me this was a reason to upgrade my good old Mac Pro 3.1 now to Monterey.

So I would like to thank you very much in this thread for your support in the past with many problems. I appreciate it very much.

As you can see in my signature, the upgrade was successful. I now have an up-to-date Mac with Airdrop, Handoff, Continuity – and even Universal Control!

To give something back, I'd like to briefly describe to other Mac Pro 3.1 owners how I did it.

The Mac Pro still had the original Bluetooth module and an older Atheros WiFi card (this one could still do Airdrop in Mojave), both components were installed in the designated places on the motherboard. Airdrop, Handoff and Continuity never worked in Catalina and there were warnings for kernel panics if you tried to upgrade to Big Sur or Monterey with these components.

These modules should therefore be removed for an upgrade to Big Sur or Monterey. So how could Wifi and Bluetooth be replaced with more modern components?

Through a little research, I discovered the Fenvi FV-T919 PCIe card with native Airport WiFi support and a BT 4.0 chipset.

The Bluetooth module on the card needs its own power supply, unfortunately I didn't find a connector for it on the Mac's motherboard. But I had an idea: Since I knew that there are PCIe cards with external and internal USB 3 ports, this was an option and worth a try.

The card I'm using now is called Inateck RedComets U23 USB 3.2 Gen 2 PCIe Card with 1 USB-C & 4 USB-A Ports.

Connected the Bluetooth power cable of the Fenvi card with a USB 9 Pin Internal Motherboard Male Header to USB Type A Adaptor cable (just a sample link, you can get this kind of cable at many other places).

And lo and behold, this is how Airdrop, Handoff, Continuity already worked in Catalina.

Now for the software upgrade:

This was done (of course!) with the OpenCore Legacy Patcher.

First I tried a clean install of Monterey and migrating the rest of the data from another boot volume. However, that didn't work, so I then simply upgraded an existing Catalina installation to Monterey.

Now I'm sitting here feeling like I just bought a new Mac! So far, everything works just fine, except for the sleep mode (the Mac only goes to sleep for a short time and then doesn't wake up properly - only a reboot helps then ...), but hopefully there's a fix for that somewhere.

I hope it is helpful for one or the other who is facing a similar situation. 🤞

@coasterOneEightThree I'm facing similar and other issues with my Cat patch and considering OCLP Monterey (if recommended) for my C2D 5,3 MBP. I'm assuming it requires a complete reinstall from last supported OS and data to be migrated from external? Or how did you go about it?

My first attempt was a clean install of Monterey followed by migration of data from the previously used drive. But the migration did not work, there was a crash during the transfer process, so the result was incomplete.

My second attempt, on the other hand, was successful. I simply upgraded a complete bootable backup from the previously used Catalina installation directly to Monterey via the OCLP. After this everything was in place.

The Mac looked like it did before, only with an up-to-date OS ...

Hi, have been looking back through this thread, but can't find anything conclusive to solve apps not opening after upgrade/patch from High Sierra (native) to Catalina (patched)
I have gone back and run post install patches through recovery (did seem to complete but gave error (1))
Main apps not working are MS Office and Chrome
Model: iMac10,1, BootROM 215.0.0.0.0, 2 processors, Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz, 8 GB, SMC 1.52f9
Graphics: kHW_NVidiaGeForce9400Item, NVIDIA GeForce 9400, 256 MB

System Integrity Protection: disabled

Crashed Thread: 0

Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (Code Signature Invalid)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000
Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

Any advice on where to go next?

Thanks for the feedback. I've not had a stable bootable backup using SD, quite varied disk file size. So on your 2nd run, can you confirm that own user data remained untouched after install? It's my only machine so have to do that extra research all HW remains supported also.

Dosdude1 suggests to immediately restart the app after crashing. Works for me.

But you can also do the following for each app that acts up:
sudo xattr -lr /Applications/coconutBattery.app
Enter your password.
Then copy and paste this command:
sudo xattr -cr /Applications/coconutBattery.app
Finally copy and paste this command:
sudo codesign -f -s - /Applications/coconutBattery.app
I remebered that makra had this workaround. Previously I would temporarily turn WiFi of to successfully open affected Apps. Just tried this very example on coconut and it works!

Next I'll try the 2016 Office suite. @makra could you please confirm that the exact capitalized and/ or spacing of App name can me taken as seen in App Folder. i.e. Microsoft Word.app The space b/w Microsoft and Word has to be maintained, both words must remain capitalised when issueing this command in Terminal?

Apps with a space in their name are written like in this example:
sudo xattr -lr /Applications/Microsoft\ Word.app

Thank you, worked a treat for Office2016 Suite. Well, unfortunately I also did this to 1Password6 App (Agile Bits purchase) and lost all connectivity to the essential 1Password mini. Effectively without this, 1Password6 won't open. Guessing there's now no way of rolling this back in Terminal. Any advice on this?

Edit: so whilst 1Password6 tries to verify its connection with 1Password mini, I can quickly enter my password into the mini on the taskbar. It remains there:

1. Whilst the alert window is not quit.
2. As long as 1Password6 App is not quit.
3. Mini in taskbar functions only as 'read-only' if 1. and 2. are true.
4. FF 1P6 Ext works, again, as long as 1. and 2. are true.

Hi! I have a purely user question. I have Macbook 5.1 late 2008 aluminum. An old studio machine for recording music. Now copes with all tasks in Logic Pro x. It runs El capitan, and many modern plugins require a more modern system. How stable will my Mac be in professional programs like Logic Pro on Catalina? Or is it better to stay on El Capitan? Thank you!
