imac 2011:
in beta 3: when I start a speed test, the LAN network crashes when I upload it (I then no longer have an internet / network), I have to plug in and unplug the cable so that it works again. someone an idea?

I just noticed that apple is releasing some beta 4 of their products, so I decided to release my beta BigSurOTAswufix (a bit different from CatalinaOTAswufix) , that is even ready to fix a BigSur OTA update but currently can only download a next beta BigSur full Installer from the Software Update prefpane (already tested from BigSur beta 2 for beta 3), it should work from a sealed system with snapshot booting too.

Since I won't release more InstallAssistant pkg links, you can download directly a full installer using this attached (when beta 4 is released).

If apple decides to allow the OTA updates from virtual machines, then this OTA fix should work.

But currently use it only with "Sofware Update fix" button.

big-sur-micropatcher v0.18 Update
v0.0.18
@barrykn barrykn released this 2 hours ago
  • patch-kexts.sh works from within a running Big Sur installation, finally! Rebooting from the patched installer USB should no longer be necessary (but will still work and has still been tested more thoroughly). For now, unpatch-kexts.sh still requires booting from the installer USB.
  • micropatcher.sh is now a little more robust; under some circumstances, if it runs into permissions problems, it will restart the patching process with sudo.
  • Many updates to the README. In particular, compatibility information is more up-to-date.

This will be a game changer jackluke. Thanks so much. Is there something like this for Mojave?

For Mojave AFAIK if you have an APFS installation, software updates should work without patches on unsupported Mac or maybe is required too @Czo VMMFaker.dylib , but after you need to apply post install patches.

Anyway for allowing OTA updates on unsupported Mac a method that will work is through OpenCore spoofing to BigSur supported Mac , but currently I prefer to advise VMM spoofing because this doesn't imply firmware updates .

@Jackdude Done: 12.88 GB... Is Bs Beta 4? I'm updating from BS beta 1 on External disk on Mac mini 2010

For beta 4 you need to wait that apple officially release it, otherwise it's the beta 3 in downloading, I guess they will change again the download size I expect different from 12.88 GB , but you could notice it later.

So for now don't download it because almost surely it's still the beta 3.

Instead for those that are already on beta 3 using that BigSurOTAswufix.app will show only beta 4 full installer when it's available from apple.

ok, tell us when it will be available, I will restart downloading. I'm using 4G but until march 8 I have a Vodafone promotion of infinite GB availables (DL limited to 10 mbps) The old installer was 12.92 GB on my info. (image attached) ...Then I patch & download it also from iMac 2013 Beta 3. 21:41 in Italy now, I have all the night to download from both machines.

EDIT: You were right. BS Beta 3 says it is still updated, I will retry later.

I just updated the "BigSur BaseSystem fix" for any stock createinstallmedia USB BigSur Installer , now this script should work from any macOS (doesn't require more an already BigSur installed), first requirement is that you get an "Install macOS Big Sur Beta.app" (12,88 gb) making a stock apple USB BigSur installer with this method:

Code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/ createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/YourUSBLabel

then apply first the "BigSur BaseSystem legacy usb fix" , after unplug and plug again your USB drive and apply the "BigSur BaseSystem legacy usb fix2" .

After made you can boot from a non-APFS or legacy USB Mac the USB BigSur Installer from apple startup manager, and to install it, open an Utilities terminal and type:

/Volumes/I*/H*

then close, and open the "Install macOS" (little circle BigSur icon) directly from the Utilities recovery environment and it should install on eligible volumes.

Currently you can only install on internal SATA disk with a non-APFS or legacy USB Mac (while recent USB Mac can install also on external USB disk), but the advantage is that you can update a previous BigSur Installation and also having an USB BigSur Installer (working on legacy USB Mac) you can use the ASentientBot fix apfs_systemsnapshot and diskutil apfs deleteSnapshot to fix "sudo mount -uw /" (or instead the weird method to skip the stage3 installer).

For non-APFS or legacy USB Mac to boot BigSur desktop after installation you could use this: USBOpenCoreAPFSloader3b.app.zip

making it with the option "Near an USB device without erasing" and selecting the USB BigSur Installer label as target.

edit:
From my earlier tests you can use a previous /BaseSystem/BaseSystem.dmg even to boot a recent BigSur "Install macOS.app", so I'd advise to keep a copy of the patched BaseSystem.dmg (size 840 MB) that you can reuse.

Because apple with BigSur uses "two BaseSystem.dmg" (three considering the APFS Recovery), the second one is unpackaged from SharedSupport.dmg during the stage1 installer and copied here /Volumes/YourBigSurLabel Data/macOS Install Data/ to start the stage2 installer (that's why non-APFS or legacy USB Mac can only install it on internal SATA disk).
On MBP5,2 (a mid 2009 legacy USB mac), made a USB BS installer with createinstallmedia and your new fix+fix2. Did that running 10.15.6.
The result boots well and after Hax the installer shows the correct disks.
Didn‘t start the installation as I did this earlier today with the USB BS installer made with the previous version of fix/fix2. I confirm that it installed beta3 over beta3 (still nontrivial), preserving all settings, user data etc. Applied the necessary prelinkedkernel fix etc afterwards of course.

Thanks jackluke! Looking forward to repeat that with beta4, using also your BS software update fix from the post further below.

The BigSurOTAswufix allows to download a full installer from a previous beta 2 (probably because apple labelled it 10.16) but apparently not from beta 3 (maybe with some modification of SystemVersion could work), so here is a beta 4 link (12,3 GB): http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down...m7ounuabziajlktg8nhoptis/InstallAssistant.pkg
thanks bro.

Sealed vs unsealed probably makes no difference here. Beta 2 vs 3 is more likely to be the difference.

The error message seems to have the instructions for fixing the problem, as far as I can tell. If those instructions don't work for some reason, that's a second problem (and if you can describe that problem in more detail, either I or someone else here might be able to help).

I do have a USB tablet that maybe I should test at some point, but it's some off brand and not Wacom, and that message sounds to me like the problem is specific to Wacom software.

thanks, I found a solution adding some files manually and finally works!!

This could be a bug in my patcher. I probably won't have a chance to investigate this today, but hopefully tomorrow... (It's possible that the bug won't happen with beta 4 by the way. Or Ethernet on 2011 Macs with beta 4 might not work at all until I update my patcher. Until I make a beta 4 USB and try things out myself -- I don't know if that will be today or tomorrow -- I can't be sure what will happen.)

and I try to creating installer beta 4 have error like picture
Just ignore that error (a similar one has been happening in the main installer since beta 1 and it doesn't affect anything).

In your case, you might need to install Catalina 10.15.6 for the sole purpose of using it to choose Big Sur in Startup Disk. I don't know for sure that this will work, but it's the easiest thing to try that I can think of. Edit: I just tested this and actually it doesn't work -- even 10.15.6 has the same bug as Mojave, unfortunately.
