Hi everybody,
I'm a newbie here. Thanks to Barry and the others, I was able to install Big Sur on my Mac Mini 2011 using the 0.3.1 micropatcher (external SSD on USB 2)
It seems to work ok (including Wifi), but I'm a bit disappointed by the overall responsiveness of the system. It seems so sluggish.
I guess that is because of the HD3000 non-metal GPU. Disabling the animations and the transparency is better but it's not usable as a day to day real production computer. And that is without talking of the constant full speed fan noise.
I think it is time for my venerable Mini to get a much deserved retirement.
Looking forward for the ARM units...

Welcome

Spotlight might take a while to settle down.
Fan shouldn't run full speed, look into your processes in Activity Monitor, see if there's a process with high CPU load.
NVRAM is only 512 MB, not a lot, it's 1536 MB on my 2012 Mac Mini.
Ask if other 2011 MM Users have the same issue.
Pretty positive your MM does not support Metal, that's another problem.(Actually that's what you just said)
These Mac Mini's are actually really good machines, the only setback is the Intel Graphic cards.

Hmmm. I can still see him as the original poster of the first message, and it appears he can still be reached via a private message. It's true it's been a long time since he wrote last, but perhaps he's doing research on his own as time allows.
True!..That would be so cool if he if he checks in this week!..not rushing him in any way of course.Gm should be out any day.

Last beta was actually a breeze to install after some initial problems, it won't get that much easier, just a bit of automation, like checking which mac it is installed to for running the right scripts.

Notes:
  • Patching has to be done from the booted BigSur using the terminal command line. There is a call/hack to the system_profiler to get info about the installed GPU.
  • Currently I did only a single tests with the 2009/2010 iMacs. The micro patched Apple installer switches off the machine after a few seconds.
  • I could not make the installer work directly on the iMacs having a metal AMD Polaris based GPU. The lack of the EFI boot screen makes it nearly impossible to to this. Possibly the USBopencore may work to circumvent this problem.
Hello,
do you have idea that is it possible to change GPU (iMac 10,1 C2D) from HD 4670 to Metal GPU?

thanks!

I disagree, people installing this should know the basics.
Since there's disagreement about whether this change to step 15 would be good, and I haven't seen anyone have case sensitivity problems in the complaints I've gotten via GitHub, etc. (yes I saw lots of command problems, but none of it involved case sensitivity) I think I won't make this change for now. I can always make the change later if it turns out I'm wrong about this.

Hello mate,

I noted that you're Brazilian too, what's the steps that you did use to upgrade your BS??
If you want (I believe that is better), please send me a DM here and we talk in private to solved this.

I've a MacBook Pro 9,1 (Mid 2012 no retina) and I'm in Beta 6 cause the others are Delta and I can't upgrade with @Barry K. Nathan patcher.

Beta 9 also has a full installer, it just came out a day after the delta update.

Installing BS B9 (on the original internal HD) on iMac 21 late 2013 (iMac14.1) exactly as succesfully done for Beta 3, two months ago: only @ASentientBot hax3 patch (really simple installer hack) , starting the installer directly from Catalina 10.15.7 without createinstaller on USB or any kext patcher, to verify if also this way it stucks at languange configuration. @jackluke @Barry K. Nathan

EDIT: Succesfully installed in 45 minutes! Graphic acceleration, WIFI, USB, internal audio, microphone, SIRI all working fast and reliable and it is installed on the very slow internal HD. It seems that Apple only denied the installation for PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE ???

Maybe you missed it, but the Language Chooser problem was a bug in the micropatcher and I fixed it in v0.3.1.

Please can somebody help me? I had a perfect working big sur on my iMac and, without thinking, I stupidly reset the PRAM with Ctrl-Alt-P-R! Now nothing works anymore and I have a blank screen at startup. I tried to re-apply set-bars.sh from the USB key but it doesn’t work... I really need your help

You're not running Bootcamp, by any chance? After playing around with all this, my Bootcamp partition will no longer boot and is stuck at a blank screen, which gives way after a long time to a 'no bootable media' message. So just in case it's that, wait for that message, then force shut down, then boot holding down the option key, and you're back into dealing with things normally, at least. (Though still with a stuffed Bootcamp partition :-/ .)

Damn apple are pushing OSs as they are pushing IOSs they just want to force people to upgrade against their well. I have a MacBook Pro 2012 with 1TB ssd and 16 gigs of Ram , been working great with Catalina and its a monster machine that can run another good 3 years.

I've got a similar setup to you, and Big Sur is actually running really smoothly on it. That said, you're one of the people that Apple aren't pushing this new update on to! Like @treee111 said, why not just stick to Catalina if you want to? But then again ... yes ... the newest versions of all the apps we use will probably have stopped working with Catalina by the end of three years - so I guess we should just be glad we've got machines which seem able to run Big Sur smoothly!

I have a 21.5 inch late 2013 iMac and just completed the install following Barry's instructions using the Micropatcher 0.3.1 and it went exactly as described! No issues installing and no issue with the language chooser menu.

Funnily enough, I had tried it last night before Barry released version 0.3.1 and I ran across the issue with the forbidden sign after I tried to start from the USB installer, but that was because I might not have read the instructions about booting from the 'EFI Boot' partition in the USB installer first. I gave up after a few attempts and went to bed. Glad I didn't try to start ALL over again and waited for the new version of the Micropatcher to be released!

Big thank you to Barry for all your hard work!

You have to startup from the USB installer again, next choose Terminal from the Menu then type

/Volumes/Image\ Volume/patch-kexts.sh /Volumes/XXX

XXX is the name of your normal Big Sur disk

For me that would be

/Volumes/Image\ Volume/patch-kexts.sh /Volumes/SSD

Then restart.

I'm having App Store problems.
I can log in but some downloaded apps show up as "Corrupted."
Copying the app and validating them as purchased with credentials ends up with a repeating dialog.
Logging our, rebooting, and logging in has not solved the issue.
