Hello to all,

Successful instalation of Big Sur Dev. Beta 9 on 13,2 iMac 27" using BarryKN's micropatcher 0.3.2.

I did have to reboot into BigSur USB installer, after original installation, and apply "patch-kexts.sh" to activate WiFi.
I was reminded of this WiFi-activation procedure by justperry's post#4702. Thank you.

Thereafter, all functions are available and system remains stable.

My MacBook Pro 5,2 is still on Big Sur Beta Dev. 4 and, while functional, not fully usable due to lack of GPU acceleration.
I will try update to latest BigSur when GM becomes availabe.

Hope this may be of help.

Thank you to everyone involved in this endeavor; the principals who make this possible, are well known to about all utilizing this thread.

Hi!

Currently not with the cards we have listed on the thread you find in my signature below. Check out the first post there, the C2D systems are incompatible.

Additionally I have not been able to boot an installer on a more recent 11,x system. Only the 12,x systems are working so far. May be @jackluke and other find a way to create a bootable installer. The last experiment here ended with a forbidden sign, which is slightly better than the shutdown before :)
Thanks Bro,

So I need to keep my iMac10,1 in Cat better..:)

hi
any luck on MacBook Pro 6,2 2010 15" model to install macOS Big Sur?

thanks
This according to BarryKN's README: [Doesn't look promising!]
"Incompatible Mac models:
  • 2010 15"/17" MacBook Pro, 2010 iMac: These are crashing in AppleACPICPU.kext during boot. Someone needs to create a patch to fix it, or these Macs will not be running Big Sur."

One little update. I've switched to fully dGPU mode and animations are back to Catalina levels of smoothness. Apparently Intel Graphics 4000 are too slow for Big Sur's UI and this is probably one of the reasons they've dropped support from it (weird though they still include the drivers for this GPU)
What you are saying is correct for Retina Macbooks. It isn´t correct for non Retina Macbooks. Herre the graphics are quite faster than on Catalina.

hi
any luck on MacBook Pro 8,1 2011 13"
Dual-Core Intel Core i5 2,3 GHz
model to install macOS Big Sur?

Installing BS is possible on this machine. Until DP4 it was possible to use @jackluke´s patchers to get WIFI working. Since DP5 or DP6 these aren´t working anymore. Also if you replace the WIFI card to the card of a MID 20112 MBP you won´t get it working. This Sandy Bridge machine will not be usable for the graphics (INTEL HD 3000) has no acceleration. I have been rolling back to Catalina and using Continuity activation tool I got a fully working WIFI, Airdrop and Handoff. For my experience I´ld say the most machines earlier than 2012 are not usable with BS. There are some exclusions after upgrading WIFI and graphics (have a look to @Ausdauersportler posts).

I been away after Beta6 and now try to catchup reading...
First big thank you jackluke for creating the USBOpencore4S1.
I used jakeluke USBOpencore4s1 to update my cMP mid 2012 BS Beta6 to Beta9.

https://forums.macrumors.com/thread....2242172/page-179?post=28952250#post-28952250

  1. Boot with Option/alt key hold down via OpenCoreAPFSLoader4s1 USB and choose your drive.
  2. Run the software update, the package Beta9 is 3.82 GB. This will take awhile to preparing/installing.
  3. Again boot with Option/alt key hold down via OpenCoreAPFSLoader4s1 USB and choose 'macOS Installer’.
  4. If normal boot grey screen with prohibited sign, you need to boot in Recovery Terminal (command+R) => nvram boot-args="-no_compat_check”. If unable you may use Cat or Big Sur USB installer.
  5. Again boot with Option/alt key hold down via OpenCoreAPFSLoader4s1 USB and choose 'macOS Installer’.
  6. Now wait for software update finished.
  7. Unable to boot without OpenCoreAPFSLoader4s1 USB. You must reboot with OpenCoreAPFSLoader4s1 USB, and follow jakeluke commands at link below.

Trying to boot the Big Sur installer on iMac 11,x systems results in an early kernel panic with the following kexts in the backtrace (had to capture this using high speed camera mode):
Code:
com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily
com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform
   dependency: com.apple.driver.AppleSMC
   dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily
   dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily
So I guess one should try to use some kexts from Catalina instead - but that would require being able to build a different kernel collection (and I only have that HP Laptop with Penryn CPU as other machine that maybe could boot into Big Sur - but it doesn't have any EFI...).
Do you happen to know a way how achieve this?
Or maybe it's just an ACPI/DSDT related problem one could fix using OpenCore?

This is a known issue since BigSur beta 1 kernel, where some Intel architecture as Clarkdale i3 , Arrandale i5 i7 (and maybe others) can't boot the BigSur kernel (its BaseSystem crash at early booting), I also noticed that kp is not stored in any log, so only through an high speed camera, I already tried many kext swapping from Catalina (on Arrandale Mac), I guess the culprit are not the kext but the kernel, this fix require very advanced skills that I don't have.

I don't exclude that an ACPI/DSDT patch through OpenCore could fix, but I guess this requires a binary disassemble of Catalina kernel and comparing with BigSur one, I doubt any *ACPI* Catalina kext replacement will work on BigSur .

About Legacy USB and non-APFS Mac BigSur installer or recovery, I noticed that apple from beta 9 is seriously intentioned to remove the Extensions (kext), now the beta 9 BaseSystem.dmg size is 661 MB (on beta 4 was 840 MB , beta 8 was 750 MB ), so they have reduced even more the BaseSystem.dmg, but I just made an updated BaseSystem Legacy USB fix for beta 9 , moreover it adds the Wifi (so you can use Safari) on BigSur recovery installer and sound (press CMD+F5 to enable it on recovery).

First requirement is that from any macOS Recovery terminal at least set csrutil disable

Then get an "Install macOS Big Sur Beta.app" (currently beta 9 InstallAssistant.pkg) making a stock apple USB BigSur installer with this method:
Code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/ createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/YourUSBLabel

then apply the "BigSur BaseSystem b9 legacy usb fix" , after unplug and plug again your USB drive and apply the "BigSur BaseSystem b9 legacy usb fix2".

After made you can boot from a Penryn Core2Duo non-APFS or legacy USB Mac the USB BigSur Installer from apple startup manager or USBopencore, then upgrade or install it on BigSur unsupported Mac, simply typing from Recovery Utilities terminal this: /V*/I*/H*

(that is abbreviation for /Volumes/Image\ Volume/Hax3.sh based on ASentientBot Hax3.dylib)

It should work on any BigSur capable Mac but is aimed to Legacy USB and non-APFS Penryn Core2Duo, to continue stage2 installer or to boot after installation you need a non spoof version of USBOpenCoreAPFSloader4s1.zip (to detect the "macOS Installer") and for Legacy USB to use CMD+S and exit (this check is required to have responsive usb input devices and concurrently a BigSur USB external installation).

Instead for other recent USB Mac this BaseSystem fix should work without efforts and could be also combined with Micropatcher.

Starting now the BS B9 installation on Mac mini 2010... I will report all steps :)

Hello,

What method did you use for installation? Using wifi patch?

Here in a vanilla installation (USBOpenCoreAPFSloader4s), everything is working perfectly.

USB 2.0 ports of our Mac Pro 2010 are not plug and play anymore. Whatever is plugged during boot works. But as soon as it is disconnected or something newly connected, it doesn't enumerate on USB bus anymore.
Does anyone else observe such behaviour?
First seen on Beta 5, still the same after upgrade to Beta 9.
On the other hand, the PCIe USB 3 addon card works fine. Just the built-in USB 2.0 ports do this.
EDIT: USB 2.0 hub (DLINK DUB-H7) enumerates fine, so only the end devices fail here.

Installing BS B9 (on the original internal HD) on iMac 21 late 2013 (iMac14.1) exactly as succesfully done for Beta 3, two months ago: only @ASentientBot hax3 patch (really simple installer hack) , starting the installer directly from Catalina 10.15.7 without createinstaller on USB or any kext patcher, to verify if also this way it stucks at languange configuration. @jackluke @Barry K. Nathan

EDIT: Succesfully installed in 45 minutes! Graphic acceleration, WIFI, USB, internal audio, microphone, SIRI all working fast and reliable and it is installed on the very slow internal HD. It seems that Apple only denied the installation for PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE ???

I haven't seen many issues with Late 2013 iMac's, if any issues at all. I ended up biting the bullet and erased by beta 3 partition and attempted to update my main drive from Catalina to BS beta 9 using the same method as above. For what its worth, it successfully updated my Catalina to BS beta 9 without a hitch. Everything has been working as if it was meant to be. Still looking through everything and will report any issues if any found. For what it's worth, figured I'd give my experience with BS beta 9 update.

Mine is perfect, only a bit slow due to the infamous internal hardisk.
I will install the final over my Beta 3 still working fine on external USB 3.0 SSD, keeping all programs already installed :)
