Well, it's not so bad.
It looks amazing, but it probably has a lot of bugs. I thought it would've been macOS Ventura.
I am trying to create a bootable BS installer for my MBP 7,1 (2010) – but all the instructions are very complicated

Try using my script (https://github.com/4ndv/big-sur-plz), it injects dylib only for InstallAssistant, not system-wide

Dude, thanks so much for your script.
I've a MacBook Pro Mid 2012 i5 HD4000, so I've almost sure that's work with me, but I need so much WiFi 😥
I see @highvoltage12v does WiFi works with 2012 mid. Try to figure out with him if you can to add in your script the steps, Who knows work it.

But the same way, thanks, my MBP could be save with Big Sur 😀😀

For those unable to mount root volume as writable - this is likely because like me, your system is booting off a snapshot instead of the live volume. To bypass this, try the steps I wrote here: https://egpu.io/forums/postid/82119/

Basically the process to modify root volume is:
  1. Disable Authenticated Root (ART)
  2. Mount "live" volume as writable.
  3. Modify volume as needed.
  4. Create a system snapshot and tag it.
  5. Reboot.
On next boot, the system will boot off the new (modified) snapshot. This worked for me when I added a text file to the root volume and checked snapshot volume post-reboot.

Note: I am running on a natively supported system [2014 15" MBP] and needed to modify the root volume for other purposes than running unsupported OSes.

All these methods seem to be the Install to Machine way, but what if someone wants to install BS onto a blank partition on their main (only) machine? Would they have to make a new Catalina partition just to install BS over it?

I think we have identical cards. Here is mine, sorry for russian language on this screenshots)) Only problem is internet recovery not work with this card, but it's a small problem.
Mines a custom built card, pulled from a 2015 MacBook Pro and modified to work in a Unibody MacBook, not sure if it'd be the same one in your Air. Subtle Design makes them in small batches every once in a while.

Here's more info on my card. This is running in a 2012 Unibody 15"

I think this is just for now. Maybe it will be easy after GM is out.

How did you get that to work. I have the same MacBook Pro. But it throws an error

If you haven't seen the post on rmc.ch/newsroom: I'm switching to Linux and won't develop a patcher this year. I also think this isn't a desktop OS.

That's disappointing. Which flavor? I recently switch an old Macbook Air that was just too slow on macOS to Manjaro. It's pretty cool.

Macs capable of being patched to run macOS Catalina properly and potentially can be patched to run macOS Big Sur:
- These Macs so far can boot Big Sur, but do not currently feature Wifi or graphical acceleration support. See FAQ for more information.

I have a machine that falls in this category. The part I don't get is if OpenGL is gone what is the strategy in patching? Putting OpenGL back or coming up with a Metal compatible video driver?

In my particular case, I have a Macmini 5,1 in a closet running Plex. Since I don't care about graphics acceleration or wifi does that mean I could upgrade it? Not sure there'd really be a point though huh?

Thanks again for all you do!

I found this on Github taken from macOS Big Sur then compare it to macOS Catalina Skyline.framework and you can see the changes and why it could be awhile before graphic acceleration working

BIErrorDomain error 3. Looked it up. Seems like the same error people get when try to install in VMware. Im running the installer on Catalina 10.15.4. and trying to install to ssd. but all hard drives are greyed out with that error

You’re not the only one. I’m trying to figure it out

I already installed it but restarting after the update gives mac boot error circle with slash.

any solution ?

AFAIK, that means you are going well. Now you need to set the "No compatibility check" in NVRAM. Easiest way would be to boot in previous macOS and in terminal, issue:

sudo nvram boot-args='-no_compat_check'

I'm not really sure if this step can be done in the OS Recovery terminal. For what I've read, should be done with the full system running, but I haven't tested it myself.

Once that's done, the Big Sur OS will be able to boot and continue installing.

Re-running the 'patch' scripts before I ran the installer fixed it for me. If that doesn't fix it, consult someone far smarter than me 😂
I’m just gonna reflash Catalina. And start fresh to see it that if that fixes anything

Cool, hopefully that won't take too long lol. I did make an error with what I said earlier. Make sure to install the InstallAssistant.pkg file FIRST, then run the scripts, then finally run the .app installer. Hopefully you have some luck 👍

Shouldn’t take long I have a 10.15 iso back up on a external drive. I will take care of it in the morning. I’ll let you know if I have any luck

Great, keep me posted! I've seen many others encounter this issue throughout the thread without a solution so hopefully this works for them too 🤞
