Before installing or updating BigSur on any unsupported Mac you should apply the ASentientBot Hax3 HaxLib.dylib installer fix also included in BaseSystem fix , you can apply it quickly from Installer Utilities menu or directly from main menu Hax3 fix (clicking on upper right finder menu) or even opening terminal and typing /V*/I*/H*

If you are not upgrading a previous BigSur it's advisable to erase first the container as APFS .

Yeah!!!!! That was it :) Finally, I am installing. Thank you so much. Your efforts and continued engagement with me to sort this out are very much appreciated.

Which particular OC config are you talking about?

This is irrelevant as long as you are not spoofing the board-id of a supported machine. ...
I am spoofing the board id of a supported machine! Using @jackluke's very, very useful OC builds to do so.

Btw as I understand it, OC was previously able to block firmware updates in such cases, but as per discussions on GitHub - see @jackluke's recent post about this - the OC developers have just had to update how this works, because of changes to how Apple do EFI firmware updates in Big Sur, and also (as per @jackluke's comments) whatever OC do now can't be completely failsafe against whatever Apple might do in future.

someone help me? I have successfully installed the Release Candidate, but when I try to patch for Wi-Fi I get this error. What am I doing wrong? in previous betas this command has worked well for me. It's a late 2012 iMac and micropatcher version 0.5.0.

Try this version maybe.
Big Sur (B11.01) on iMac 11,x and 12,x

Everybody with an iMac 11,x and new metal graphics card interested in trying Big Sur on an iMac please read this post to get an idea which OpenCore version to be used and how to patch...

Users of the 12,x do not need a special OC patch or better no OC at all to install, but I would strongly recommend all users of AMD cards using OC to spoof the iMacPro1,1 ID to change the config.plist during the installation process to avoid getting an unwanted firmware update. Just use an NVIDIA plist file or disable spoofing. As pointed out before the blocking of firmware upgrades through OC might not work at all.

To use the latest 0.5.0 micro patcher you have to put the attached zipped extension files into the payloads/kexts folder before patching the USB thumb drive in the downloaded micro patcher or after patching on the USB thumb drive in the kexts folder and use the attached version of the patch-kext.sh script.

Model detection is automated, patches are selected according to hardware found on the system (NVIDIA or AMD). User of NVIDIA K610M/K1100M/K2100M cards have to currently use the <icode>--useOC</icode> option. In this case no versions of BacklightFixup.kext, Whatevergreen.kext and Lilu.kext will be installed, these will be injected via OC. I cannot detect this special card type currently automatically. The same happens on all systems with AMD cards.

All users of 11,x iMacs will need OC all the time to boot the Big Sur. So I assume all the extensions just mentioned above will be injected there, too. Bottom line: You will need OC to use Big Sur! There is currently no way around it.

All this needs a deeper knowledge of the MacOS and the usage go Terminal command line. Who is not really familiar with this should stay away from this experiment.

Any questions?

Have fun!

Notes:

  1. Make the OC the standard boot object before starting the installer. It will come back there some times during the reboots.
  2. AMD cards are AMD Polaris cards and metal compatible
  3. NVIDIA cards are Kepler GPU based cards and metal compatible
  4. Installing Big Sur on an original iMac 11,x or 12,x with Apple branded ATI/AND Radeon 4xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx cards will be possible, the result barely usable. There is no graphics acceleration and there will be no for all times.

Fixed, I have unplugged a USB Wifi AC adapter and it has been installed. it had not happened to me in previous betas

Looks like hardware acceleration maybe possible on Mac OS Big Sur on non metal Mac hardware example MacBook Pro 7,1. 😁
I’m curious to see if replacing a bunch of files from the framework library, plus replacing any non metal related things from Mojave and Catalina can result in any proper transparency like blur effects. Even if it’s just like some items of the os like the dock or like a Catalina/ Big Sur OS Frankenstein is created. I can start with the top bar. Is anyone willing to tell me which things are related with the top menu bar and any files related with it. After that possibly start with replacing the finder with the old one from Catalina. I just need to know which files I would need to replace to even try. I might not get everything working but at least get at least partial acceleration. It would probably be more like Catalina but with the added benefit of three years of updates instead of two. I’m not an expert but I what to at least try so can anyone lead me in the right direction. I have some terminal experience and have Catalina installed on a separate partition to try to start copying files or start to try to modify some things. I plan on creating another one for Big Sur and trying this.

I have a 2012 MBP (model 9,2). Would it be worth it to get the third-party WiFi AC card available before installing Big Sur via the patcher? I don't care about AC, nor unlocking with my watch.

Subtle Design

Great great thread, can we get any sort of consensus since it appears Big Sur is almost upon us depending on models?

For example, I own a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15" Unibody - recommended that I go ahead with the process of installing Big Sur upon release or just wait it out?

It is always possible, the problem is it might be so difficult that it's near to impossible, it all depends on how hard *Apple tried to block it.

*Removed software.
There are so ingenious people, so knowledgeable about the difficult terrain, that they may find the narrow path to the goal of graphics acceleration on non-metal hardware.
This is so beneficial to many of us.
I am sure Apple has more strategic things to do than block usage of old hardware. They just streamline their product and keep it from getting ugly.

Would replacing files like from Catalina to Big Sur help. Example the menu bar items and the dock along which the framework files related with them help. Later on I can try to figure out about 2d catalyst apps on Big Sur/ Catalina hybrid.

Can anyone send me documentation on how Mac OS Catalina is constructed. Or even if it’s just earlier versions of Mac OS from the early days. Like how the finder works menu bars. Can quartz extreme still be utilized if so send me any proper documentation on the proprietary things that are core related with Hardware acceleration on Catalina.

Installed the version from the link above (http://swcdn.apple.com/content/down...wsbkkow1xxjqs3jsn2lidnhh/InstallAssistant.pkg) on my Mac Pro 5,1 - dual Xeon 5680 3.33mhz 32gb Metal compatible GPU with boot rom 144.0.0.0.0 that had been updated to Mojave Catalina via dosdude.

I used createinstallmedia to create the USB installer.

Patched the USB with micropatcher.sh from Barry K Nathan's v0.5.0 and install-setvars.sh patches.

Rebooted with the patched USB and Installed Big Sur 11.0.1 B2 RC to a new APFS formatted partition.

After the installation of the macOS Install Files on the new partition the computer reboots and try's to finish the install on the new partition but is stuck in a repeated reboot cycle.

After 5 re-boots I interrupted the reboot cycle and
Rebooted again to the patched USB and re-Installed Big Sur 11.0.1 B2 RC again to the new APFS formatted partition.
Same reboot cycle again.

What is the Fix?

if you really want to work with that, I recommend taking a look at the thread Mojave first.
ask our friend for help @pkouame he is familiar with the skylight (responsible for menu transparencies)

Start up in Verbose mode, see where it reboots.
I had this when I used Opencore once for installation of BS a few beta's ago, I intentionally deleted a snapshot, later on after reading a post here I got the idea to create a snapshot/bless the system, that did the trick.

Do you know how to reflash a bootrom on an iMac? Thank you
Hi, did you got any solution for your problem with the bootrom, because i've the same problem, today i read out the bootrom with my ch431a programmer, the result was nothing-- the bootrom was empty. I dont know is it possible to get a Bin file anywhere for reprogramming the bootrom, ..... i know maybe the problem with the Serial?
