Hello friends! How are you? Hope you are doing well! I was very focused in my MBP8,3. But I have a cMP5,1 now and I want to upgrade to Big Sur. It's running High Sierra, already with a R9 380 installed. Question: I need to upgrade to Mojave in order to update boot loader or can I go straight to Big Sur via OCLP? Thank you in advance!
Start with Mojave to get the firmware update.

i would go with Catalina, then BigSur will upgrade through system presences without usb drives or other sources.
this is just my personal experience this past week on my unsupported MacBook air.

And make sure to use OCLP 0.3.0 or newer (current nightly builds). There is a fix for a boot hang on MacPro's when using 11.3 or newer.

I found a 500Gb NVMe stick I forgot I had from upgrading a X5 and wanted play around with going past High Sierra on my iMac 12,2 with a Radeon 6970. Now that the non metal acceleration is a thing, if I install OCLP and spoof I can get 11.6 from SU and then just patch the volume after boot? Sounds easy..

Does anyone know what's happened to Patch Sur, trying to update to 11.6 but the Patch Sur app is not working, checked Git Hub and the app is no longer there.

It looks like the micro patcher is still on GitHub and reports of it working with 11.6. I would just convert to OCLP at this point tho

Was going to wait to convert to OCLP till Monterey, buts looks like I will have to do it with 11.6, I will try it on a external drive first, does the Migration Assistant app work ok to transfer my data.

I updated my OpenCore config using OCLP 0.3.0 nightly build with SuPlus, disabled nvmefix kext - and my CMP 2008 and CMP 2009 - works great! Updated my old reserved 11.2.3 to 11.6 - without any issues!
What does/did disabling the nvmefix kext do?

Just switch to OCLP, enroll in Apple's Beta Software Program and it will allow you to natively download macOS Monterey Beta I guess 8 now.

Worked like I thought, did a moderate spoof and got 11.6 on my iMax 12,2 with a Radeon 6970. Did the system volume patch and have acceleration. Used ResXtreme to fix the flashing colors. Everything is nice and smooth except for some weird artifacts on some windows from time to time especially in Finder. Any fix for that?

EDIT: Some other bugs I ran into is the Music app wont open half the time because I don't have permissions and the menu bar is missing sometimes after a restart. These are kinda deal breakers for me. I might try Mojave or Catalina with OCLP. How is the non Metal acceleration on either of those?

I installed OCLP Catalina on my iMac12,2 with the same HD6970 card. All are good including graphics acceleration and no any artefacts on any windows. All default apps are working as expected. The only issue is the Displays Preference pane in Settings after the post-install volume patch (for graphics acceleration). Please see my post.
Please note: You will need to enable Catalina support in OCLP settings and set SMBIOS to moderate before building the EFI. Otherwise, you won't be able to install Catalina.

Installed succesfully on Macbook Pro 15' Late 2011. GPU permanently disabled with help of @dosdude1 youtube guide.
Ten years, and i'm still able to run latest XCode version on this machine. Thank you all, who keep working hard having these mac's run with latest firmware even in 2021.

There is some problems tho, Apple TV is crashing, plenty of graphical glitches, night shift is not showing in Display settings (but you still can enable it via new Control Center by taping on Display bar) but i hope all these thing are temporary. Wish i could contribute somehow...

After updating to 11.6 I experience random crashes on the whole system. I'm not sure if it started before 11.6 but now it happens very often. Suddenly each app that is open crashes and I cannot reopen it. Even finder crashes and the only available option is to keep the power button pressed for a couple seconds which shows me a window to shutdown or restart the iMac.
I downloaded Mac OS from the App Store and reinstalled it without deleting anything. The problem stopped for a week but today it happened again. Is this a known issue related to OCLP? Should I try a different version (using 0.2.4)?

Kalimera!

This has been discussed here several times. Others found out that sudo purge can stop the problem.

Unfortunately the core OC developers had never experienced it so far and no debugging or development of a solution was possible so far. Happens with Monterey, too. Seems to happen on supported systems, too. Sometimes a message of a Volume Hash Mismatch comes up before or while things become bad.

It is still not clear if we are facing an Apple bug here!

I encountered the same thing.

I suspected Safari 15 update which came a little after 11.6.

Update OCLP to 0.2.5 and reinstalled Big Sur 11.6 but not the Safari 15. Stable after that.

Of course, I can't be sure what is the root cause...

use the nightly build of OCLP I believe it's 0.3.0 it has a lot of fixes in it and one a crash on older systems

I experienced the same issue in 11.6 one time, and after a reboot it hasn't happened again. That was a week ago. I have never updated to Safari 15 so I think it is unrelated to that. It happened to me after one of my Safari 14 tabs crashed from becoming unstable or something.

I'm on OCLP 0.2.4. Haven't had a chance to try sudo purge.

11.6 was too much for me, I installed 10.15.7 and OCLP volume patch. Works perfectly. Since this is the Big Sur thread I won't dwell on it. But thanks for the help.

as much as they achieve acceleration on older devices, applications that rely on the metal API won't work like Apple TV.

for these cases, there's not much you can do, be content to be able to use the updated system or go back to the latest compatible with your hardware.

about crashes: I'm not having it, because I'm just using OpenCore its drivers or extra kexts, just the basics to bring up the system, since my GPU is compatible with metal API.

It happened to me after one of my Safari 14 tabs crashed
Me too. It has happened also during navigating in finder but most of the times it happens after opening a few more Safari tabs. I can still navigate in already open tabs but cannot refresh or load another webpage. If I click on any app on the dock it crashes (including Finder) and the windows start closing one after another.
I use iStat Menus to check stats from my iMac and I have noticed an instant increase on gpu memory from 40% to 90% after opening 3-4 tabs on Safari. I will stop using Safari and stick with Brave. It's working much better. The increase on the graph below is captured while I was using more than 4 tabs on Safari.

It's buggy kext, that i replaced by fix in OC config. In my case - my NVME Apacer on SM chipset - don't need this kext, all that it does for me - it cosmetic effect for icons on disk (gray instead of yellow) - that i gain by fix in OC config.
Hi,
I've seen you got 12.0 B8 installed on your cMP5.1. were there any problems?
