RE: Migration of PC data (photos, contacts, calendar Outlook, bookmarks Chrome etc.) to a MBP 9,1 running Monterey 12.3.1

Hello all,
I have acquired a MBP 9,1 for a family member and wish to transfer their data on a windows 11 Lenovo machine to the MBP. The MBP currently has a clean Catalina install and plan to upgrade beforehand to Monterey 12.3.1 (as is my own MBP 9,1). Is the migration tool made available in Monterey Utilities (or downloaded from from Apple) a good way to proceed? I believe I saw a comment mentioning that there were bugs in terms of Monterey transfer tool but not sure. Or would it be better to transfer data while the machine is on Catalina; or just do a "manual/sneaker network" transfer although tedious i.e transfer docs, pics, Office templates, contacts, calendar, Chrome bookmarks, etc? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

I believe in learning as you go, when it comes to switching from Windows to Macs.

Doing things manually encourages that learning.

Start clean on Monterey and go bit by bit.

Things like contacts, calendar, bookmarks should really go into cloud, eg. master copy with Google Contacts, Calendar and Chrome.

Devices(Macs, Windows, iPhones, etc) can just sync with master copy.

OCLP 0.4.2 on cMP 5.1 automatic install 12.4. No issues. SORRY CORRECT IS USE OF 0.4.3

iMac 13,1 is now running macOS 12.3.1. Sidecar does not work over WiFi, only over USB. Error message is "The device timed out". My previous post 5243 reported that Sidecar worked correctly under 12.3. iPad was updated to iPadOS 15.4.1, but that did not resolve the problem.

If the data on the PC is not encrypted (with BitLocker for instance), I would buy a Sata do USB cable and manually copy all my docs and use the Photos app to import my photos direct from the PC's hard drive (or SSD).

When everything is already on the MBP, then I would do a Time Machine backup and only then I would update to Monterey.

Contacts, calendars, and chrome bookmarks are cloud-based, I suppose. Once you log in to chrome, you would have all your bookmarks, contacts, etc.

Fusion went haywire already with 12.3 and Intel4000.e.g. Macmini6,1.
Its was working solid with 12.3.1 on my rMBP (10,1) when forced dGPU via gfxCardStatus. After all the pains of 12.4 beta, I reverted back to 12.3.1 as things were way more stable. I'll be waiting for the 12.4.1 beta at this point. The only bad experience of reverting back without all of the good things posted on this thread about optimal config for testing new beta's, my last Time Machine backup was 2 weeks old and learned that you can not simply downgrade when on the latest version. I had to wipe my internal, install 12.3.1 fresh and use the Migration Assistant to restore my system. I should have taken a TM backup just prior to upgrading to 12.4 so at least I would have that to fall back on.

I might try that on a rainy Sunday afternoon. I've got only 1 external SSD, which I use for Time Machine. I've got an old 80 GB SATA HDD that I can use in a Sharkoon dock and connect with USB 2.0. Should 80 GB be enough to install macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and the supplemental updates?

Catalina currently occupies ~40 GB on my external SSD. Base install, no data migration, I just set up an admin account so I could log in to it. Haven't run any purges or cleanups on it. You should be good with 80 GB

ok. I see. On my non metall Macmini5,2 2011 with Amd HD 6630 Fusion runs under 12,4 beta absolutely fine. On Macmini6,1 2012 no chance - very strange.

Hi there,

I installed Monterey 12.3.1 on my Macbook Pro Late 2013. It often crashes when I work with Photoshop or Parallels Desktop. After that, no AirDrop and Bluetooth works. I also get the error message "Volume Hash Mismatch".

What can I do to fix certain errors?

Use Google Translate. sorry

Did you skip installing macOS 12.1? I believe the firmware upgrade to 432.60.3.0.0 should have arrived with that, see this post on apple support forum: Jan 2, 2022 7:30 PM

yes i installed it. the link given points me to a topic with mac mini 2014. i have a macbook pro 2013. i don't know if the support is there. should i update the efi with an older system?
Install the latest Big Sur release on an external USB disk and it should update the MPB 2013 firmware to the latest version.
You can always check if the firmware is at its latest version with Silentknight.

I had similar crashes, at first I thought it was just one app but then over a short period more apps started to cause similar panic and crashes. I gave up as I needed some stability so I reverted to 12.3.1 until a newer 12.4.x beta version comes out.
