The use of switches is a little odd (for Apple) but not that surprising. Google’s Material design system uses switches across the board, for example, including in Mac apps. There are some definite pluses (their use is instantly clear to most people, and as long as the designer hasn’t done something ridiculous, you can easily tell when one is activated at a glance), but it’s definitely not “Mac-like”.

Many UI elements that started on mobile have migrated to the desktop, so I’m less annoyed with their use. The text alignment in the new Settings window however: woof.

Here are screenshots of the new Clock app.

Apparently, in Mac OS Ventura Photos app, it seems they have removed the option to make/apply any photo as a wallpaper. I hope I am wrong, but I can't find the menu command that was there before. Hope to be proved wrong!

Can't find it either.

can it still be done in system preferences?

Again, as is every year, seems that they have succeeded in needlessly complicating perfectly fine existing menus for the sake of change, and introducing many more bugs, as opposed to simply just fixing them to begin with. Groundhog day . .

Sure you can; you can add a folder (wherever located) to choose your wallpaper from.
So when I upgraded, it had every photo of what I like to shuffle through of various photos 200 some odd.

When I did a clean install it only shows 33 photos. which is weird.

No additional content like in the Trackpad or MagicMouse settings where it shows what each setting does.
Please send them feedbacks! First betas is the only moment when they listen... otherwise it will stay forever like that...

But did they fix the bug that has been there since Big Sur 11.3 where it would take the unedited image instead of the edited one (if you don't have any edited image, just try applying a blacknwhite filtre on a photo and then select it via System Settings.

I'd love more info on Stage Manager beyond the basics... (or I need to know if it only handles very basic scenarios).

Looks like it's limited to 5 or so "stages/stacks", but...
  • Is it possible to have two windows of the same app visible in one stage/stack?
  • How many different apps can you have in one "stage/stack"? Can I have say... 10 apps/windows on there... 20?
  • Can I have 5 apps with 4 windows of each app on one stage? Can they all be visible at once?
  • I saw them demo tabbing between different windows of the same app by clicking the thumbnail 'stack', but can I have two safari windows, or two finders visible on one stage? If so then what does the clicking initiate? (ie, you have them side by side, or tiled in some way)
  • Obviously it's displaying app little icons on the thumbnail, which is useful, but it would be funny to see 10 icons on there... I'd love to see how it handles this or what the "failure point" or limit is.
Honestly asking all these questions makes me pessimistic that it's going to be more for 'basic' use than I'm imagining. When really I'd love to use stage manager kinda like mission control spaces (but with the thumbnails always visible, and no jarring sliding animation...those are the two things I hate about mission control spaces) Yeah, this is pretty niche, but I think on 27' + these are realistic scenarios.

How? There's a search bar right at the top. Each setting type is categorised clearly and makes use of the horizontal space of the Mac's screen, which is its default orientation. The icons are also clear.

The new System Settings is designed for vertical scanning and scrolling per iPhone and iPad.

It's just another example of Apple trying to converge iOS and macOS and not thinking about the fundamentals; that macOS is a pointer experience first.
There’s many criticisms of the new one but it’s far easier to find things. I’ve never seen anyone defend the old one. It’s a mess. It’s prettier though.

How many different apps can you have in one "stage"? Can I have say... 10 apps on there... 20? (on a 32 inch display this is a feasible scenario). Or is there some kind of limit. Obviously it's displaying little icons on the thumbnail, so it would be funny to see 10 icons on there... I'd love to see how it handles this or what the "failure point" is.

Basically in concept I'd love to use stage manager kinda like mission control spaces, but with the thumbnails always visible. (and no jarring sliding animation)
& to add to this what happens if you have the Dock on the left when using Stage Manager?

if i edit color, or crop an image in photos, that's always been the photo that opens in system preferences>desktop & screensaver.... 🤔

Okay, so I was able to get it installed and up/running. I was most curious about the new System Settings app (System Preferences' replacement), and while initially I wanted to be positive and give it a chance, unfortunately, I am not impressed. It's basically iOS now, and the submenus are awful and hard on the eyes. The great visual trackpad pane is now all text; no "demonstration". It's pitiful, honestly.

^ This is Accessibility — not too bad upon first sight, BUT...

^ This is the display submenu of Accessibility. It's horrid. Hard on the eyes, too "wordy" without visual indicators, meh.

Also, there does not seem to be a way to rotate between desktop wallpapers anymore. Edit: Nevermind, you can still do that. You do have to 'select' a folder, or cluster, then click the "i" button, then it'll allow you to rotate, etc. It just isn't clear upfront.

Specifically in regards to System Settings, ugh. I really don't like how they went with the lowest common denominator, especially there was nothing wrong with the previous configuration. It might have been a bit dated, but it was much easier on the eyes and more "tight".

Edit: Added a screenshot of trackpad settings to show what I mean when I mentioned trackpad settings and no more demonstrations.

^ This is Ventura. Now, compare and contrast...

^ In Monterey, here's what it looks like - very user-friendly and easy on the eyes, right?

Hopefully this is just beta and they'll tweak SP to make it more... I don't know, maybe less iOS-like? Especially with the submenus.
iOS-ification continues. Sad. Despite all their talk of never merging iPad and Mac OS, I think merge is all but confirmed at this point.
