Hey All, I installed OCLP with Big Sur on my 2011 5,1 Mac Pro with a Radeon RX 580. I get a notice for a security update from Apple, is it okay to install the Big Sur security update? ALSO, it also gives me the option to upgrade to Ventura. Does anyone know if this would be okay or should I try the upgrade from outside or not try it at all. BTW my Bootup drive is a 1TB Samsung partitioned into 2 bootups that I backup from one to the other and I just upgraded CarbonCopyCloner to allow me to do this. So I was wondering if I upgrade to one partition and if there are any issues, if I could just wipe it and go back to other partition and back it up as I had been doing before. You guys have no idea how much of a lifesaver this has been in the past. I also have an additional 5,1 Mac Pro with same configuration with same GPU and SSD setup, and I am still using High Sierra on it until I work out all of the kinks on this one. So far, it's been running pretty well IMHO, and I don't know why Apple never allowed this old hardware to be upgraded to OSs from past few years. Thanks for any info.

Well, a full day working with Ventura in my Mac Pro. Everything runs perfect. Updated wifi/bluetttoth module, USB 3.1, ESATA and Thunderbolt ports running perfect. I want to thank again to all the people involved in this project.

THANKS!
Hi trifero,

We were both on a thread a while back discussing Samsung NVMe M.2 drives, and I appreciated how courteous and helpful you were.

Glad to hear you're successfully running Ventura, I was thinking of just going to Monterey, but if I'm going to the trouble to upgrade, might as well go as far as practical.

If it's not too much trouble, could you please tell me which Wifi/bluetoth module you used and what you came up with for Thunderbolt?

I also have a 5,1 with the dual 3.46 processors, and I need to use a newer version of Creative Cloud Apps than Mojave supports, and a few other pieces of software as well.

Thanks

I recently bought an iMac Late 2013 that supports up to Catalina, but with OCLP I updated it to Ventura 13.4.1, the system was installed and the patches well but then I turned it off and when I turned it back on the system load well but when the screen of the choose user when I chose a user the screen was turned off for half a second and then appeared on the screen to choose user so in an infinite loop and even the screen would turn off at times without me touching anything, I had something similar happened in a virtual machine with host in Ubuntu and had OS X 10.8 only with white screen. Does anyone know why it happens and how I solve it? ⌘🥵

Hi, Larry. Glad to hear from you again. I have been running Monterey. Rock solid. And I really thought it was going to be the end of my Mac Pro 5,1 life, but working with Ventura a couple days now and not a single failure or but. It´s running simply perfect, as Monterey did. The main difference is that Montery runs with no root patches at all with the aproppiate hardware. Ventura needs to patch the USB 1,1 problem and Polaris graphics. But besides that, both are running perfect for me.

Graphic card is a Amd Radeon RX 580. Really cheap nowadays. As for the wifi/bluetooth module I installed this one:

But if you have already a compatible card, you can buy the adapter...

I´m also running a Caldigit FASTA 6GU3 Plus, gives me USb 3.1 and 2 bootables ESATA ports...

..but the FASTA 6GU3 Pro also runs fine....

As for the Thunderbolt, I use a flashed Titan Ridge, but it´s a little tricky. Don´t works with all kind of harware.

Hope it helps.

Hi trifero,

I appreciate the speedy response. Thanks ever so much, that gives me a lot of food for thought. I hadn't even thought about the Thunderbolt adapter, but that might be handy.

I inherited a 3.33 Six Core 5,1 from a client to experiment on, so I don't have to risk my main workstation until I have the procedure down pat. I picked up a couple more 2TB 970 EVO Plus blades yesterday for around $60 apiece on Prime Day, and I'm going to put them to good use in that machine.

As long as the root patcher solves the USB 1.1 problem I think I'll be okay. I don't do much WiFi on this machine and when I looked at all the cards available I couldn't make heads nor tales of them. With your suggestion I may just upgrade.

I just ordered a 580 refurb as well, I have 2 NVIDIA 2GB 680 Mac Edition models which work with Metal, but they're getting a little slow these days, so I thought I'd replace at least one. Hopefully the card I ordered wasn't mined to near death. The prices certainly are better than they were.

Always a pleasure to chat with you, wish I could offer some tech assistance in return, but my brain isn't getting any younger, and just wading through some of these 300 page threads makes my eyes glaze over.

I do have lots of good Sourdough tips, if you'd like to take up baking.

Thanks again

Due to the typos in your post, it is really hard to understand what happened and where you stand now.
That is, there is no macOS 14.4 or 14.4.1 (c). Did you mean 13.4 and 13.4.1 (c)?
macOS 13.4.1 should install with OCLP 0.6.7. If you have trouble installing that version there are 2 things you might try.
1. Create another Admin User in the System Settings/Users and Groups, enable fast user switching, switch to the new User and try the OS 13.4.1 install again using the full installer available here;
2. Try the nightly OCLP 0.6.8 available here; and then the OS 13.4.1 full installer
The 13.4.1 (c) SRS should be available (Software Update) after you start up in 13.4.1.

I made a stupid mistake while running some terminal commands to do some coding in Xcode, overlooking the inclusion of a softwareupdate command.

macOS updated to 13.4.1 on my MBP 10,1 and I'm left unable to revert or install root patches.

When I attempt to revert, I receive the following error:
- Unable to create new snapshot Reason for unpatch failure: Can't load "System/Volumes/Update//System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist" OS Major version unrecognized - Failed to revert snapshot via Apple's bless command

When I attempt to install, I receive the following error after it reaches the point of rebuilding the kernel cache:
- Unable to create new snapshot Reason for snapshot failure: Can't load "System/Volumes/Update//System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist" (Yes, that's a double slash) OS Major version unrecognized

Yes, those are double slashes reported in OpenCore

Been pulling my hair out trying a variety of things, including trying the 0.6.8 nightly build. Anyone have any thoughts on what I broke?

Just to let you know that once I updated my Mac Pro 5,1 to Ventura, I also updated my Macbook Pro M1 16" and my Macbook 12" 2015. And while working on my Mac Pro I noticed a very strange thing: the pointer disappeared of the screen now and then...

Yes, I forgot about Universal Control, 🤪.

I confim you that it works like a charm also. For that, I supose the Wifi/bluetooth module is necessary.

Hi trifero, Thanks for the heads up on that.

I'm a wired mouse and keyboard kind of guy, which is why the USB 1.1 patch was of more concern to me, but I'll probably update the module anyway (it looks fairly easy to do). So, this only happened before you installed the new module?

Thanks

I am running a MBP 2015 11,5, do I need to install the Bluetooth module if I have implemented the AMFI-pass b4?

Some random observations with latest RSR:

Just updated my MacBook 8,1 from 13.4.1 to 13.4.1(c) - update process and result are perfect, no hassle with restored/faulty APFS volume or cryptex leading to non-boot. Done with OCLP 0.6.7 (before update and re-patched root volume as well). It reported 5min time to update, then when progress bar was at the end started to download 137MB and took another couple of minutes, rebooted, and needed re-patching of graphics with OCLP.

On MP5,1 it does not work, update progress shows 5min estimated time then jumps to the end and reports some error.

Needing help with OCLP Ventura installer on my 5,1 Mac Pro - I am using an XFX 6600 XT - Monterey is currently installed to my internal NVMe SSD and boots with Martin Lo's package.

I created a USB drive and can see the installer in the boot screen, and an Apple logo + progress bar shows, and then the display goes black while the MP stays on, I would assume this has something to do with the AMD drivers? Any ideas?

Also - upon first booting into Monterey, graphics were EXTREMELY slow, until I reverted root patches and rebooted. Now they're fine, but I get no option to install root patches, and audio is stuttering. To be fair, I don't know if it was stuttering before I reverted root patches.

Any suggestions on either issue? This is my first time with OCLP in a couple of years.

I am not able to download the Mac OS security response Ventura 13.4.1(C). Is anyone else having that problem? This occurs on both my Mac Pro 6.1 and my Mac Pro 5.1. I'm using OCLP 0.6.7 and using root patches.

The reason for this is that you are a proud owner of the pre-Haswell Macs which are not eligible for the Rapid Security Responses.

Just updated to macOS 13.4.1(c) on a Macbook pro (mid 2014). After updating the system didn't start up, I had to start on safe mode pressing Shift and then reinstall Root Patch. After reboot everything is working again.

Last week i updated my base 2016 MacBook Pro 13 to Ventura 13.4.1 using OCLP and I am surprised how it's working. Maybe I had low expectations but it runs really well. Some animations are even smoother than on Monterey (also it run pretty bad on my MacBook).
There's some problems I have:
- settings app - that thing is really slow, scrolling is like in 5fps,
- Apple TV+ is not working - I can browse it, but I can't watch anything, there's just a black screen,
- there's some problems with watching content in general, on YouTube and Disney+ there are some weird drops in fps, like it's playing in 30fps or so and every 20-30 sec it drops to 5fps or whatever for like 3 sec, gotta be honest it's quite annoying as I watch videos a lot. At first I thought it's safari problem, but it's also happening on Firefox, chrome and arc,
- HBO Max - i have to try and refresh the site at least 20 times to have it play anything, wasn't happening on Monterey,
- wifi is slow to reconnect,
but still, overall, it's working really well, and I'm grateful to OCLP developers for giving older machines "second life".

I'll wait for 13.5 update and if it doesn't fix my streaming issues, I'll probably downgrade to Catalina and stay on it until I get myself Apple Silicon MacBook.

*also - it's not OCLP related, but Safari 17 (even though it's not released yet) is A LOT smoother and faster than 16. Everything loads faster and scrolling through sites is sooo smooth, especially on YouTube, you can clearly see and feel the difference.

Does it support h264,HEVC hardware acceleration on both encoding and decoding? Have you check with software enablement?
While I'm not actively using Ventura on my Mac Pro 5,1 w/ a R580, when I tested H.464 / H.254 acceleration the answer is yes it is reported as supported.

Is there a quick way to determine if a given update is safe to install or not, without having to read through the last few pages of this thread every time?
