macOS 14 Sonoma on Unsupported Macs Thread

I'd get in touch with Apples tech support to have that fixed on the server side.

Thank you, I had considered that but since I'm running Sonoma on an unsupported iMac and had this issue I wasn't sure if they'd help or not So that's why I asked here. I actually created the Sonoma VM in Fusion while I was on Monterey, but then after upgrading to Sonoma via OCLP and then logging out of the VM and seeing this happen I wasn't sure if Apple would do anything. I guess I'll boot from Monterey so I can say it also happened under a supported OS.

Thanks @amaze1499 I will call Apple support. However, to cover my butt, I got rid of OCLP and wiped the drive and reset PRAM and put Monterey back on here as that's the last supported OS, so when they ask what I'm running I can tell them Monterey as it's the same OS that was present when the VM was created. Thanks again. I'll take it from here Yes to also answer your other comments, yes it shows up on all devices including Appleid.apple.com but if i remove it on the site, it disappears but is back in the list of devices on each device, and it shows back up on the site as well. I think I'll get this fixed by Apple and then just keep the iMac on a supported OS. Thanks again

… Same problem also in safe mode, on 14.4b4: the VMware Fusion Applications menu is empty. And the same in a new admin test account; and also after a full (deep) uninstall, reboot and reinstall of VMware Fusion 13.5: so, it is probably something related to the system (graphics?). IIRC, the Fusion Applications menu is an Electron app: which could be relevant or not (don’t know).

... And, yes, it indeed looks like it has to do with the Electron Framework and other things (from "~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/VMware Fusion Applications Menu Helper-2024-02-22-120158"):

Hope it's software based AVX2 functionality or something similar that can be configured via OCLP that will see our legacy Macs good for another couple of versions of macOS. Exciting!!

On another note, cMP 4,1>5,1 having issues when waking the screen (Mac isn't actually sleeping). Most of the time I hit the power button on my monitor then hit the space bar on the keyboard and after a few seconds the screen wakes up and I can enter my password. Other times the screen won't wake ( have tried unplugging the DisplayPort cable etc without luck) - it appears to have panicked (can't even remote in). Unsure if it panics before or as a result of waking my screen and hitting the keyboard. Anyone else experiencing that with their cMP? Any Energy Settings and/or settings in their OpenCore config.plist file that gives them successful screen wake every time? Doesn't happen when running Win11 Pro 🤯on the same cMP.

MBP5,2: coming closer to a working machine.
Without knowing if this might have (had) an effect, made an OCLP 140n from source, used it for EFI.
Starting the USB installer (which actually resides on the now reinstalled internal SSD) remained tricky. The LED for the optical sensor at the bottom of the mouse kept going off soon after installer started, and not back on. What helped in the end was plugging the USB hub out of the connector on the MBP and immediately plugging back into another of those three USB connectors. That triggered something to power the mouse again.
During the reboots when installing, the LED went on and off again, but during the last three reboots it went off only briefly then back on. So the mouse/keyboard were on for the login!

Just finished the root patches (with the OCLP from source). After reboot internal trackpad/keyboard work (and external as well). Writing now from Safari on that machine.
Next will be OTA installation of 14.4b3.

Thanks for the information. You are right, it is good news for anyone still using C2D based machines.
I tried to reproduce your results with MacBook Pro 5,2 , but the procedure did not work in my use case.
It is possible to power USB devices from the hub and thumb drives from the computer ports, but neither keyboard nor track-pad worked; no USB recognition. Same was true for wired devices routed through the hub. I utilized OCLPs 1.4.0n up to 2.20.24.
There was a mention in OCLP 1.4.0n change-log which referred to USB 1.1 functionality in Penryn machines.
Currently, booting into the Sonoma 14.4x installer on a thumb drive with OCLP 1.4.0n (2.20.24 variant) fails with the "prohibition" sign and message to "contact apple support". Just some data points.

MBP5,2 upgraded OTA to 14.4b3 from b2. Using OCLP from source, latest.
Update proceeded well upto login screen (had to force reboot the Installer once).
Getting the USB-connected mouse/keyboard powered succeeded after many attempts. Nothing reproducible due to my lack of understanding.
Then applied the root patches. The proper KDK for b3 was loaded.
Internal trackpad/keyboard and WIFI ok after that. Several crashes of login screen, and menu bar not showing. Was OK with b2. But some things working, like taking these screenshots and attaching them here in Safari.
Legacy USB1.1 support in the EFI, and non-metal support in the root patches are „double-beta“ (OCLP and macOS). The continuous progress being made on the wide spectrum of Apple-unsupported machines by OCLP team is amazing. Thank you!

When you mention "Getting the USB-connected mouse/keyboard powered succeeded after many attempts", did you just plug and unplug the USB connector via the hub or computer port, until it succeded in initilizing USB connection?

Same here on MBP11,1. Great work by the OCLP team.

As usual on that machine (for which KDK-less patching is used), two kexts in /Library/Extensions are in conflict with the yet unpatched system after installation. This time, forgotten to remove them before installing. Safe mode booting helps out and all OK after root patching.

It is possible to power USB devices from the hub and thumb drives from the computer ports, but neither keyboard nor track-pad worked; no USB recognition. Same was true for wired devices routed through the hub. I utilized OCLPs 1.4.0n up to 2.20.24.
There was a mention in OCLP 1.4.0n change-log which referred to USB 1.1 functionality in Penryn machines.
Currently, booting into the Sonoma 14.4x installer on a thumb drive with OCLP 1.4.0n (2.20.24 variant) fails with the "prohibition" sign and message to "contact apple support". Just some data points.

I also got the "prohibition" sign when trying to boot 14.4 from USB. Probably it is due to the general USB problem which also affects keyboard/mouse.
If I remember correctly, back in jackluke times pre-Big Sur, external USB SSD also had to be unplugged/plugged back in to be responsive before a cure was found and put into the EFI...

When you mention "Getting the USB-connected mouse/keyboard powered succeeded after many attempts", did you just plug and unplug the USB connector via the hub or computer port, until it succeded in initilizing USB connection?

Mostly plug and unplug. I also tried to boot in safe mode, that made USB responsive once, but was not reproducible.

I just did the upgrade to Sonoma 14.3.1 on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Did it OTA, except after it did the installation had to do the post install patches using a usb hub and wired keyboard and mouse. Nice thing is I still have my usb drive I built for this MacBook pro for monterey if sonoma causes headaches.

been using it now for about an hour and a half. Seems to work as good or maybe even is a little bit faster than monterey. The test will be later this afternoon and evening when I go chill in the one starbucks I go to on fridays for a few hours and see if it decides to act stupid. don't think it will, since it should have during installation if it was gonna act up.

The Aerial screensavers are a no go but do you mean the wallpapers also do CPU/GPU stuff that makes the fans run?
I have some Macs running Ventura and Sonoma and it is very similar IMHO if you just stay away from Aerial
and also obviously anything other that is x265. But that of course goes for Ventura also and any processors
from that era. Grateful for a comment?

Not sure if I understand your question correctly (not a native speaker), but I had 1-2 processes that used well over 100% CPU in the activity monitor when using one of the new Aerial screensavers/background images.
I also wrote about it here and/or on Discord. I think it was the process "VTDecoderXPCService" among others

I was also surprised that the screensavers are always in the 4KSDR240FPS subfolder and not in one of the 2K folders: /Library/Application Support/com.apple.idleassetsd/Customer/

On my MacBooks, it is always the "VTDecoderXPCService" process that extremely overloads🤬 the CPU when the Sonoma screensavers are running. Under Ventura, everything worked perfectly.

Same here on MBP11,1. Great work by the OCLP team.

As usual on that machine (for which KDK-less patching is used), two kexts in /Library/Extensions are in conflict with the yet unpatched system after installation. This time, forgotten to remove them before installing. Safe mode booting helps out and all OK after root patching.

I just looked at my computer - and SoftRAID.kext is now missing! Was always there before?!?
This can only have been removed as part of one of the last OCLP or macOS 17.x.x updates.

You are right, they were always present (and still are in my case). On the occasion of the next OS update, I'll remove them all from /L/E and see what happens - if they will reappear, or are unnecessary.

its been a while since I checked this thread so I need a crash course update

I'm running OCLP 1.3.0 with Sonoma 14.0 on my secondary computer (living room) mid 2015 iMac 21.5 and the same thing on my headless mid 2014 Mac mini redundant file network server.

I have all OS updates blocked unless u prompt it, as I have found 14.0 to be most stable of all the previous versions, but I was wondering what the general consensus was regarding upgrading to 14.3.1 now.

I think a few months ago I saw in here things weren't stable to I stayed on 14.0 but I would like to upgrade if its stable enough. only issue I have on 14.0 on my living room mid 2015 iMac is the screen will wake at random times on its own and freeze lit unless I click the mouse to fully wake it and let it go back to sleep on its own or manually put it to sleep to darken the screen.

any insight would be appreciated and I don't mind playing with this computer, but I would prefer the Mac mini server to remain perfectly stable as it has been on 14.0.

VTDecoderXPCService is a videoplayback service and is part of the VideoToolbox framework that handles video compression, decompression, and conversion between formats. If you play anything that your CPU or GPU does not have hardware support for, your Mac will struggle and run the fans. As me and others have written on in this thread. It is a vintage Mac thing and has very little to do with OCLP as such. Being aware of that helps. Below is a quote that discussed this.

As I understand it it is simply the lack of hardware support for h265 that is the issue.
Apple added some forms of "hybrid hardware support" in 2015 (I assume the kind that works but makes the fans run crazy) Real h265 support is in Macs from 2017 as I understand it, but probably dependent on models and specs.
The M1 Macs and above appear to play 4K 60hz h265 just fine with no fans.
I am retired so am not deep into this anymore.
On most or all of the vintage pre-2017 OCLP style Macs, fans will run when attempting to play any h265 movie file or anything else h265 (such as hevc, heic and Aerial) I assume that is what Apple called "hybrid support". YMMV
