Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I have Sequoia 15.3.1 running on a 2011 MacBook 8.2. It has the faulty dGPU and I have used the nvram command and then software demux using OCLP to keep it running. When it works, it works great and the software demux has made it run cooler. I have a major issue that it won't fully boot most of the time. When I press the power button, the DVD drive whirs like normal and the small white light comes on but it doesn't progress any further, although the fans start up after a while. When it is in this state, I can still do an SMC reset but not NVRAM. If I persist in hard switch-off and switching back on, it will eventually boot but it is taking longer each time. Has anyone else had this issue and found a solution? Any tips for troubleshooting? This is my most "normal" everyday Mac, all my other ones are older and less compatible with the modern world (although great fun!)

OTA-updated 12" 2016 Macbook (9,1) and 2014 Mac Mini (spoofed to 8,1) to 15.3.2 with OCLP 2.2.0 without problems and even Universal Control is working. Updated supported M2 Mac mini with dual Apple 27" thunderbolt displays and had a weird experience where Display 1 Ethernet connection stopped working and informed me that no Ethernet cable was connected but moved the LAN cable to Display 2 and it came good. No problems with getting black screen after updating this time so perhaps that bug is fixed.

Watch Mr Macintosh YouTube channel. Very good OCLP tutorials. That being said, while OCLP greatly simplifies the process of installing later macOS versions on unsupported hardware, I don't recommend it for casual or novice end users. Once these users get themselves into trouble, they rarely can get themselves out of it.

The USB hub situation... Apple removed USB1.1 drivers from Ventura + later macOS versions (e.g. Sequoia) which is why Monterey is recommended for your hardware. Beyond Monterey, your keyboard and trackpad won't work during the installation. Hence, the need for USB 2.0 hub and external USB keyboard and mouse. However, once macOS is installed and OCLP post-install root patches have been applied, your keyboard and trackpad should work again.... until you revert OCLP root patches and try to apply any macOS updates.

Whether or not OCLP works your processor is extremely old and likely to run into issues with new software soon.

I’d start budgeting for a replacement. Even if it’s something only a few years newer as even the 2011 machines had significant advances in encryption, io standards, etc.

After updating M2 MM yesterday to 15.3.2, I updated iPhone to 18.4 beta 3 today and a few minutes later got a message on MM saying a software update was required to connect to iPhone. I ran it and it took about 15 seconds to complete and now iPhone mirroring is working again. This was normal BUT in the later afternoon I got ANOTHER message offering the SAME software update to connect an iPhone but that could not be downloaded for install — server glitch?

Gents I don't know what b3 or Haswell is in regard to my 4,1/5,1 machine, but I can say, OTA install of 15.3.2 went as expected root patches after, no issues so far, touch wood.

My retina MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) had to download the 15.3.2 separately and it then went as expected root patches after, no issues so far, touch wood.

Oh, and OCLP 2.2.0 on both

Well, I've got a nice MacBook Pro 15" 2015 "Retina" (MacBookPro 11,5)

Got it used, in really good shape but without an SSD and a bad battery, but was able to get that taken care of for not much money.

Then I was able to get it upgraded to Big Sur and then Monterey, but that was it. Apple pulled the plug on updates.

After reading up on these forums about Open Core Legacy Patch, I finally took the plunge and downloaded it.

After installing OCLP, I was able to download and put the latest Sequoia installer on a usb drive.

Reboot, install, and voila! It's working!!!!

Kind of fun to play with old hardware that's still got some life in it

I have done this with my 2015 15-inch MBP, my 2015 13-inch MBP and my 2015 11-inch Air with no issues. I currently have MacOS 15.4 Beta 3 installed and running with no issues. Although they are not my main Macs these days, I still use them occasionally and they all perform more than adequately. Yes, it is a shame Apple stopped supporting these solid computers when they can still run their current OS. Glad to see other's doing the same thing with their aging Macs!

I don’t know what the security profile is, using Open Core Legacy Patcher…I’m still doing some deeper dives on that. But as far as performance is concerned, I have no complaints whatsoever. And all the ports that I’ve tried are working.
