Photos Library on Mac doubled in size overnight

I installed Big Sur over the weekend — all went reasonably fine.

My iPhone, iPad and iCloud all sync and show the photos correctly.

Yesterday however my Photos on my Mac started to experience syncing issues and started to "Update" something like 7,7060 photos. Anyway, I let it run its course.

HOWEVER! The library has doubled in size over night and Photos was still "Updating" before I closed it down. Overnight my library size increased from 40.97GB to 87.23GB.
Duplicates are everywhere…

My iPhone still has the correct amount of photos.

Anyway… here I go with another clean install.

Not happy. At. All.

FFS Apple!

Edit:
Before anyone asks, I have already submitted a "bug report" to Apple… for what that is worth…

Just updated my 2014 13" MBP from Catalina to BigSur and its been fine for the most part. However, now my iPhoneXR and iPadPro, both on their latest OSes, don't see my Mac's Photos library so I cant sync any photos over. Anyone else have this?

Are you sure that's the latest update? The current is 11.2.2 isn't 11.3 a beta? Normal there may be bugs so let Apple know those sound like important bugs.

There is the 11.2.2 release for "normal" people.

"Nutty fruitcakes" like myself bypassed that and went straight onto 11.3 Betas 1, 2 and 33.

For "Nutty fruitcakes" read Developers and Beta testers. 🥰

I have now reported about 30 bugs and kernel panics with the Feedback Assistant. I have also reported two kernel panics via level 2 support. But never got an answer, nothing was fixed.

I have the impression that there are more bugs and kernel panics coming up with Big Sur.

Have any of you ever received a response by Apple?

No, but a couple f months ago I submitted a feature request to separate Backup from Finder Sync and Apple added that feature.

That makes sense to me, because it looks to me like Apple just doesn't fix bugs anymore but just adds new features that break even more ;-)

Hello Sill. My original post seems to have been taken over by other problems but you have brought it back. You describe exactly the problem I was having. I would have thought by now Apple would have seen our posts and done something about it with an update but I fear not. I thought Mac was supposed to be superior to Microsoft Windows but my wife's Windows 10 is much faster. Every action gets an immediate response, no waiting at all.

I'm still getting kernel panics when I connect my M1 MBP to my Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro and attempt to use it in Clamshell mode. This is after updating to today's macOS 11.2.3 update. I filed FB9035839. I pretty much can't use it with my external drives or monitor. Which means I can't access my external drive's media. And my Channels DVR isn't there. Huge bummer.

EDIT: Belkin does say in their support pages that it supports the M1 Macs. And it worked fine up until today's update.

I have a 2018 Mac Mini connected to 3 monitors: 1 via the HDMI port, 1 via a USB-C to HDMI and 1 via a USB-C to VGA (all Apple branded). I have a powered USB hub connected to the USB-C to VGA hub, and the monitor that is connected through that hub does NOT receive a signal at start-up IFF the power to the hub is connected or any of the peripherals are connected. As soon as the system is started up with that hub disconnected, I can reconnect it and the monitor carries on functioning. Deus ex machina!

Maybe one day they'll fix the issue with external monitors where the screen resolution reverts to incorrect resolution after sleeping or turning off the screen (on the external monitor).

Just so everyone is aware since there's been confusion both here and on another forum: the issue with 4K monitors not being able to get 144Hz has NOT been fixed as of 11.3 beta 3. The issue has been persistent since 11.1.

The post in which someone claims it to he working for them is from someone with a 2K monitor, not 4K. Their issue was never a real issue - just a graphical bug.

Again, 4K monitor, 144Hz, still not possible.

Really need an update to fix this memory issue. On cold start, system uses more than 4GB of RAM. Checked Activity Monitor and nothing running in the background but WindowServer is abnormally large (almost 1GB, sometimes more). Once I attach an external monitor, RAM usage increases another 2GB so I'm left with just under 2GB of memory to actually do tasks which is next to impossible especially in Safari where it keeps refreshing while getting "Page is using too much memory/resources".

So annoying and ridiculous.

Has anyone has issues with their Dock freezing? Its happened a couple of times for me, i can still drag items to the bin but can't launch any apps and the roll over app labels don't appear either. In the end i have to kill the Dock process using Activity Monitor, it immediately reloads and is fine then.

I thought it might be an M1 bug as it happened on my MBA to start with, but its now also happened on my intel mini too. Both are on 11.2.x.

YES. And when the dock doesn't work, neither does Mission Control or the top Menu Bar. Force Quitting/Relaunching Finder doesn't work for me, even restarting the dock via Terminal doesn't fix it. I'm forced to reboot thru a Terminal command than from the menu. I've reported this in three different filed feedbacks.

For what it's worth, this hasn't been an issue for me on the latest 11.3 betas.
