Thank you. For me aliases in the dock look like this since the update to Ventura:

I have folders in my dock, they look like this:

Definitely a Brave icon. Also did the same with a Firefox alias, and again it was a Firefox icon, and it worked.
Put your two aliases (Firefox and Brave) inside a folder called Browsers. Make an alias of Browsers. Drag the alias of Browsers to the dock (towards the right). What icon do you see in the dock? We are all seeing a blank document (with alias label) in the dock.

The advantage of this is that a single click on the alias in the dock opens the folder of browsers (or whatever is put there). Took me a while to understand all this.

I did exactly that with Monterey (only difference was that I made aliases of AppCleaner and Onyx). Made the alias of that browsers folder, dragged it to the doc, and it looked exactly the same, ie, a folder. And the aliases of those apps inside were fine.

Going to connect the external containing V13.0.1 of Ventura, will restart the Mini from it, and do what you ask. Will report back.

Update: OK, now I see what you are saying. After following the same process above, after dragging the alias of the Browsers folder to the dock, this time the icon was just a white, generic one (it actually had just about the same shape as the icon for LibreOffice). When I clicked on it, though, the two aliases of the apps (AppCleaner and Onyx) looked fine.

Weird bug. I don't remember something like that happening with any version of Monterey (nor any prior OS).

To clarify, I have V13.0.1 installed in an external Samsung SSD. I have yet to upgrade on either of my Macs from Monterey to Ventura (and will not, which is looking like along tome the way things are going).

Have you tried removing then re-adding the aliases?
Yes jscol, and I also tried deleting the plist files for the Finder and sidebar. This replaced my sidebar items with the default set.

But upon adding my apps into the sidebar again, they still don't work!

Deleting the preferences would have been the next thing I was going to suggest. The only other suggestion I can make is to try rebuilding the Launch Services database using a utility like Onyx (and also deleting the caches whilst you're there). However, if 'Open with...' works in the Finder, then I doubt it's an LS Database issue.

Rebuilding Launch Services in Onyx didn't fix anything.

Another thought: have you tried creating a new user account and seeing if it works from there?

Edit: And another:
I wonder if there is something unusual about the files you are trying to drag. Perhaps they have a quarantine flag attached? You could try pre-treating them with a utility like eclecticlight.co's Pratique, that will clear these flags.

Hey, jcscol - thanks once again for your suggestions.

I just created a new user account (admin) and added some apps to the sidebar, including Photoshop. The same malfunction happened in the new account.

I ran Pratique, after giving it Full Disk Access in System Preferences Settings... it made a number of changes to Photoshop... but the problem remains.

😑

BTW, I also awoke to a NEW problem this morning. The mouse cursor could move, but it could not select anything by clicking. No windows. No menus. No Dock. It was as if the buttons on the mouse were broken.

Command-Tab let me cycle through windows, and everything else worked. But not the mouse.

I had to hold the power button down, then hit “R” on my keyboard to Restart. The mouse is now working normally again.

I've been using Macs since 1994, and no upgrade has ever caused problems like this before. It's truly bizarre.

First, there was no sound. Next, double-clicking on an application would open the QuickLook window for the app. Same thing if I right-clicked on it and chose “Open”. It seems like every day begins with a new Mac problem.

Why oh why did I ‘upgrade’ to Ventura??

🥺

Just to clarify: if you run Pratique on a folder containing the images you want to open by dragging, does it find any quarantine flags on the image files?

Also, what app have you set as the default for opening those particular files? Is it the same as the app you are dragging them on to?

I just checked on a number of different folders containing only jpg files. No quarantines. I did, however, get a number of quarantine alerts on folders that contained non-image files.

Also, what app have you set as the default for opening those particular files? Is it the same as the app you are dragging them on to?
No... neither Photoshop nor Preview are my default app for opening JPG files. I use a small, very lightweight third-party app for viewing JPGs.

So I decided to make Photoshop the default app for opening JPG files.

I did a “Get Into” on a random JPG file on my Desktop, and when I clicked the “Use this application to open all documents like this one” button, I got this error message:

Screenshot.jpg
(I created “typo.jpg” earlier today in Photoshop, and have zero reason to believe that it's damaged)

So then I tried to change the “always open with” setting on a different JPG on my Desktop. This time, the Finder ACCEPTED the change, however.

Double-clicking a JPG now launches Photoshop. But Photoshop in the sidebar still doesn't work.

(As a test, I decided to add some other apps to the sidebar (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Apple Pages, Microsoft Word, etc). None of them worked.)

On a lark, I decided to once again try dropping image files onto Preview.app in the sidebar... and suddenly, Preview.app WORKS in the sidebar! It absolutely did NOT work yesterday!

What truly befuddles me is how inconsistent these problems are: Some JPGs allow me to change the default app, other won't; some apps work in the sidebar, others won't.

It's a real head scratcher.

(I don't know if it makes any difference, but my Adobe apps are not pirated, I have a Creative Cloud subscription. It also may be worth noting that every time I attempt a fix I always remove and re-add Photoshop to the sidebar several times.)

Well jcscol, you're not gonna believe it.

This morning I got up and tried once again to drag a file onto Photoshop in the sidebar. And it WORKED. It actually opened the image (or any image) in Photoshop.

I have done NOTHING to my iMac since my previous post last night. It just started working on its own. It fixed itself.

This Ventura update has been the most perplexing thing ever.

Of course, the Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign that I added to the sidebar last night still do NOT work.

But since Photoshop is the only one I really care about, I'll just accept what I've got, and move on.

Thanks so much for all of your help, jcscol, it is truly appreciated. Can I buy you a coffee online or one of those things?

Have two external monitors - 1 in landscape (main) 1 in portrait.
Whenever I maximise (video, rdp, ) on the main screen it continues to flicker the image between portrait and landscape making it unuseable/unwatchable.

Had to reboot my MBP in order to connect to a 802.1x wifi network - kept failing with a “authentication server not found” message.
Uptime was 21 days. Ridiculous. I’ve previously never had to restart between OS updates.
My iPhone 14 Pro running 16.1.2 is giving the same error, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the same bug as well.

I used to make fun of Windows for having these kinds of inane issues…

Edit: yup, rebooting the iPhone allowed it to join as well.

Experiencing an issue where if I select "Shutdown" from the Apple menu, the shutdown dialog never appears, but the 60-second countdown is still happening silently in the background.
Does not happen when choosing "Restart". Very strange. 13.0.1

New bugs in 22A5352e:
  • Universal Control may not work

New bugs in 22A5342f:
  • Many Notification Center widgets are black or blank (new issue in beta 7)

Currently known bugs (Build 22A5266r):

  • Some users cannot access the internet
  • Alias for Safari in the Applications folder
  • Stage Manager sometimes crashes
  • Stage Manager animations have low framerate
  • Stage Manager apps (on the left) might automatically hide (bug or feature?)
  • Stage Manager may switch to a different app form the sidebar when returning from viewing a full-screen app
  • Cycling through the windows of an app in Stage Manager behaves differently depending on the speed you click. Clicking slow only cycles between the currently active window and the "top" window, clicking faster cycles through all windows of the app.
  • Animations in the Weather app flip when enabling the sidebar.
  • The new System Preferences is buggy, sometimes panels scroll/wobble upwhen they should have fixed height.
  • Moving the cursor in text with the keyboard is buggy, sometimes the cursor moves very fast/jumps, sometimes it moves very slow, character for character.
  • Wallet might throw the error "Could not set up Apple Pay"
  • Finder might refuse to copy files from a smb/nfs network share (due to allegedly insufficient permissions)
  • MAS/iTunes might not load
  • Mac might now wake up from sleep/panic during sleep
  • Notification sounds might play much later
  • "Utilities" folder missing when opening application folder from within the dock
  • might not be able to install new fonts
  • AirPods text for "Noise Cancellation" is inconsistent (all over the place). The term "Noise Cancellation" is used in iOS and iPadOS. On macOS Ventura, sometimes you see "Cancellation", "Noise Cancellation", and "Noise Control". The verbiage use on macOS Ventura for this should be consistent with what's used on iOS and iPadOS, and that is "Noise Cancellation". To see the inconsistencies, look at System Settings > AirPods Pro
If I might, I have a new bug to add. After a restart from accidentally shutting off my desktop, any window I open is now "stuck" to the top left of my screen. HOW ANNOYING!

Hi everyone, I just came across a new(?) bug as well. When trying to edit my widgets, I can't do so. The cursor becomes the text icon, I can't edit my existing widgets or add new ones, nor can I toggle between/select a new widget. Is anyone else having this issue? I submitted a bug report, too.

I'm using 13.0.1 (22A400) on an Air (2020 – M1).

Edit: I realize now that the notification banners aren't working either, nor can they be cleared. Strange.

One other thing that I’ve experienced is sometimes applications will not actually “quit” – the window will close, but the process will remain open, even after I do command+Q.
Seems to happen randomly, but when it does, I need to terminate the application with activity monitor.

^^^^13.1 will be released next week. See if that fixes your issue.

Lou
I hope V-sync in Open GL games and Activity Monitor update frequency is fixed in MacOS Ventura 13.1. In order for bugs like this to be fixed. We need as many people as possible to report it to Apple so they can fix it.

I use a custom light and dark desktop picture. When the switch between dark mode and light mode happens automatically at sunrise when my Mac is still asleep, the tint color of the menu bar is not updated to color match with the new daytime desktop picture. But when I toggle dark and light mode myself, the menu bar always fits to the current desktop picture. Has somebody else experienced this bug?

That's intended OS behavior. macOS decides when to terminate a process and free some memory. ⌘Q just gives permission to delete. In case you want to open the same application again just 2 minutes later, it's still there in memory. The same is true for storage space. When you empty the trash, you wont instantly get more free space on the drive. Instead the purgable disk space rises for when the system decides to make it available.
