I can't explain better than this…
  1. make a createinstallmedia USB key for Mojave
  2. fully erase a drive with diskutility
  3. shutdown your Mac Pro
  4. remove all drives except the one you erased
  5. insert the Mojave createinstallmedia USB key on a Mac Pro USB2.0 port, won't work with USB3.0 cards
  6. power-on the Mac Pro, it will boot from the Mojave createinstallmedia USB key

It worked, thanks for the help.

I have had an issue recently, not able to update 10.14.3 with a Security update, or with yesterday's 10.14.4 update (either partial or full update). High Sierra to Mojave had gone well up to this point. After some thinks on this, I realized I used to keep a drive with 10.10 on it sitting on the desk. A couple of months ago, I put it back in the Mac Pro. Sure enough, when I reformatted the drive - removing 10.10 - the update proceeded as expected. I'm now running 10.14.4.

[Edit] To clarify, I boot Mojave from an internal SSD, in the Optical Upper slot. A PCIe drive can boot HS. The 10.10 drive is a 2TB HDD. A 10.10 bootable HDD, installed in Bay 2, seemed to keep 10.14.4 (updater or full) from installing on the existing 10.14 SSD. Removing the 10.10 booting capabilities from the HDD seemed to remove any roadblocks to updating.

Mojave requires APFS for system drive. Many who run into issues either circumvent that requirement or restore a clone to HFS+ and run into issues.

I want to boot in to an older disk with Sierra. Do I need another Mac that doesn't have Mojave for it to work?

Yes.

If you have a non-Mac EFI GPU, install the Sierra disk, let the Mac Pro boot Mojave, then you select the Sierra disk from SystemPreferences/StartUpDisk.

Ok, thanks.
[doublepost=1553771989][/doublepost]Now that I have Mojave on Mac Pro 2010, it is safe to install new updates like 10.14.4?

Generally speaking, yes. There is an issue with 10.14.4 and Apple Mail that should be updated rather quickly, but everything else appears to be fine.

Good Morning tsialex (at least here is morning)
I spent almost all the night trying (without success) to update ... the steps done
Mac Pro 2010 2 hexacore xeon 48 gb of mem + gtx 760 2gb video card (from macvid cards)
Osx High Sierra
firmware upgrade -- done (i have a 3rd party sata card with a fusion disk so (128gn ssd + 2tb HD) i was surprised)
the update started and remains stuck in the first phase while saying 24 minutes remaining
stopped restarted clearing nvram
the install begun .. and remained stuck at 22 /24 mins remaining with a dozen of tentatives

then my questions ...
could be the fusion disk apfs conversion ?
could be the non compatible sata controller (eventually you know about one apfs compatible and bootable ?)
Should i go with a new disk (i have a handy 1tb ssd disk here) doing the high sierra/mojave update on the motherboard controller and then moving the disk to the sata iii controller ?

Hints clues advices ?

many thanks for your wonder pages

Francesco

Remove your Fusion disk and your PCIe controller, use a SATA disk on the south bridge ports.

Do the firmware upgrade from macOS, so install Sierra/El Capitan, then you use the 10.13.6 MAS full installer to upgrade to MP51.0089.B00, then the 10.14.4 MAS full installer to upgrade to 141.0.0.0.0.

If your PCIe SATA controller is still supported, yes.

If you have a BootROM earlier than MP51.0089.B00, you won't install High Sierra, since it needs a firmware upgrade first.

Use El Capitan or Sierra to make it working again, since they don't need firmware updates. Make a createinstallmedia USB-key and install on your SATA disk. High Sierra 10.13.6 installer has MP51.0089.B00 BootROM upgrade and will ask you do to the upgrade first - usually it won't work when booting from the createinstallmedia USB-key, only from macOS.

You can still download El Capitan and Sierra:

El Capitan: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206886
Sierra: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208202

Re-read the first post, besides your Fusion drive that I just added, every pitfall was already there.

Hi every one, I just cant seem to get the public 141.0.0.0.0 from 140.0.0.0.0 installed.
I managed to install 140.0.0.0.0 with out a hitch. To install 140.0.0.0.0 I just switched my display to DP 1.1

I have a 2010 5.1 W3520 upgraded to a W3680,
a Mac version GTX 680, (it has METAL),
2 ssd PCI blades a empty NVME Samsung 970Pro and a AHCI Samsung MZHPV Sierra,
5 Spinners one on the second DVD drive SATA port with Windows 10
which is going to be moved to a SSD for jump starting a Titan Ridge Card.
a 4k Display on which the DP mode can be changed 1.1 to 1.2.
A Audio Firewire interface, there is also a usb connection to the display USB hub.

So far it the following didnt work:
First with Displayport switched to 1.1, then with unplugged display, meaning no display.
Releasing the button while and after flashing button.
Releasing while beeping and after beeping.
all of that makes my 5.1 W3680 chime and restart right away, just like a forced shut down / restart.

Do we have to have a display connected, or would it accept with a HDMI cable ?
I don't have a other display.

Will removing all connections and drives ?

I never tested if without a display the firmware upgrade will work. Xserve I know that works without a display, but it's not the same.

thanks your support is invaluable ... i am just wondering why apple did things so difficult .. but i know the answer

I had high sierra installed before trying to upgrade and the upgrade (except the stuck no-no situation) was running fine so i suppose the boot rom should be there

Releasing while beeping and after beeping.

Had the same issue. For some reason i had to hold the powerbutton much longer than with previous FW updates. When the beep comes, keep holding. When the post-gong comes, keep holding! At least 5 seconds longer.

High Sierra started with MP51.0084.B00 for 10.13.0, MP51.0085.B00 with 10.13.4, MP51.0087.B00 with 10.13.5 and ended with MP51.0089.B00 with 10.13.6.

Mac Pro only upgrade firmware with the full Mac App Store installer, if you have been using just the normal software updates, you probably have an earlier BootROM. That's why I told you to start with ElCapitan or Sierra.

All USB3.x that work with High Sierra still work with Mojave, AFAIK.

No one documented what PCIe SATA cards stopped working with Mojave, only AirPorts. I've read that some SATA and RAID cards stopped working, but I can't say what models, I stopped using PCIe SATA and RAID cards years ago.

Check the cMP {classicMacPro}{4,1 & 5,1} - Upgrade Guide Sticky Discussion thread, there are 3 threads about PCIe SATA cards and Mac Pro USB 3.x PCIe Cards.

Is there any workaround to get the boot screen if the metal GPU is not EFI? I tried installing an EFI non metal GPU to connect a second display, but, as expected, this combination does not work.

Only cards that have UGA pre-boot configuration support (aka Mac EFI) has "boot screens". A PC video card won't have any and it's not something that can be overcome.

Nope.

I have a 4,1 MacPro flashed to 5,1 with a 3680 Xeon processor, a SATA III pci card with Samsung SSD and a Geforce 980 videocard. I am still running High Sierra on HFS+.
I have read that the 142 firmware breaks my processor. That there are problems to flash the firmware to 141 if a PCI card is installed. I have considered to replace my Geforce by a Sapphire Pulse Radeon 580.
a) Will Apple use the destructive firmware update 142 in the upcoming 10.14.5 or 10.14.6?
b) is my OWC tempo pci-card compatible with the firmware update 141?
c) is the Radeon 580 at least as fast as the Geforce 980?
d) will the number of kernel panics increase after the update? (now my Mac is rock solid)
e) will the Mojave installer convert my HFS+ SSD to APFS or should I reinstall High Sierra on APFS first?
f) will booting be slower with APFS in Mojave than HFS+ in High Sierra?
g) I have a non retina display (Apple 23 inch). Is this a problem for reading text?
h) Is it possible to install Mojave while upgrading my High Sierra disk?
(If I have to install it on an erased SSD I won't be able to use my Adobe CS 6 anymore)
TIA

A) no - It’s not a public firmware, chances are slim to none.

B) owc doesn’t make a tempo, but sonnet does. Perhaps you mean Sonnet. I guess you purchased it through owc

C) it depends on what you’re doing with it.

D) my crystal ball is on the fritz, but I doubt you’ll have any issues

E) Yes it will. No I wouldn’t.

F) probably

G) not for me. You’ll have to judge that yourself

H) Yes
