Thanks.. just to let everyone know. I am on 2009 Mac Pro ,4.1 flash to 5.1.. I was already on high sierra 10.13.6 boot rom
MP51.0085.B00. I downloaded the full installer, ran it, it said i needed to update firmware, did the shutdown, held the power button until it flashed, let go, then a beep, machine updated firmware but could not see anything on the screen, it rebooted back into OSX, installer was still open and ready to continue, checked boot rom and it updated to 138.0.0.0.0.
( so for me it updated from MP51.0085.B00 to 138.0.0.0.0.) no issue; but I was already on 10.13.6.

Installed running now. I will report back. My card was already flashed from the person i bought it from for any future updates. You can test your card by downloading the metal benchmark app form the app store. if it runs then you know it is metal compatible already.
[doublepost=1537836132][/doublepost]

A mentioned above my card is - AMD radeon R9 280x. Installer is running now with 33 min left. I will report back once done. (i see the apple logo at boot as well)

all done

Brilliant thread. Thank you tsialex!!

I have a MacPro 4.1>5.1 with a GTX 970.

After updating the firmware to MP51.0089.B00 (using the original graphic ATI HD 4870), and then to 138.0.0.0.0 (with the GTX 970), how can I do a Mojave fresh install on another HD without being able to see the boot screen (usb boot / createinstallmedia) with a non-efi card (GTX 970)? How can I see the installation process?

And another question, do you know if the GTX 970 work 'out of the box' with Mojave or still need the NVidia Web Driver?

Thank you!!
You need the web drivers, so you have to wait for NVIDIA release them.

You can use startosinstall from 10.13.6 and it will install without the need of boot screens, but you need to wait for NVIDIA web drivers. Apple NVIDIA drivers on Mojave only support Kepler cards, yours is Maxwell.

Hi, so I did what you said but still cant upgrade to Mojave, what should I do?

Thanks again :)
You have to upgrade to 138.0.0.0.0, do exactly what the Mojave installer app says. But remember, with a GTX 970 you have to wait NVIDIA release of web drivers. Apple NVIDIA drivers on Mojave only support Kepler cards, yours is Maxwell.

Did you downloaded and opened the full Mac App Store installer for High Sierra 10.13.6? Link on the first post.

RX-460 is not on the Apple list of supported cards and some here had problems with RX-480 too.
Just a heads up that the reference RX480 is working fine here. Glad to see that I didn't have to flash it. Though I may go ahead and undervolt it and change it to an RX580 rom in the near future.

I already had the Sapphire RX560 in my 2012 Mac Pro. I went to update and went through the firmware update then installed Mojave. Now I’m not getting anything on screen after the update. Looking at this thread it looks like I should have put an EFI card back in before doing all this. Am I hosed or is there something else I could do to fix this? Should have come here before updating!

What's your current BootROM?

No idea, I can’t see anything on screen. Is there something I could do at startup so that I could see it?
Boot 10.13.6? You will need to boot High Sierra, you can't troubleshoot without boot screens.

Boot into recovery mode (command R). I thought my blank screen was from the the video card but turned out to be the boot volume due to a weird sip issue. Try booting into recovery to see if you can. Good first step. It will take a while so be patient.

Yea I’m going to have to probably boot 10.13.6 from a USB drive and then reinstall it on another drive with the EFI card installed.

I’m sure the BootROM is the issue since I can’t see anything now.

Ok I’ll try that first, thanks.

What graphics card are you using? When I did my firmware update I removed all drives and all pci cards except the graphics card. Also unplugged all usb devices except keyboard and mouse. Maybe try that if you haven’t.

GTX 680 EVGA FTW 4GB with Mac EFI :)

Just woke up with new ideas and that worked:

-Disconnected my main 4K display only HDMI display left
-Disconnected both ethernet cables
-Disconnected WiFi

And the thing that I think did the trick:
-Disconnected my secondary SATA SSD connected to the second drive bay connector.

After that I was able to use the 10.13.6 installer for the upgrade to 089 and after that the Mojave installer for 138.
Now that's where I'm at I'm considering to wait installing Mojave till 10.14.1.

Thank you guys so much for the suggestions especially @tsialex for offering help, awesome man!

4K displays seems to be a serious problem with the old efiflasher.

Apple corrected this with MP6,1, boot screens work with 4K/DP1.2 with the trashcan, and "forgot" to the same with the MP5,1.

@bokkow I just did the same thing after seeing your post and mine updated, plus I put the GT120 in slot 1, not sure if that mattered. The firmware did update, am downloading mojave (again) now to see if that'll go ahead.

**edit - ROM now updated to 138 and Mojave is installing**

Just installed the latest firmware on one of the studio MacPros 4.1>5.1. This machine was running 10.13.6 with a RX580 Pulse and firmware version 085. I skipped updating the firmware to 089 and ran the Mojave update, it installed flawlessly, so 085>138 worked with no problems here and no swapping of GPUs was required.

Yep, for some configurations just works. But for others, not even with all the first post tips…

Just found out my MP5,1 has BootRom MP51.0084.B00, I installed an RX 580 into it a week ago to get ready for Mojave.

I still have a pair of 5770s but I'm planning on selling them. I also have an ancient ATI X1900 XT, if I do sell my 5770s will that work with my MP5,1 to get a boot screen for emergencies?

No. X1900XT stopped working with 10.7.5.

Edit: correction.

I can't install even though the firmware was updated correctly, here is the error.

"you may not install to this partition because the computer is missing a firmware partition"
Let me reply to my own post, I got around this a weird way. I cloned my MacOS High Sierra partition to an internal secondary drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, and just as I was about to switch out the drives I thought what the heck let me try again installing Mojave. To my surprise no error this time, it just let me do it...very odd.

Did you create a Recovery HD when cloning?

I can also confirm that running on 10.13.6, the 138 firmware works fine and has no ill effect running a Nvidia 1080ti.
I had to install a spare Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition to install the firmware, but after swapping back, all was ok.

No. X1900XT is a EFI32 card.

actually IIRC the X1900 XT is an EBC card so should in *theory* work in a MP5,1 I know for a fact it works fine in a MP3,1 ("famous" youtube dude "its my natural colour" had one in his MP3,1 for a long time)

(of course it wont function properly post 10.7.5)

id actually like to get an X1900 XT or Xserve1,1/2,1 X1300 256MB PCIe BTO card and chuck it in my 5,1 then throw windows in EFI mode at it and watch the drivers utterly Sh*t themselfs trying to figure it all out :)

especially as I read the X1x00 ATI cards dont have a PC VBIOS but Just an EFI, (with the X1900s VBIOS being stored in the MP1,1/2,1s BootROM)

No, I just cloned the drive as is.

See this:
https://bombich.com/print/690
https://bombich.com/print/726

If your clone drive did not have a Recovery HD partition PRIOR to cloning, it may explain the resolution to the firmware update issues. CCC will prompt for a Recovery HD by default if one does not exist. For some reason, several users do not have (updated) Recovery HD partitions on their OS System Drive.
