As I implied in my previous post, I gave up on caseless magnetic qi charging. I went with the iPitaka case combined with the Mophie power station mini charger. See this video. I didn't do the iPitaka charger because I don't like the aesthetics.

What clear case is that, a nd where did you buy it? thanks.

It is The Ranvoo case for iPhone X from Amazon

I find my TPU case with a steel plate on the back will still charge via Qi, but the plate gets extremely hot and very concerning. I stopped charging it after that.

It was hot enough to cause a burn or melt plastic.

That's what i figured. Its in the center of the case on the outside (not on the phone itself).

You want it below the Qi charging coil. It’s also ok to put the plate inside the case. If it’s a clear case, tape to the phone instead of the case.

Thanks for the advice! I'll try it tonight. I have several more plates i can try to strategically place around to avoid this issue.

Hello Sarah

I have the iPitaka case for iPhone X. I like it from a functionality standpoint because it does support both magnetic mounting and qi charging. And I have been using it because it is the only option I found which allows me to use it on a magnetic qi dash mount.

However from an aesthetic standpoint I don't like it because it takes a beautifully designed phone and makes it ugly. If you look at these pics, for the white/silver iPhone X it completely ruins the appearance. The sides look bad because the chrome clashes with the black, and the back is completely unrecognizable.

What would be nice is if you could make a similar case with either a clear back, or a partially clear back which has white metal pieces inside or is opaque to hide the metal pieces. Also make the sides of the case chrome to match the actual iPhone.

Sarah

Here is an example of a case design (another case I also own) which is what I would LOVE to see iPitaka make but with support for qi magnetic charging as well! If you made that it would be THE case to buy out of all cases!

I couldn't find the example case you mentioned. Did I miss anything?
Totally understand your point. But is a matter of the material. Aramid fiber can't be clear. And most clear cases out there are made from plastics/silicone. We got to shift our material. That will be a big change.

If you guys made something full-coverage like this (that would obviously work with your MagMount Qi), that would be awesome.

Can you link to that, because if I do a search for "Mophie power station mini" I get a battery pack, not a magnetic wireless charger.

So I guess that confirms that the magnets are in the base station/mount (or in this case, battery pack). I personally wouldn't be comfortable leaving a battery in my car all the time, mounted in the windshield (since I'll have to superglue or epoxy a ball mount to the back of it).

However, that actually was still a help though. Thank you.

This is what I grabbed, based on following a trail of reviews (I'll be mounting this on my ball mount):

EDIT: The mophie stand came in. It's connection to the Evutec case is laughably bad. It's going back to Amazon.

I have my plate mounted on the bottom, and it works fine with my magnetic mount in portrait, but I like to look at my maps in landscape. The magnet is not strong enough to hold the phone securely in this fashion. I am wondering if adding another plate would do it? Has anyone tried this?

Pitaka case and mount is by far the best I tried, and I tried several...

Yeah. But it’s a case that I’d prefer not to use. Not into carbon fiber and prefer to use the Apple leather folio. I ended up getting iottie magnetic plates and this ended up working for me to a degree.

Sorry for the terrible pictures but wanted to share my solution that seems to work. I just wanted to use my leather folio with my koomas magnetic cd mount. No wireless charging in car yet, but soon maybe.

I use the iottie metal plates which have a shape to not block the conductive area in the center of the phone.

Right now, I have it on the original plastic from the phone I cut down for testing purposes. Works well in both orientations and allows me to wirelessly charge on my pads at work and home. Now that I know it works, I will adhere the plate in a nicer fashion lol.

Does it charge quickly? I am using a qi (non-magnetic) mount right now in my car, and it takes like 20 minutes to increase the charge by 1%.

It doesn’t charge as quick as a cable, but it’s not supposed to.

I found that without the pitaki case, all of the chargers I tried with a magenetic plate was about 20 minutes for 1% at the best. I can’t say that I am aware how fast this one really charges, but At around 50% battery, running gps, it can do 4-5% in 20 minutes at the worst. I think it’s faster than that. The others would actually lose power with the gps running.

Hey, if you’re considering the pitaki, let me know what some things you do on your phone that you have 20 minutes for 1% and I’ll sctually test for you. I basically just trickle charge throughout the day so rarely drop under 90% so that’s why I don’t know for this one...I just remember it being better than the others.

Just today I was driving with music playing via the lightening adapter and six cable, and I may have only gone up 2% in half an hour.

Couple of weeks ago we drove for three hours out of town and had my iPhone o apple maps and apple music playing, the pitaka qi charger was not able to charge the phone but it did keep up with usage, so after three hours i had the same amount of battery left

I’ve generally noticed that it keeps it about where it’s at, over all. I think for a situation where I need to charge, I’d go with wired charging. Out of curiosity, what sort of charger at you using? I’ve got mine plugged into the QC 3.0 port of a 2-port Anker. The other port is just regular 2.4 amps.

Hi jeepik,
which phone you were using? And what cable and adapter were working with our charger?

Something might be wrong with your charger, adapter, or cable. I have a complete opposite experience. It’s not as fast as a cable but does more than 2% in 30 minutes.
