I thought I read that they were going to support it so it should be working although I've heard that NFC was not yet enabled on the iSC250's yet. But hey they could have recently enabled it!

To clarify, you're referring to Domino's, right? Not Home Depot?

Yes I was talking about Domino's as Home Depots ctls support seems to have went nowhere and same with Target.

Drove by my local Meijer here in Findlay, Ohio the other day and saw them ripping out every single pump and installing new ones. Drove by again tonight and they're up and running on brand new Wayne pumps (I believe they are the Wayne Ovation2 to be specific) with NFC at the pump - you can see the green LED for the contactless pad from the street!

Still no luck with an update on Kroger - a shame, really. Meijer is the only grocery store in town that supports Apple Pay - but they're also more expensive to shop at compared to Walmart and Kroger.

Switched banks today (well, Friday, now that it's past midnight) from USAA to Chase, I won't have a debit card for a week... so I can't go out and check new places for compatibility (yet).

Can't pay my barber via Apple Pay + Chase Debit like in that ad Chase aired back in 2014 either, cash or check only. :p

Really annoyed to find the college I go to in Toledo doesn't have NFC on their Coca-Cola vending machines, it's Cash or swipe your student ID only.

My dream list of Apple Pay supporting places:

Kroger
Walmart
Tim Hortons
BK
Taco Bell
Wendy's
Shell
Lowe's
Menards
Target
Dillard's
Speedway

If those places (a lot of which are part of the stupid/dead MCX) got on board in addition to the places that already support it, I think I could get by with NFC payments at least 98% of the time I go to use my card.

Hell, I'd be satisfied with just Kroger/Walmart and Shell.

Tim Hortons is still a no go. Really strange, as when I asked the cashier to let me see if it would work and he hit "credit", the message "Tap or Swipe Card" with a giant contactless symbol popped up on their VX820.

But it declined. I tried two different cards - Chase Debit (VISA) and Simple (VISA). Ended up having to swipe my Chase debit card (no EMV either).

Thought it was funny that my Chase Debit card was declined via NFC on a Chase Paymentech reader. :p

Oh well, hopefully it'll work soon. Supposedly Tim's NFC is configured for Host Card Emulation (according to my Google-fu), something Apple Pay obviously doesn't do.

Oddly enough, Tim Hortons uses the exact same VX820s at their Canadian locations and Apple Pay works fantastically, even with my U.S. cards. It even worked before Apple Pay officially launched in Canada was still U.S. only... I use Apple Pay every single time I'm in Canada for almost every single transaction. It's amazing how much more NFC friendly they are.

I thought I'd add that Finish Line seems to be working...ours had two Verifone readers...seem to be transitioning from the little Subway/mom & pop-style readers to mx915s since they had both side by side.

Hardee's didn't work for me either, but within a month they fixed it and it now works great. So maybe Tims will soon fix it and it will work again and if its been broken for awhile then I'd complain about and it hopefully they will fix it.

It's been this way for quite some time, IIRC. If you tweet them or email them about it, they won't respond and just ignore you as if they don't want to comment on it.

Went to a BP (Barney's Convenience Mart) in Toledo, OH today and NFC payments did not function whatsoever. PIN pad was a Verifone MX915. Clerk claimed it worked earlier, but they did a "software update" this morning that must've broken it or that only corporate BP stations have NFC.

FWIW, it works flawlessly at the BP here in my town - which is a franchise (Hy-Miler). Their equipment was pretty old - Verifone MX850 with the little stick-on NFC pad at the top - but it worked great.

They've been closed since yesterday, and I noticed they've put out of service tags on all the pumps. I think they're finally doing a rip-and-replace, as their gasoline pumps were ancient and most certainly wouldn't support EMV. I'm hoping for NFC at the pump, but will be happy if they just leave NFC enabled on the PIN pad inside. I've noticed a lot of business will upgrade to NFC capable hardware (cough cough Speedway cough cough) and then disable it or refuse to enable it to begin with.

EDIT 2: Stopped in (to my local BP) before hitting the road today. They did not rip and replace pumps, but replaced just the payment processing portion of the pumps with a retrofit kit that supports EMV. In the store, they have all new PIN pads (MX915s) and a POS system. The company they hired to do it was still there when I stopped in. I bought a water and tapped my Watch, hoping they still had NFC enabled. When my watch vibrated, I breathed a sigh of relief. The lady who cashed me out (who worked for the payment company) and all the actual gas station clerks (manager too!) totally freaked out.

I explained what NFC payments and Apple Pay are, and the advantages of using it. Then I told them what the chip on our cards does and why it's good, and that I was very happy they had NFC enabled on the new PIN pads. I even got to talk to the lead project guy and he told me why most gas stations with these retrofit kits (including this station) aren't accepting EMV at the pump even though the support is there -- apparently they're still waiting for the software to be delivered, and the gas stations are wanting to get this done ASAP because of the EMV liability shift for gas stations coming this time next year.

All-in-all, pretty cool. I tweeted Speedway and nagged them for having no NFC. They said "not planned" and I nagged them again for having MX915s and how it's just a software setting they enable. Supposedly they're "passing it onto their IT team" for feedback and consideration.

BP uses either Verifone Ruby Super(Old, built in keyboard) or Commander(New, touchscreen) usually and some even use Gilbarco Passport(touchscreen). Ones with MX915's/MX850's use Verifone pos and I had issues with BP Ruby Super with MX915's when it half worked and the transaction declined while with the newer Commander system it would work. Of course the decline at BP could have been them attempting to run it as debit and having it fail big time. There is an exception to this which an unbranded gas station called Fill R Up that has Ruby Super and MX915's and NFC works great there which is very odd as that setup never works at branded station but can only be run as credit as debit causes it to decline. The receipt shows "#######CONTACTLESS#######" on it so you know that its enabled on purpose. Much older MX850's BP's do work 100% with contactless and the MX915's have issues usually when you mix old/new stuff. All major brand gas stations are indeed waiting for the software and hopefully once EMV is enabled inside contactless is kept on. Sinclair, Cenex, Conoco/Phillips 66, and Valero all decline when you try to use contactless on Ruby Super and MX915's but works if the system is upgraded to Commander. I even saw Gilbarco Passport with EMV and NFC enabled but only got the please insert card error when I tapped so that is just messed up.

Speedway uses Radiant hardware/software which is owned by NCR and once EMV is enabled NFC should still work as I know of Goodwill with EMV+NFC on Radiant hardware and NCR Counterpoint software. Almost all systems running on NCR software have kept NFC once EMV is enabled. Oh and Speedway has said it was in the works on earlier tweets.

Wow, lots of info! Thank you!

Personally, I want Shell to get NFC at their stations as I use their gas exclusively, but considering they were an MCX member my expectations are extremely low.

Speedway would just be nice because they are by far one of the most common (if not the most common) gas station/convienence store brands in NW Ohio (which makes sense, as their HQ is in Enon, OH and they have ties to Marathon, which is headquartered right here in Findlay) so having NFC there would be fantastic just because if I want a hot dog or a bottle of water while on the road, chances are the next exit will more than likely have a Speedway. They dominate here.

The MX850 at my BP worked beautifully, and it still works on the MX915 - which is likely chalked up to the fact they also have a brand-new touchscreen POS system that is tied into it.

That also likely explains why NFC at the BP in Toledo didn't work. They had an MX915, but did *NOT* have a new POS system. I think it was a touchscreen setup, but it definitely wasn't the setup at BP here in Findlay.

I don't know if Debit NFC works here or not, I've always hit credit when asked (on the MX850). When I went in the other day right after they had the MX915s installed, they said they couldn't process any debit yet and were credit-only. It worked fine.

I'll have to stop back today and buy something on a debit and see if it asks for my PIN.

I'm contacting Apple and asking them for a bulk shipment of Apple Pay stickers. I'm going to go around town and do a survey to see what business accept and don't accept it. If they accept it and didn't even know, I'll be able to give them an Apple Pay sticker to put on their door to spread awareness.

Shell does have NFC enabled but only Amex Apple/Android Pay or the grandfathered Android Pay MasterCard works all other cards comes up with "DECLINED" on the screen of the MX915 and it does that on both Commander and Passport Shell systems so its dumb. You can try debit at BP but in my experience 9/10 times it will decline it so credit is your best bet.

Another success today! This time at a local small business - the butcher! Miller's Meats here in Findlay. I saw it listed in the MasterCard Nearby app and was skeptical. But they do it! They're using a First Data FD130 Duo with what appears to be an FD35 PIN pad that does EMV and Contactless. Worked great with my grandfather's Fifth Third Debit MasterCard. :)

I asked them if they'd like to me bring them an Apple Pay sticker to put on their door - they said yes! I emailed Apple today asking for a batch shipment of stickers... hopefully they oblige.

None of my local Shell gas stations have NFC. Even the ones with modern PIN pads do not.

BP (at least the one by my house) has NFC enabled on their MX915 - the one I am talking about. No clue about the other BPs in town.

Shell does not have NFC enabled in any form or fashion at all.

Speedway has the hardware but it is not enabled.

Mobil has their meh Speedpass+ app that's a bit of a pain.

Meijer has NFC at the pump and inside at both gas station and grocery store.

The Marathon stations here that are Circle K branded have NFC but it isn't advertised.

There is another Marathon that isn't a Circle K with NFC installed at the gas pumps, but it is the only one like that.

Used Apple Pay today at a Marathon station. OH BOY.

They have it at the pump and it is BLISTERINGLY fast.

I tapped my iPhone and before my iPhone could even finish the animation for the check mark appearing on screen, the pump was authorized and asking me to select a grade. It was almost as instantaneous as instantaneous can be.

Its so ironic that Speedway is owned by Marathon yet the latter supports Contactless and the former doesn't what in the heck? Very nice that you have seen ctls at the pump as I have not ever seen that.

That's exactly why I grilled them.

As I've mentioned, I live in Findlay - where Marathon is HQ'd. I could hop in my car and drive five minutes to downtown and see their massive campus and all the construction they're doing (they decided they needed a bunch of parking garages, a hotel, and some other buildings).

However, none of the Marathon stations in Findlay are corporate stores. They're all franchises or independently owned. Most of them are Circle K stations (which have NFC inside). There are two (I think it's two) stations that aren't Circle K branded, in fact they're just branded Marathon. One of them has NFC at the gas pump and inside. The owner of that store said they're not a franchise, I guess some guy runs the store?

The other store does NOT have NFC at the pump, and I don't believe it has NFC inside either (although they do have MX915s). They're also independently owned (I believe), considering they're not branded Circle K or anything, just Marathon.

Speedway is owned by Marathon, but yet Speedway's website says they are HQ'd in Enon - down by Dayton, not in Findlay at Marathon's building.

However, from what I understand, Marathon has close to full (if not 100%) control over them.

I don't think I've seen a corporate owned Marathon station in my life, come to think of it. I think Marathon themselves likely doesn't have a position on NFC, they just leave it up to the store owners and franchisees.

EDIT: Tried Walmart Pay today. Wow, is it bloody awful. It takes way more steps than Apple Pay and boy is it SLOW.

I could've just double-clicked the button on my Watch and tapped the PIN pad in about 5 seconds.

Instead, I had to:

- Get iPhone
- Unlock iPhone
- Navigate to folder with app
- Open app
- Tap Walmart Pay
- Wait 5 seconds for Touch ID, then login
- Scan QR code
- Wait 30-40 seconds for app to push info to POS, and for it to recognize

Into the trash their app goes. But not before I delete my VISA info, as it's only a matter of time before their server is hacked like CurrentC.

Another Edit: Went to Menards today (19 October) and was surprised to see they have all new PIN pads - Verifone MX925s - the ones with the giant screens. So, Menards has NFC-capable hardware now... it's just a matter of them turning it on...

The safeway near me recently installed brand new NFC capable terminals (MX9xx).

Anyone know if there are plans to enable it?

I wouldn't hold your breath. This is the same chain that had "insert or swipe card" showing on their non-EMV capable terminals for months and has apparently decided to get rid of self-checkouts altogether instead of trying to get them to work with chip.

Meijer saved the day. Drove 50 miles to Toledo, my low fuel light came on. Stopped at a Shell, went to get my wallet annnnnnd my pocket was empty. Left my wallet on my dresser.

Found a Meijer and they had NFC at the pump. Saved the day.

Although, I was kinda annoyed. The pump asked me if I wanted credit or debit, and then made me enter my ZIP code for "protection."

OTOH, the Marathon here in Findlay with NFC at the pump - you tap your phone and it just instantly asks you to select a grade. No fussing.

So today I forgot my wallet when I went to Hardee's but luckily they fixed their pinpads to allow Contactless to work so I could pay with my phone. At least Meijer has it at the pump as I have never seen it at the pump and I bet they both use different pos systems which is why one asks for crap while the other doesn't.

I just put in a request for Apple Pay Stickers for this reason. 2 of the last 3 local businesses I visited didn't know they accepted NFC payments. I hope they send them to me to distribute.

I've yet to get a reply. Don't know if that's normal... or if they decided not to give me stickers, but didn't even want to send me a "no" and just dragged my email to the trash.

Ace Hardware in Fairborn Ohio started to accept AP. One more retailer I use regular. We need Krogers to start accepting it.

I'm absolutely freakin' desperate for Kroger to start accepting it. I'm sick of going to Meijer and paying more for groceries. Walmart is the absolute cheapest, but I absolutely refuse to support the Walton family (I'll leave politics out of this thread). Kroger is still cheaper than Meijer, and I find Kroger to be a nicer store. One of our two Krogers was renovated this year... it's so nice inside. They have MX915's at every single POS terminal in the store, so Apple Pay can be done.

Interestingly enough, MasterCard's Nearby app says contactless is accepted at that particular store. But it doesn't work.

As I had mentioned earlier... if we can get Kroger and at least a major gas brand in the Midwest (Speedway, Marathon, BP, or Shell) to accept Apple Pay (at the pump, in the case of gas stations)... I will be able to use NFC for at least 90% of all of my transactions, and I would be absolutely thrilled.

I use Apple Pay darn near every single time I buy something in Canada. We need that kind of infrastructure here at home in the United States, too.
