Random. Do you need to have spoofing on to boot into Big Sur after install?
i upgrade from RC 1 and just direct update . I am using H9826790 hardware acc standard config file only. like RC 1 update. nothing need to do.

I haven't tried with spoofing the iMacPro.
But it should work though, I will try that and report ASAP.
I'm curious... did they remove the check from the installer? Could you just install it without the no_compat_check boot arg on a mac pro 5,1 (assuming you have a GPU that supports Metal).

You have to replace CCCOMA_x64 by the actual name of the volume that you see after mounting the ISO. Also, you have to use the name of your USB drive.
The name of the ISO file is Windows.iso.

When I double click it I get a mounted disk called ESD-ISO.

How do I get that onto the USB stick in a form that makes the USB stick bootable?

Thanks for the help.

Big Sur will be officially released on Nov 12, what do we need to do to upgrade? @cdf if possible please provide also instructions for an USB stick Big Sur clean install. I will want to start everything fresh, with such major OS change.
If the traditional method to make MacOS USB installer still work with the Bug Sur official release.

Then I expect all you need to do is just boot to OpenCore boot picker, select to boot into that USB installer, then do the normal MacOS installation.

Of course, if you want / need to format a hard drive, you should NOT put OpenCore onto that hard drive. You can keep OpenCore on another hard drive, or even another USB thumb drive.

I have a standard setup, running Mojave on Disk A and Catalina with OC blessed on Disk B. Will I need to format the B hard drive, if is currently formatted as APFS?

Code:
$ diskutil list disk0
/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):
   #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
   0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB disk0
   1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
   2: Apple_APFS Container disk2 499.9 GB disk0s2

If you do that correctly, only format the APFS partition (or more precise, the container), but not the whole drive B. Then OC should stay, and you can still make a clean Big Sur installation on drive B.

I confirm that each step is strictly in accordance with "PART I Basic Installation", but when enter "nvram 4D1FDA02-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B30102:opencore-version", it prompts Error 'nvram: Error getting variable - '4D1FDA02-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B30102:opencore-version': (iokit/common) data was not found"

They did not remove the check for the installer. If they had, you would just plug the or lunch the install and it would install. Have you tried the method explain on page #1? Yes I have metal graphics.

Good day, Happy Veterans Day.

Win10 install issue: I can't get the ExFat driver to work apparently. Tried two different USB sticks (both ExFat, MBR), different USB ports. ExFatDxeLegacy copied to EFI/OC/Drivers and added to the config, VMM is off, still OC doesn't seem to detect the installer. Any additional steps to take into consideration?

UPDATE: It's not an issue with ExFat, macOS USB installer also doesn't show up in OC. Looks like it's not scanning USB devices at all - any ideas before I start from scratch with vanilla OC? My config is the sample one for 0.6.3+HWaccel+VMM OFF+graphical boot picker so nothing unusual there that would cause USB devices not to appear.

Hi, I am currently running Catalina 10.15.7 and everything works great. Because I do not have upgraded Wi-Fi card, I am injecting using OpenCore IO80211Family.kext extracted from Mojave ( Was anyone successful with only Brcm4331.kext? I do not think it's compatible with other Catalina's kexts in IO80211Family ) and it's stable so far ( Can't boot recovery/installer with IO80211Family enabled though ). Can anyone here confirm that IO80211Family from Mojave is still compatible with Big Sur? Thanks
I will answer myself, installed Big Sur on a second drive and I can confirm ( At least from my testing ) that Mojave's IO80211Family is not compatible with macOS 11.0.1 Beta. Result is kernel panic because IO80211Family is already loaded in prelinked kernel. Maybe if BigSur's gets completely removed from the system, it will work. This guide should work https://medium.com/@andv/making-wif...d-macs-with-failed-with-66-error-36c98e3f7965 but if someone finds OC only solution, definitely share it.

I'm having trouble installing Windows 10 according to these instructions. I've installed OpenCore--and it works fine. Since I have a Nehalem processor, I haven't enabled VMM:

Bash:
Machine:~ username$ sysctl machdep.cpu.features | grep VMM
Machine:~ username$

All the installation instructions for Windows work fine up until the point where I eject the USB stick and reboot. OpenCore shows me my Windows partition in the boot picker. However, when I pick it, the Mac just gets stuck on a gray screen. I'm using the DP output of my RX 580 connected to a 4K Dell monitor. Here's what's in my EFI partition:

Bash:
Machine:EFI username$ tree -h

The lines from 125:171 00:110 are what displays after I pick "Windows". The last entry in the log above is what displays on the screen when the boot process gets stuck.

Also note lines 08:412 00:027 to 08:641 00:027. Those show the process of adding the bless entry for Windows. I don't see anything there that looks amiss.

From my reading of the OpenCore code, InternalLoadBootEntry() is called on BootEntryManagement.c:1923, it prints the last log line at DefaultEntryChoice.c:1180, then my best guess is that InternalLoadBootEntry() returns without an error status and Context->StartImage() is called at BootEntryManagement.c:1931. OcLoadBootEntry returns to OcBootManagementLib.c:687. It looks like it's supposed to play a sound on success or failure--but from the log, it looks like audio is disabled. However, on failure, it looks like it should show the boot picker menu again. I don't know much about EFI code, but I think the context at this point in OcBootManagementLib.c:OcRunBootPicker is an infinite loop looking for key presses (see OcBootManagementLib.c:555). I don't know if the Context->StartImage() call only returns on failure or if OcBootManagementLib.c:OcRunBootPicker runs in its own thread.

Any ideas for further troubleshooting?

I confirm that each step is strictly in accordance with "PART I Basic Installation", but when enter "nvram 4D1FDA02-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B30102:opencore-version", it prompts Error 'nvram: Error getting variable - '4D1FDA02-38C7-4A6A-9CC6-4BCCA8B30102:opencore-version': (iokit/common) data was not found"
You have a space between the ":" and "opencore-version". Remove the space and it should work.

I want to share my experience with OpenCore and Big Sur.

I have updated macOS Catalina with OpenCore 0.6.3 ( downloaded from here and not modified ) to macOS Big Sur in my MacPro 4.1->5.1. The first time I tried it stacked in the "less than one minute" message for hours. I decided to reboot the computer manually and thankfully it resumed the installation from there, so I was finally able to enter the upgraded system.

As I was successful this way, I decided to try a fresh install as I did notice that the system was a little slow. I first tried in a secondary classical spinning drive and all was smooth and perfect. Then I tried to make a fresh install in my main SSD drive for the final install. I completely erased the drive from the Big Sur copy, that I was able to install in the spinning HD, and copied a fresh EFI files to the drive. The first time the computer when down once again and again. So as I had the other installation I decided to erase again the whole SSD from this other drive and install again the EFI folders. This time all was smooth again. Honestly I don't know what happened when I did the first trial over the SSD. Now the system feels fresh and fast as Catalina never was. Goodbye for good, Catalina!!

But not all is perfect. I'm experiencing the sound hangs and crackling sounds I use to have an later Mojave versions. Apple changed something in the last Mojave iterations that caused this "interruptus" sound ( specially with Apple Music or Youtube videos ). When I installed Catalina with OpenCore these problems disappeared and the sound was great again. But now in Big Sur I have the same issue back.

As a workaround in Mojave I used to open Apple Logic and modify the buffer. That used to solve my problem, but it's quite annoying to open all the time an app to make the sound works as expected. In Catalina it was solved, I don't know if via OpenCore or just the system.

So now my question is: Is it any way to solve this issue with the sound via OpenCore again?

Thank you in advanced

I was able to get the ISO image to mount as a disk, with a name CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9.

The exFAT MBR 32 Gb (empty) USB was already in a USB port. It's name was/is: Untitled.

Then I opened the Terminal and typed in: rsync -r /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9/ /Volumes/Untitled

Hit return and waited.

I checked and the USB and it had exactly the same contents as the mounted windows installer - at least by visual inspection.

However, when I rebooted, it did not show up as a bootable option in the boot picker.

Should the USB stick be titled Windows? It is titled Untitled in the Disk Utility and in the Terminal application.

How do I check to see if the USB stick is bootable?

Or have I missed some step previously?

They did not remove the check for the installer. If they had, you would just plug the or lunch the install and it would install. Have you tried the method explain on page #1? Yes I have metal graphics.

Good day, Happy Veterans Day.
No, I haven't bothered... nothing about Big Sur really has me all that excited, and I don't use my mac pro much anymore anyways. I will probably install it at some point and check it out.

Did you opened an issue into acidanthera's bug tracker and provided debug logs as comparative between the two versions? I don't think anyone will be able to help you here with your sound related issues.

Nop, I haven't. I will check it. Thank you :)

When you plug the formatted USB into Catalina, does it show as disk into your desktop? I had to fiddle with few USB sticks until I got a good working one, I ended using a $5 16GB Lexar USB 2.0 which made the install perfect. I don't use USB 3.0 flash drives since CMP was not designed for, especially that you use legacy drivers into OC. The OP instructions are proper and they work perfect if you follow them at letter.

Just wondering since I don't think I ever saw an answer, but I have OC 0.6.3 and have been running OC with a base config for some time now on a native Mojave install. To update the machine to Catalina, is it necessary to have a whole other drive configured for the purpose as stated or can Mojave be upgraded by toggling the respective flags in OC? Seems a little basic, but Id rather not go about restoring backups from one drive to another since Catalina would be the daily driver anyway. Thanks in advance and if this has been answered, feel free to point it out.

Maybe something changed in 0.6.3 (or the default config*) that makes booting from USB impossible, but i checked a few different USB sticks both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 on different ports and none are detected in OC, neither Win10 nor macOS installers. Ended up making an installer out of an internal HDD... and it worked great. Also i formatted it with GUID not MBR so maybe that was the culprit. All the Win10 USB sticks were MBR as per instructions.

(*) I haven't been able to interpret the documentation properly yet, but in "Security Properties" section there's a flag called ScanPolicy and the default config provided in this Wiki has a value of "0" and failsafe is "0x10F0103", but i don't know how the combination of different device types works here. (page 45 of the configuration PDF)

EDIT:
Note: Given the above description, 0xF0103 value is expected to allow scanning of SATA, SAS, SCSI, and NVMe devices with APFS file system, and prevent scanning of any devices with HFS or FAT32 file systems in addition to not scanning APFS file systems on USB, CD, and FireWire drives. The combination reads as:
• OC_SCAN_FILE_SYSTEM_LOCK
• OC_SCAN_DEVICE_LOCK
• OC_SCAN_ALLOW_FS_APFS
• OC_SCAN_ALLOW_DEVICE_SATA
• OC_SCAN_ALLOW_DEVICE_SASEX
• OC_SCAN_ALLOW_DEVICE_SCSI
• OC_SCAN_ALLOW_DEVICE_NVME
Not sure how "0" is interpreted then(i have no clue about bitmasks), but if the above is the default ScanPolicy then it lacks OC_SCAN_ALLOW_DEVICE_USB
