Actually after testing this. I can say that it seems to work fine so far, except if there's an external monitor attached which causes it to crash within a couple of minutes.

I installed gfxcardstatus, but it seems as if it won't let you only pick one card to stick with. It keeps switching, if you open FCPX say.

I everyone, for an unknowed reason, email notification was disable for this thread, I didn't see all your posts.
Great to see it saves people the cost of a MacBook Pro :).

The application works great on High Sierra for me.

For information, the patch does works if an external monitor is plugged, see details here : https://github.com/julian-poidevin/MBPMid2010_GPUFix/blob/master/FAQ.md#troubleshooting

HI everyone, unfortunately the problem for my macbook pro has gotten worse, and now any kind of strenuous activity causes it to switch off, not just FCPX now. I'll look into replacing the capacitor in the near future. Does anyone have a price they paid for having this done? Or a place you could recommend in the UK?

MBPMid2010_GPUFix is an utility program that allows to fix MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) intermittent black screen or loss of video. The algorithm is based on a solution provided by user fabioroberto on MacRumors forums.

The utility is based on Qt Framework and only available on OSX.

What is this GPU bug ?
MacBook Pro's from Mid-2010 (MacBook6,2) suffers from GPU issues. This is a known problem from Apple. Basically, a kernel panic is triggered randomly while using the computer.

What is the solution ?
A software fix as been found by fabioroberto on this thread.
My software provides an automated way to apply this fix.

Hi Julian, Many thanks for this great piece of software! I installed it with ease and haven't had a crash yet!

I experienced the kernel panic bug, but decided to change the capacitor first to see if it would resolve it.

@julian-poidevin I'm about to try it out, but just before that are you aware whether the fix is applicable to a 2012 15 with the NVidia 660? It's also occasionally kernel panicking/black screening

I'm sorry but the application won't let you patch if you don't have the correct macbook pro version. The kernel panic on the 2012 is caused by an other reason. Since I don't have a machine to test the software, I prefer not to let users modify their kernel with my patch.

OK, good to clarify with you before actually attempting and then posting stupid troubleshooting "why is this not working....".

Thank you anyway for your contribution to the community!

I tested this on my MacBook Pro 15" i5 Mid-2010 running High Sierra 10.13.2 that was randomly shutting down with a GPU panic. I was able to reproduce the the shutdown by running Cinebench's OpenGL test, this would near instantly kill the machine.

I ran Cinebench again and played 1080p+ 60fps videos on YouTube after applying this fix... so far so good. Everything is running and no crashing. I've also tested an external monitor with no issues. Is this likely to continue or should I also go for a hardware fix?

I also tested gfxCardStatus before this, but that was pretty bad. Certain apps can't run in Integrated mode and it will randomly switch modes when needed, thus causing a crash. And Cinebench was unable to start in Integrated mode. So this seems to be working much better.

I decided to approach my Macbook 15" 2010 kernel panic problem from a hardware standpoint by replacing the faulty capacitor which resolved my kernel issues, although some have successfully fixed it through software as well. No software modifications were necessary after replacing the faulty capacitor, so it's a matter of preference.

[doublepost=1514428266][/doublepost]Can anyone actually help me step-by-step?
I don't want/can't afford a new computer & I'm having nothing but problems trying to so-called 'fixes'
:(

Hello,

Does the MBPMid2010-GPU-Fix-0.6.0.dmg solution work smoothly for High Sierra update?
I'm wondering if I update it or not.

Thank you,

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)
Version: 10.12.6 (16G1114)

Don't bother.
It didn't work for me...
I need someone to help, cause these 'solutions' don't work at all

Contact me if you consider going the hardware fix route.
[doublepost=1516476993][/doublepost]I’m new to this thread but I have this problem on my mid-2010 MBP which my son gave me a few years ago. The screen black, shutting down, etc. i’m Still using OS X 10.7.5 and see many in this thread are well beyond that so I ask will this “app” work on an older OS X. I’m not really experienced with using OS X as I primarily use win 7 with Bootcamp 3.1. So, will this solution work to solve these “panic” shutdowns in Bootcamp?

Can't get your app to run, must be doing something wrong but don't know what. I've tried both the dmg and zipped version of this app but neither will run. The zipped version errors with "MBPMid2010-GPU-Fix-0.6.0 quit unexpectedly.", and the dmg version errors with "...no mountable file system". I'm not very savvy with Macos, most a Win 7 user on Bootcamp. Can you help me getting your app to work on my MBP mid-2010 using Osx 10.7.5?

I had this problem starting in February 2017, it got worse around September 2017, I think High Sierra may have done that, but since 10.13.2 it has become far more stable.

Crashes seemed to be caused by software: opening Slack, Firefox developer updating in the background.

I had read up about the dodgy capacitor for the Nvidia board, and had thought about getting it fixed, but it seems far, far better now.

Finder, and Quicktime keep crashing when looking at videos, so that may be a new software bug.

I aim to shut down at night, and it occasionally crashes during the day.

This does seem to rule out the capacitor issue, I was prepared to disable the graphics card if possible, but that doesn't seem to have been the problem, it looks like it was a Sierra issue, and more so with High Sierra.

However it looks like my MacBook 6.2, 2010 will be made obsolete soon, I doubt there'll be any official 10.14 for this...

I had the same problem, old mac on 10.10 actually with yosemite. You need to download gfxstatus 1.8.1. I've had that for a couple years now, computer doesn't restart anymore. https://gfxcardstatus.en.softonic.com/mac

This old version of gfxstatus is the only thing that has worked for me, the new versions don't. When you download this, set the program to Intel Only. Bam--no more resets. I only use my old laptop for browsing and other basic functions, i think you may run into problems if youre trying to graphic intensive things, but even basic art programs function fine. It only messes up if you try to do crazy 3d work or something as far as i know. It's worked like a charm.

Hello, tried to install this and got:

gfxCardStatus was not running at the time.

The previous version worked well but the latest gfx version keeps switching even after 'i' is selected, and then the mbp reboots. Seems to defeat the whole purpose of the fix.

Thanks for any help or advice.

Hmm, are you using gfx 1.8.1? That is the old version, and the only one that works. The latest version of gfx doesn't do squat to fix this problem.

No I made the mistake of upgrading to gfx latest 2.3 version and then never was able to find the link to the older version.
Just downloaded 1.8.1 and so happy to see the 'n' option again! I guess problem solved.
Was hoping the kernel fix would be more efficient but that doesn't seem to work.
Thanks for advice.

No worries, i've been using that fix for a couple years now so i can say with surety that it's worked all this time without any problems.

First of all, thank you very much. I did the procedure however he still introduces the kernel. I'm at the Mavericks. Can you tell me if I can do anything yet?

I posted on here mid-last year sometime, as I was having the same issue. Has there been any changes to the issue since then? I tried the program linked to on on here, and tried changing the different videocard (?) switching but it couldn't force the use of one, it just told you when it changed.

But still the issue is still happening. Is soldering the mother board the only fix left?
