After a year of drooling over the iPhone I picked up a lightly used 2g 8Gb one.
I jailbreaked, unlocked, and activated it in under 30 mins, I then took it in to my local T-Mobile store and the rep there set up the settings for using the 5.99$ internet plan....running 2.0.1 right now as smooth as can be...wish I hadn't waited so long to do this....but another problem arose I wasn't expecting....my wife started to play with my new iPhone....after about 5 minutes she looks at me and says "I gotta have one of these".... so on the lookout I went and picked up a 2g 4GB for here...took me only 20 minutes to get hers set up...now I'm out close to 500$ for both phones in all... but dang it's easily the best phone you could run on T-Mobile...:p;)

Same boat here. I was waiting for 3G and realized I have to buy data bundle(~$100) so I picked up used 8G. Works like a charm with T-zone hack. wish I bought a new one when I had a chance.

Haha

ARIZZ,

The only thing I can suggest doing is restoring and re-unlocking. I wish I could help out more, but I really can't :/ I hope you get it working again. If all else fails, take it to your local apple store! Let us know what the problem is if you manage to get it working.

AND You guys aren't alone on that note about buying iphones.

My friends told me not to get one because it was 'a waste of money'. But I waited, then with the announce of the 3g, I had to get one and I knew I wouldn't be able to get one, with those lines and all, SO, i got my friends' mom's when she upgraded to the 3g and I LOVE IT! Now, all my friends want them, so i just whip out mine, play some fun games while they are watching, and declare, its not worth it, its a waste of money. lol NOT AT ALL!!

And I mean I had to get a 3g but I wouldn't be able to (with tmobile) so my friends mom upgraded and I got her 2g iphone.

I'm going to get a T-Mobile Prepaid SIM for use in my old 1st Gen iPhone. I can't see the $5.99 data plan people are talking about on their website. Does anyone know what the cheapest way to get unlimited data on Prepaid on T-Mobile is? Thanks!

Actually

I may be wrong here so you may have to go in and just talk to tmobile. They aren't going to ban you from their store. A customer is a customer.

BUT concerning your 5.99 internet; I think you may be able to get a dataplan for a go phone, but I think it is by amount of data transferred. SO if you paid for 100 minutes (ten dollars or whatever) then 10kilobytes a second of data would take away one minute. I would advise going in to talk to them, they can help the most. Or call their customer care, a lot of times they lie in both places. I went in to a store and asked if I could get a data plan for my iphone and they said it wasn't possible. I called customer care and the same thing. Then, I called back and got a different guy (who was AWESOME). He ended up having an iphone and told me it was possible and the cheapest thing to do was get tzones web plan for 5.99 and hack it. YES, a tmobile REPRESENTATIVE told me that!

What you are looking for on their website is 'T-zones Web plan'

good luck

getting an iphone for t-mobile

i've read a bit about unlocking an iphone for the t-mobile network. how easy is this if i'm not the most saavy tech guy? will i need to buy a new SIM card? should i start with at&t, then cancel after the month? someone on here suggested this about a year ago.

ideally, i would like to purchase the iphone from a mac store and not have to deal with at&t.

thanks

Just buy the iphone, cancel the contract after a month, buy a smart Sim card to hardware unlock your iphone such as(turboSIM, rebel sim, etc)

After that you can go with option:

A.get prepaid from ATT or T-mobile. T-mobile prepaid doesn't give you 3G so ATT prepaid is better. Just put the prepaid sim card and smart sim card such as TurboSIM together and thats it.

B.If you want a monthly plan just put the smart sim card such as TurboSIM in your iPhone and go to ATT/Tmobile store and start a monthly service like any other.

out of luck?

i have been with t-mobile since 2002 and already have a monthly contract with them. will hooking up the iphone work if i'm already a t-mobile customer> also, i have all of my contacts on my current SIM card. i won't be able to use that SIM?

Just pop-in the SIM card and you're good to go. The new firmware has an option that lets your transfer your SIM contacts onto the iPhone.

Hey, I just read your thing about if unlocking is easy.

I would recommend getting the 2g iphone and then using a software unlock (pwnage tool for mac or winpwn for windows) Software unlocks (in my opinion) are a lot more reliable than a hardware unlock. The 3g hasn't been software unlocked yet, and I don't really trust turbosim and those things (but then again I have had no experience with them, maybe they work great). IF you decide to go my route, the unlocking process is SO simple. The programs will pretty much do it for you. And if you get confused there are video walkthroughs online (like youtube).

Also, once you unlock it, I would not recommend putting your sim in right away (the phone doesn't need a sim card in the phone to be unlocked). I would copy all of your contacts onto microsoft outlook. When I put my sim in my phone, all my numbers were deleted. BUT after you unlock the phone, it will ask you to set it up and asks you to sync, one of which is 'sync contacts from outlook' then your contacts will be on the phone, just in case they do get deleted.

Good luck

Question with sidekick plan

I currently have the myfaves 300 plan and sidekick unlimited plan...
My question is i have a 16gb iphone that i just unlocked. if i were to put my tmobile sim card in it, would i be charged for making calls, texting etc. since i have a sidekick unlimited plan?

Im aware the internet wont work which is fine right now, im just wandering about texting and calling on it.

Thank you.

i

I wish I could help but you've stumped me on that one! I would suggest calling their customer care (its just 611 from a tmobile device) but for the (free) 800 number, you'll have to get on their website. Just ask them your question. Then you wont have to wait for responses from us.

i can ask tmobile that? wow i didnt know that, i always thought doing this with and iphone was against a tos or something like that... haha

well ill give tmobile a call! thanks!

See, I like tmobile because I'm a 17 year old kid. When I go in their stores, wherever that may be (local, the mall kiosks, canada) they are ALWAYS so polite with me. They actually treat me with respect. Unlike cingular, they ask why I'm not in school, which I wouldn't mind if the comment wasn't some snide remark. They've even told me I can't be in the store without my parents. I got real mad at that. I told them that I look rather young for my age but I'm actually 19 with my own plan and I don't need parents/adult with me. He didn't even apologize! Ridiculous.

But yes, ask them the question, and they will tell you what can/can't work with iphone on tmobile. They were the ones who told me to get the 5.99 tzones web and hack it. The customer care guy ended up having an iphone too.

Guys i had a couple of question , the 3G can be ulocked and jailbroken to use T mobile correct? Can i just got any apple store or bestbuy and buy the phone without any hassle or having to go with att? Another thing the whole favorites with t-mobile does it still work?? like the icons display? If not where can i get a used previous gen phone. Thanks

To get a 3g:

The only way to get a 3g (which can only be jailbroken, but not unlocked...yet) is either pay for a month of service through at&t and wait a month before cancelling (if you cancel within the first month, they take the phone back).

Other ways are to try ebay, that is if you don't mind spending a fortune. Likely to be sold for $1,000 yes, one-thousand, not one-hundred. Other sites do offer sales, but don't trust wholesale sites, as they are likely to be fakes, even if they contact you. I got on craigslist one time and someone said they'd sold their phone but to check out some wholesale site, but I do hardcore research and everyone said it was a fake.

You could wait till a friend doesn't want theirs anymore and by it off of them.

2g/EDGE Iphone:

Really, the same concept applies. (they still sell them here in Washington, Idk about anywhere else).

Ebay, craigslist. BUT you are still likely to spend a fortune as these are somewhat at a higher demand because they CAN be unlocked.

I told my friend how I was trying to get one off craigslist and he said his mom was upgrading to the 3g and I could buy hers (he'd already sold his old one for the 3g).

LASTLY, this is what another friend of mine did. You could do this as well, it works. Have 250 - 300 dollars in cash and go to your local apple store. Sit outside or go inside and talk to all the people purchasing the 3g. Tell them you have cash and they wouldn't have to spend any money of their own because the prices only range from 200 to 300. (minus tax) And just beg. He got one that had a few scratches on the back, no big deal for him, for about 175.

Good luck; you really have to get one...smartest/best invention EVER made.

sounds pretty cool i'll see how i can get my hands on one.. One question to those of you who have unlocked the phones. When i download the 2.1 ispw and unzip it, it turns out to have several other files inside including three dmg's?? is this correct doesn't the extension need to be ispw?? Thanks

WHOA I don't know where you are downloading from but I have never had dmg's or even a .zip folder. But to unlock 2.1, I had 2.0.2 unlocked then hit update to 2.1 I didn't download the 2.1 firmware, itunes did.

3G On T-Mobile UK

Finally back from Italy with my unlocked 16GB 3G :D . Funnily enough, didn't have to enter anything to get up and running. Plugged into iTunes to activate and SMS and 3G data worked right off the bat. Will be keeping an eye on my bill just in case I'm using the wrong SMS center / APN and getting charged but seems all good so far.

Ran some rudimentary tests with my work mate who's got a 3G on O2. Smashed it every time and averaged out to be twice as quick ;) T-Mobile coverage outside of London isn't brilliant but it's network performance in it is pretty hoofing :D

Ziphone will only work if you are trying to unlock 1.1.4. I have never used it as I got my iphone already at 2.0. BUT, I would suggest putting it into dfu mode and recover to 2.0.2 or lower if you can. Download itunes 7.7 and winpwn 2.5 (or pwnage tool for mac) and then unlock it from there. Don't try updating to 2.1 and trying to keep the unlock. Too many people are having too many problems. You can update to IF you have a mac because the new pwnage tool is out but if you are on windows, just wait till winpwn 3.0 comes out.

Best of luck.

A quick edit to my last post. If you want to UNLOCK and JAILBREAK your phone at the same time, all you will have to do is download itunes 8 and hit update to 2.1. (this should transfer the unlock, if it does, use quickpwn 2.1 to jailbreak it and if it doesn't, use quickpwn 2.1 and select the 'unlock iphone' check box). you will still need to download the 2.1 firmware. THE UNLOCK DOES NOT WORK FOR THE 3G iphone. So please, save yourself from misery and don't try it.
