I wrote all this but didn't read that you have a mac, so instead of quickpwn 2.1, download pwnage tool. I don't know how to use that, as I have windows, but a simple youtube search of 'pwnage tool unlock 2.1' or something should show you how. It is esssentially the same process as this, but you don't have to be on 2.1, pwnage has quickpwn (something similar) which doesn't need you to build a whole new custom firmware, but if you can't update to 2.1, it also has the ability to make a new custom firmware. So I take it that you HAVE tried updating to 2.1 already and the unlock didn't follow through? FOR THIS TO WORK, YOU HAVE TO BE ON 2.1, IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE UNLOCKED, BUT IT HAS TO BE ON 2.1. It WILL NOT unlock the iphone 3g so if thats what you have, don't try it. What you will have to do, is download the 2.1 firmware (even though you should be on 2.1, you still need it the file), download the 3.9 AND 4.6 bootloaders, then download quickpwn 2.1. (go to www.ipodtouched.net and scroll down to september 20th for quickpwn. Go to the downloads section at the top for the firmware and bootloaders). Connect your phone to the computer and just exit itunes if it pops up. Then, when you open quickpwn, it will automatically determine what you are using (iphone, iphone 3g, ipod touch) and then it will make sure you are already on 2.1. It will then ask you to browse for the 2.1 that you downloaded. Then it will bring you to a selection screen and asks what you want to be put on your phone-cydia, installer, custom boot logos, AND unlock phone. Check all, or only the ones you want, BUT MAKE SURE YOU SELECT UNLOCK DEVICE. The next screen will then ask you to navigate to the bootloaders that you downloaded and put each one in the designated spot. Then, click next, it will tell you it is preparing your device and will prompt you to put in dfu mode, it has a timer so you don't have to count. It will say hold home button for 5 seconds, home and power for 10 seconds, and the hold home for 30 sec, BUT HOLD THE HOME BUTTON UNTIL YOUR IPHONE FLASHES AND HAS A PICTURE OF AN ARROW AND A HARD DRIVE AND SAYS ITS DOWNLOADING JAILBREAK DATA, THEN LET GO. After it does the jailbreak data, (15 min or so), it will run bootneuter (unlocks your phone), just let it do its thing and the phone will either turn off or just reboot. When it reboots, it should be unlocked and jailbroken, if it turns off, just turn on and it should be unlocked and jailbroken. You don't need to have an at&t sim in it or even your sim in it. It doesn't need a sim in it to be unlocked, I would say just keep your sim in it.
god this is frustrating. ok so no matter what i do i can not get rid of itunes 8 it keeps telling me that the "itunes library" was created in a newer version of itunes so it won't even let 7.7 open. It looks like everyone is having this problem. now, the kid that had the phone before me reset it so it all locked back up so i still need to activate it as well. can i just put my roomates sim card in my phone to activate it? does all this mean that when i go through the unlocks should i be using (if i ever get that far) the unlock codes for the first gen (which is what i have) or the 3G (since im assuming this has 2.1 software)? assuming it has 2.1 because it needs to be activated .
If you activate it with your friends card, it should work, but then when you put your sim card in, it will say not recognized then, continue with the unlock process.
I dont know what 'unlock codes' are, I have never heard of them. If you activate it with your friends card, just update to 2.1 at the same time. Then put your sim in and run quickpwn 2.1 for windows (pwnage tool for mac). Download bootloaders 3.9 and 4.6 AND the 2.1 firmware even though you've updated already. And run quickpwn, just be sure to check 'unlock device'. Then it should work for you.

OK, I have a 8GB iPhone that I bought off Craigslist last Christmas. I activated it with iBrikr (but didnt unlock as it wasnt possible at the time due to a new bootloader or something like that, I recall plus it wasnt necessary since I am an ATT customer) and have been using it on my regular At&t family plan without internet access (and no required 2 year contract or overpriced data plan!) since. I connect to my WiFi at home or hot spots.
It currently has 1.1.2 (3B48b) and firmware 04.02.13
I have installed 3rd party apps games themes etc, but the installer app doesnt function any more. I never tried to figure out why.
After reading all 12 pages without anything similar to my situation, I wanted to get your opinions.
Is there a program (ziphone) or something that will work easily to unlock? but I also thought I read something about it corrupting files or something? Plus I was curious if there were any new/better ways.
What should I do in this circumstance?

Ok! fun fun fun fun. Are you wanting to unlock it because you want to switch to tmobile? It is possible to unlock, and it's very easy. Since you are using windows, download quickpwn 2.1 Then download the 2.1 update ( you need to have it for the program) and also update your iphone to 2.1. You will also need to download the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders.
This program will jailbreak and/or unlock the phone. So if you don't need it unlocked, you don't need any of this stuff, except the phone still has to be on version 2.1. The program will ask you what you want (checkboxes) and you can click cydia (I like to think of this as the new installer), installer (I don't use this one, so don't know anything about it), or unlock device. If you want to unlock it, make sure you don't, DO NOT, check 'activate phone' in a later screen. Your phone will already be activated as you are on cingular. Someone may correct me about this part, as I have not unlocked a phone to use with cingular/at&t.
Run the program and it will direct you with what you have to do. Just follow the directions. At one point it will have a countdown thing going on. It will say hold home button for 5 seconds, home and sleep/wake/power button for 10, and home again for 30, at this point (hold for 30) HOLD HOME UNTIL THE PHONE FLASHES WHITE AND HAS A PICTURE LABELED 'DOWNLOADING JAILBREAK DATA' then let go. it may be longer than 30 seconds...

YEP I am considering switching to T-Mobile and wanted to know if it was as easy as some people are saying. It wasnt that hard to jailbreak and activate to Att but at the time the unlock thing was VERY complicated. (almost a year ago) The lure of a $6 unlimited data sounds HELLA good compared to the $20/$30 Att one! Plus I have a family plan and the Tmobile has unlimited shared txts for only $15 where ATT is $30 for shared! Plus I can get 300 more minutes (1000) than the 700 I am currently getting for the same price.
The only thing holding me back is I have a FAN discount of 23% off of ATT but only 10% off of Tmobile.
Ill crunch some numbers and compare the work/headache of jailbreak/unlock etc into the equation and see how it works.

Question. Since I have been afraid to update the phone since I jailbroke it (1.1.2) Can I update it to 2.1 , still be jailbroken and still have all my apps/games/themes/ringtones etc? I would like to have the latest updates but just never did cuz I didnt want to have to reinstall or lose what I worked hard to get! Does that make sense? Do I like, backup, then update then transfer settings back somehow? Or what? Does that pwn program keep all my settings/games etc, then update the phone and keep all the stuff I have? Is that possible? or should I restore my phone to 1.1.2 then upgrade/unlock/activate with the program you mention and then install new apps/games etc? Sorry for all the questions, but ive been out of the loop for hacks for almost year! lol
Can anyone share any info on the different networks connection speed on the 1st Gen iPhone? Using the tzone compared to the unlimited media net with att? are they comparable?
So, as a Tmobile fan (and user) myself, running the first generation iPhone on 2.1, I can say, It is SO easy to unlock. I'm only a 17 year old kid, so if I can do it, you can too. If you need help, just personal message me. But if you download the stuff from my last post, you should be fine.

You do need to jailbreak your phone (easily done with quickpwn) and download something from them, then change your 'APN' username to wap.voicestream.com. (I'll help you when you get to that point). Unfortunately, youtube doesn't work, sometimes the app store wont either (but if you are on wifi, they both work flawlessly). I have compared my tmobile edge to my friends at&t edge and another friends 3g iphone. The 3g won but not by much. And edge to edge to edge, it was about a tie. I had 21 seconds, the 3g had 20 seconds, and the other 1st gen iphone had 22 seconds. This was for a big page though, lots of pictures and stuff. Google and small sites don't take as long. Also, on edge, every once in a while I will put in a site, and then after it tries to load, it will pop up with an 'error' message, but I just hit 'reload' and it works fine. As far as wifi goes, the phones were almost identical. About 6 to 7 seconds.

I just unlocked my first gen iPhone last night using firmware 2.1 and unlocked it with quickpwn and i also have the $6.00 internet and it wont work with my phone. Have the APN set to what you posted. Called T-Mobile and they said it would only work with the $19.99 total internet.
What else do i have to add or do to make the $6.00 internet to work? Do i need to download add an application?

T-Mobile reps aren't "in the know". My rep told me the same when I tried adding T-zones. Tell them with authority that it will work.

Found out about epc.tmobile.com recently and its slightly faster. A user tested it and the results were 38% faster which isn't too shabby. Supposedly you're suppose to remove the T-zones hack to have it working but the hack is still present and EDGE works fine. Some users say that this will work for prepaid depending on region.
I have the $5.99 internet and now it works great. I just typed this epc.tmobile.com into the APN and it works now.
I tried the epc.tmobile.com apn, but it didn't seem to work for me; no internet connection at all! But this was a while ago and I have the tzones hack on my phone. I guess I will have to delete it and try it again.

But my house has wifi, so it isn't that big of a deal to me. And at my school, no one gets service anyway. lol so I still wouldn't be able to use the internet (you need reception for it to work). So, the choice is really yours, you can always try it and then try the new one.

pwnage process with quickpwn.
i updated the FW.
ran quickpwn.
no service....with the OEM sim card.
wifi but no phone[to be expected]
i get the plug into itunes screen with my tmobile sim.
tried ziphone, i nearly brickt it, i was able to recover from that fiasco.
what to do now?

So, if you want to use the wap.voicestream.com, you need to go into cydia, and download the tzones hack under (i believe) the 'utilities' or 'tweaks' section. If you go to search, and type in tzones, it should pop up. the 5.99 plan WILL work on tmobile users running iphones. I gues the epc.tmobile.com you don't need the tzones hack. And make sure your APN is either one of those, but your password and username are left blank.

On November 15th Tzones changes to Web2Go and as I understand it will go to data restriction instead of port restriction. 100MB per month.
And it you go over, it bills you for the total internet plan which then will become $25 and $35 (depending on whether you choose 400/Unlimited SMS)
I don't know if Tzones will be grandfathered it... but if they were being gf in, wouldn't the port restrictions still remain active? Sounds like they're getting the servers over to the new plans...

I have yet to hear about this... I talked to tmobile the other day and they were adamant that it wasn't going to happen.
Also, I just wanted to give some detail about the epc.tmobile.com APN.
Everything works when I use this APN instead of wap.voicestream.com, but, the speed seems about the same to me. Also, youtube sucks. The quality on videos is really horrific! but if you want youtube, there you go.

I know, I know, there are probably countless threads (which I searched for and didn't find) about this topic, but I'm really looking for someone that's in this situation.
Just wanted to know, what plan do you have and how did you approach getting this plan? Is it prepaid, etc?

I use the completexl plan on my 3G. I walked in, got the phone, had it activated, and walked out. Quite simple, I think...
