OP your a godsend. I gave up looking at these forums after the 2017 MBP didn't have 32GB option, and randomly came to check it today and checked out this thread.

I ALMOST replaced my battery a few months ago (I went in thinking they would replace it for free since it was under 80% with ~500 cycles at the time...since they advertised at least 1000 cycles when I bought it), so i refused when they told me I had to pay for it.

I just got back for the store today, and played dumb...after he did the battery test (68% @ 780 cycles) genius flat out told me they are out of stock of the top case and are replacing these with 2015 models.

He ended up ordering the top of the line 2015 model (2.8GHz, 16GB RAM, 1TB HD!). This actually worked out even better than I wanted...I actually didn't even want the 2016/17 models (rather have an extra year without dongle hell).

Best part my SSD went from a 512GB SATA drive to a 1TB NVMe drive! Pretty much got a 2k upgrade for 200 bucks lol.

Now I don't feel as bad waiting out for the 2018 model with 32GB ram...maybe even might stretch it out to 2019.

This 2012 MBP has to be on of the best purchases ever with this "fluke" replacement program :D
Did they specify whether or not your new machine will have dedicated graphics?

Yea like I said, he showed me the exact model he placed an order for, and its the maxed out 2015, which has the AMD 370X 2GB (I had the maxed out 2012 with the 650 1GB GPU...so they weren't going to downgrade me).

How long did they estimate for the replacement? Also did they take payment in store? Are you in the US?

Presently sitting in the Apple Store in the UK and he’s just offered me the September free replacement but didn’t mention the refurb offer so I asked if there are other options and he’s talking to his manager... fingers are crossed that they come back in line with that

Sounds like they are not as willing to offer refurbs. Usually it's made in the same sentence with the free battery offer.

My Genius drew it out the long way. Took two trips to the back and tried to offer to transfer the top case part in before offering.
[doublepost=1500566601][/doublepost]Anyone have success in changing color when not offered originally on a 2017 model? Just got the call that it is ready, but Silver.

I went in last night and am getting top of the line 2015 refurb for $200 (battery cost).

The reason you're not getting one is because of not having a US keyboard. That's what a ton of people on reddit have said from their experiences.

I had a UK keyboard and got a new 2017 in return.

He came back out and said they DO have the other option (which yeah I know from Macrumors of course!) to pay the replacement and get a new laptop so they’re calling tomorrow to set it all up

How do you know which model you are getting? They kept telling me they have no idea.

The genius guaranteed it'd have a dGPU which automatically means it's the upper 2015 model. I had to top of the line 2012 model.

What did you end up setting up?

Well I can’t say yet as they haven’t called on it - so I suppose I shouldn’t count my chickens at this point... more of a general cheers for the thread and I will further update when it’s settled

I had my appointment on Tuesday and it's now Friday and I still haven't been called, even though they said it would be 24-48 hours.

EDIT:
I had my call with the technician and he offered me a mid-2015 model, 16GB ram, 512GB storage, 2GB AMD graphics chip. Really cool offer, however I did push for a 2017 model on the basis that the one they offered me was slightly heavier. It's ever so slightly heavier so it's not really the most convincing reason, but he said he'll check with other staff and get back to me on Sunday. Here's hoping. Have to say though I'm really happy with what the offered me and feel slightly guilty to ask for even better.

Well, my story has now ended.

Timeline:
7/15 - (Mid-2012 15" rMBP 2.6/16/256/GT650) Went to nearest Apple Store and passed on first run at 81% @ 470 cycles. Genius went to setup battery replacement and went to back. Came back and offered to have part transferred in. Told him to look into it and he went to the back again. Genius came back saying they couldn't get it and made offer of $200 off new or $200 for CRU. I mentioned need of dedicated GPU.
While setting up the CRU option, I drained the battery to 20% and asked to test again. It failed. Was told I would get a call for credit info on Monday. Allowed to take rMBP home.
7/17 - No call. Called AppleCare and they called store. Said store would call me next day.
7/18 - Call from store admin. Gave credit info. Was told all replacement options did not have dedicated GPU and they wrote corporate asking for another option.
7/19 - Called store for update and was told they chose a 2017 tbMBP base model to ship in.
7/20 - Store admin called to tell me it had arrived. Took in rMBP and picked up CRU later that night. (No option on color, was given silver)

tl;dr Apple replaced Mid-2012 rMBP 2.6/16/256/GT650 with 2017 tbMBP base model.

Where was this? US?

Hi guys - I had a 2012 retina MBP and took it for repair. About 4 days later they called me and offered me a 2015 MBP with dedicated graphics, 16 GB ram, 512 ssd.

I'm having a problem though where the fans are running and making a lot of noise at the slightest thing. My 2012 hardly ever had the fans come on. I'm a developer and would build/compile all kinds of iOS projects and never had an issue. But, the 2015 one reminds me of when I had a MacBook Air.

Fan noise and heat is one of my biggest pet peeves becsause it is so distracting. Not sure what to do. Anyone else having this problem?

Is this a 2015 MBP thing?

Appreciate the help.

Yeah, thanks, i did that. They spin up pretty high just from basic tasks.

I also reset the SMC. I'm starting to think this is just how the 2015 is.

A guy in work got a 2015 as a replacement in this repair programme too. Will ask him if he experiences this as well. Will post back later.

Have you checked activity monitor ? Is anything running with high cpu load that shouldn't ?

I've gone over that quite a bit. When I got the laptop, I just set it up as is, no migration assistant, no time machine restore. The only I did was install Xcode and connect my iCloud account.

But, the main scenarios are this:

- immediately after login, fans go crazy. They're fine on boot up, but after I type my password it sounds like a hurricane even though there are no programs open

- I had to do a screenshare for a work demo yesterday. On my 2012, I did this all the time, fans were silent. On the 2015 - the people on the other side literally asked me "what's that noise"?

- Xcode - very, very small Xcode builds, fans again sound like jet engine taking off.

- FaceTime - loud fans

- full screen video in safari - loud fans

If you ever had an on black or white MacBook , that's plenty much the user experience
