Good lord what a mess the library became... again. The countless times that AM has arbitrarily split albums across various other albums and collections for absolutely no reason, and I’ve had to delete them and add them again and hope the corruption doesn’t reoccur. With Catalina I’m watching it happen in real time.
Example: Anna Ternheim, Somebody Outside, Swedish alternative pop album from 2004. Was in my library for years. Got messed up by AM (either after my Catalina install this morning or it happened earlier but I failed to notice), so I deleted it to start over.
I search the album in Apple Music on my iPad. Suddenly it’s missing from her selection of ”regular” albums, instead it’s considered a compilation (it absolutely ain’t one) from 2005. 11 songs. Genre: Alternative. Checks out, except the compilation thing. I add it to my library on the iPad.
I look over at Music in Catalina on my MBP. The album pops up... as two separate albums. No longer compilations, the genre is suddenly Classical (huh?), the year is suddenly 2006. Songs 1-10 end up as one album. Song 11 a separate and obviously incomplete album. I click on another artist in the artist column. Then back to Anna Ternheim. Now the two albums have merged without me doing anything... and voilà: Now there are 21 songs (1-10 have become duplicate items, 11 is still just the one). I do a ”select all” and delete the whole lot. The 22 songs disappear... only to be instantly replaced with a weird ghost iteration of the album, this time with 9 songs, no album cover and no release year. I select all and right click, but the menu has no delete option now. Great. The undeletable ghost album with 9 songs is now part of my library (but only on the MBP) and fully listenable.
So... what happens if I click ”show album in Apple Music”? Well well... now it shows me the ”compilation” ”Alternative” version (songs 10+11 have plus signs next to them) that I initially added to my library on the iPad but was split across two ”Classical” albums on the Mac. Except the release year has now changed from 2005 to 2006. I click the add button to consolidate the 9 with the 2 missing songs. Yup, now I have the ”2006 alternative compilation” in the library on the Mac. I close the Music app and open it again. Now it’s changed to the ”2006 classical” version again.
Were you able to follow any of this? No. So now you know how I feel. Spotify, why did I leave you for this mental patient of an app...
