I tried running the valley benchmark at 3008x1692 with the mvc rx580 was going 60-90 fps the fans went fast and the video stopped until a restart is that normal ? otherwise fine... its connected by a dual mini6 to single 8 pin.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/For-Mac-Pro-18AWG-Dual-Mini-6-Pin-To-8-Pin-Male-PCIe-Video-Card-Power-Cable-37cm/123499696102?ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I assume either the gpu overheats or the cable i am using cannot supply peak load ? any others who can test or advise ?

Try run the same test in Windows.

Make sure the setting in Wattman is same as the parameters inside the ROM.

e.g. PowerPlay +50%

If still suffer from freeze, then, more likely the card itself has problem.

If no freeze in Windows, then more likely software (including driver) issue.

Of course, through out the test, monitor the graphic card’s temperature, and make sure the fan noise is roughly the same as in MacOS (this is a sign that the card is under similar stress and cooling).

I will try in windows
what is 'waterman" ?
what is "powerplay" ?
i doubt the card has a real problem, it otherwise works fine so its more likely the peak power draw is too great, or the card's settings cannot handle the extreme load. I am happy to get a pixlas mod to one of my power supplies if that turns out to help. although running a benchmark is not that big a deal i guess.
how can i measure the card's temperature ?

Should be “Wattman”.

I didn’t realise that the auto correction changed the word.

It’s a part of the AMD Windows driver. You can google it.
[doublepost=1567850349][/doublepost]In Windows, Wattman can show you the temperature. You can also monitor the temperature in real time by using the overlay function.

I'm waiting for the official release to mess with it, so maybe someone who has been using the beta(s) can comment. Seems to me that Apple ought to remove the artificial FV2 block since they have no expectation that users are going to install it on MacPro5,1.

The block is still there. And that's not the only F221BEC8-specific block in Catalina; continuity support is still explicitly set to "false."

A suggestion.

Buy an EVGa PowerLink ; it balances all power fed to it and then on to the GPU.
Although originally designed for Nvidia cards it works just was well with AMD cards as well if set up correctly.

My MSI Armor RX 580 8gb is not EFI flashed and I only have two 1080 monitors but I power my RX 580 thusly ..

1. TWO X Mini 6 pin to ONE 8pin - this goes to the PowerLink's 8 pin INPUT female socket

plus . .

2. TWO x SATA to a MALE SINGLE 6 pin - this goes to the right side of the PowerLink's other
female 8 pin socket.

The combined power from "1. " & "2" go from th e PowerLink to the R9 580's 8 pin female socket

plus . . .

3. The PCIe slot power.

If I'm not wrong - correct me if I am. . . . the total is over 300w.

Note : Because the R9 580's 8 pin socket's cable lock tab now faces DOWNWARDS I had to connect the PowerLink remotely = it sits on top of the PCIe area's INTAKE fan - held firmly in place with an eraser :D.

I just ran Heaven at HIGH + Anti-aliasing X2 and was pleasantly surprised with the benchmark, it is the highest I have achieved since adding the extra two SATA to 6 Pin power.

I agree that your 4k monitors resolution and your Heaven settings are most probably demanding more power than usual. My aging eyes can't really discern the difference between 4k and my current 1080 x 1920 setup.

HEAVEN MSI Armor RX 580 8gb no EFI Sept. 7th 2019.jpg

I'll post some pics I took of the setup later tonight.

Just a suggestion.

I will run some tests later. The computer did not restart but as i said the video stopped and the fans were going crazy. In every other respect and app i have tried the card seems fine !

I don't think you would need a Pixlas mod for your RX 580 but the extra power added by the two SATA ports + 2 x Mini 6 pin to 8pin to an EVGa PowerLink PLUS power from the PCIe slot should give you all the power you need to run 4K at your monitor's resolutions.

My MSI Armor RX 580 8gb setup. ( Looks messy but it works )

( Looks much nicer, neater directly connected to my Sapphire Dual-X 7970 :D )

Why can’t you power the gpu in the normal way (2 mini 6 - 8 pin).
You don’t seem to have much in there.

I dont think there is anything wrong with powering the rx580 via 2x mini 6 pin => 8 pin connectors. I think it overheated or ran out of memory on VALLEY because it was driving too many pixels. Its been perfect since. but I know thats not a definitive answer. I am going to get a pixlas mod done on my spare mac pro because i want to try a vega gpu next, and just because i can and its out there....

UPDATE
I am not a gamer but I tried running the prologue to Total war - Attila...... at 3008x1692 it did not crash but the fans were very loud. SO i let them slow down naturally and reran the prologue at 1920x1080 and the fans were only a notch or so above normal, dramatically better. Which seems to indicate that running demanding games at 4k could cook your gpu ? Any comments from people that actually game on these machines. ?

Well, I got my MVC RX 580 8GB

1. It works. Boot screen is displayed in 4k (30HZ), during macOS load progress it changes to 200% dpi.
2. the GPU is NOT NEW, I'd say it's at least a year old, maybe even two: lots signs of wear...
3. Displayport/HDMI holes were misplaced (couldn't insert displayport cable!) and I had to disassemble the card to tune it a little. One HDMI cable has problems inserting, like it's "too tight".... Not good, really :(

PS. I believe MVC don't bother buying a new RX Saphire RX 580 card (for 195$ at the moment) but is searching for some bargains. That's why probably their patched gpus are mostly "out of stock"...

My RX580 was purchased from MVC and I have been pleased with it. While I didn't expect a brand new card, I didn't see any evidence of excessive use or wear on mine. My last card was a 980ti that I purchased retail and sent to them to have it flashed. This time I just purchased the card direct from them since the cost of a card + flashing cost was equal to what they charge for an already flashed card...

I am powering mine via a cable soldered directly to the PSU and it has been rock stable in OS X and Windows 10...

I wouldn’t be happy with that........o_O
From what I have seen, it is not cheap, and you don’t get a new card........

My card from MacStoreUk.com at least looked new, or was new.
Good to know. Still hoping they'll offer flashing for non-Pulse cards, eventually (I don't fancy shipping my Aorus card back and forth across the pond and then getting stiffed for customs charges on my own property).

OMG! For the double-pricetag he charges he doesn't even ship new parts. And this guy blames others for "stealing". o_O
He charges $150 for the flashing service (which is less than having a 980Ti flashed). Most cards new are going for ~$200, so the $350 is equal to what you would pay if you bought a card and had it flashed. Now if you question the value of the service that is another conversation all together... He is creating custom content, these are not ROMs dumped from something else... Buying a ready flashed card saves time, so if a new card is more important buy one and have it flashed. If you don't want to have more downtime time, buy one direct...

I ordered from him this last weekend, and still haven't gotten so much as a confirmation email from them with the address to send the card. I have heard in the past from people they have had issues with communicating with him....

The PayPal email receipt lists the address to mail a card for flashing service.

So we have heard that the rom chip is swapped on these cards. Perhaps his margin isn’t as high as you think it is. That’s not exactly a simple process. And perhaps some cards fail / break during this process. Is it really that big of a deal to charge a fee for a service that otherwise would not be possible?
Yeah it’s a used card ... so?
Most of us have used cars... and a lot here even have second or third hand Mac Pros (hint that means used).

I hope that cards don't break during the process... I expect to get mine back... assuming I ever get to send it.
