"Most of us have used cars..."
Yeah but I can fix a used car anywhere unlike this GPU... + probability of failure is noticeably bigger with a heavily used card

News: MVC card has broken fan profile: when idle the fan constantly starts and stops:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/v9fwabys1qzje38/MVC_RX580_Fans_problem.mp4?dl=0

Second problem: often restart doesn't work, I just see black screen after the chime sound, have to manually press and hold the power button and start again.

update: I hear the fan starting/stopping even when running GeekBench compute benchmark!

update 2: it's pretty hot idle - 54C. As I have guessed, the GPU is >2 years old (see screenshot)

What about the fans going mental running demanding tests/games at 4k ? Is that normal for a video card ? does the non-mvc card do this ?

@macguru9999, I double that! Not playable, fans are crazy.
Fan profile can be tuned in Windows, but not in macOS
[doublepost=1568281173][/doublepost]Probably it's hot because it's old, can you check the release date in GPU-Z?

Ok, final update. Two times the MVC GPU simply crashed (black screen and fans maxed out): once time in a game (Windows) then during GeekBench (macOS)

It's powered with 2 miniPCI -> PCIe 8pin, 225W matches its tech specs, original Saphire R580 worked just fine...

I had no trouble or excess noise running the geekbench scores in macos , or games at 1920x1080, only excess noise at 4k, and certainly not at idle. In general the fans are quieter than when my nvidia card is installed. Can you try running the valley benchmark at 3008x1992, or 4k, with the unflashed card in macos ? i bet the fans go mental as well. ?? I would test it but i sold my unflashed rx580. I like having the boot screen, also I have a samsung sm951 and i just booted into single user mode to force trim and thats a lot easier than flying blind with the old card...:)

I would just like to know if its a power issue or overheating .... I am going to try a pixlas mod and may get a radeon VII as well but as i said its handy at the moment having the boot screen.

Mine hasn't exhibited any of those issues... Even at 4k resolutions under full load, it has been rock stable. And the case fans are louder than the two on the GPU...

May I know if you connect one display, or multiple displays?

One display using DP cable, it's a Dell 4K 2715P... I typically run OS X at 1800P and Windows at 2160P...

He charges $150 for the flashing service (which is less than having a 980Ti flashed).
We, as far as my understanding is, are not talking about the mail in flashing service, but the preflashed cards here...

...which MVC sells around 350 bucks, which equals nearly twice of what you have to pay for a new 580 Pulse over here in Europe. So, if he doesn't even takes unused cards, to sell them preflashed, that is exactly what i would call a complete ripp-off!

Anyway, even in your flashing service example given, at least you have a new card with full warranty at the end of the process (if you get your card back some day soon).

I'd say my flashed card has broken zero rpm mode, on Windows it can be turned off to avoid fans start/stop all the time

@flyproductions
I payed 350 USD + shipping + re-shipping to EU.. That's kinda crazy considering what I got

Most of us have used cars... and a lot here even have second or third hand Mac Pros (hint that means used).
Yes! ...so we all know used products use to be a lot cheaper than new ones.

Sure no one doubts that there has to be a price for the service they offer. But taking a used 580 and selling it flashed for 350 makes the fee for the service easily exceed 200 bucks. Is that what you would call a fair amount?

Thanks for the reply. For both of you, any idea about the system ambient temperature / room temperature?

Also, any customised PCIe fan curve?

I know... see my post earlier in the thread... That's what I bought a card direct from MVC. Here in the US the card retails for around $200... You are paying the same price if you buy a card and use the flashing service or if you buy one direct from him... Warranty and age is irrelevant at that point because it is modified... I don't see an issue with either route...

If a having a new card with a warranty is important to you, then you will have to live without boot screens...

Boot screen.....what’s that..........:p
Havn’t needed it for years.

The service mvc provides is highly respected, but as others have said I would expect at least a new card for $350 (who knows how many hours of mining have been done). One of my 580 pulse cards only cost me £100 new from amazon.

Personally no.
I have a new car, my mac was bought from new, all components are bought new.

My issue is I always thought mvc cards that where flashed, where new (based on the price).

My system ambient runs around 30°C and the card idles around 38°C...

Here is a full load after ~15min:

I didn't ramp the fans up for this test, I left it set to the default automatic levels...

What software are you using for this test , mac or PC, and more importantly what resolution ??

38°C is quite cool indeed (for 30°C system ambient). Is that the temperature after cold boot? Or after some light usage, then let it idle for 5-10min?

To make it clear, I am not trying to be picky on you. But just want to know all the details, so that can let crystalidea make meaningful comparison to your situation.

That's pretty much a constant idle. It fluctuates a few degrees... I don't ever shutdown or sleep the MacPro...

Here is what idle is currently, MacPro has been on for days, idling just basic OS / web usage...

Scrolling through my CaptureOne catalog uses the GPU, temps rise to around 45°C:

No worries! I don't mind sharing! :)

The fans on mine don't spin at all without a load on the card. And I normally have the rest of the fans running around 1000rpms (just a bit higher than the system default). I have fan rules setup in iStat Menus based on NB temp...
