That's pretty much a constant idle. It fluctuates a few degrees... I don't ever shutdown or sleep the MacPro...

Here is what idle is currently, MacPro has been on for days, idling just basic OS / web usage...

Scrolling through my CaptureOne catalog uses the GPU, temps rise to around 45°C:

No worries! I don't mind sharing! :)

The fans on mine don't spin at all without a load on the card. And I normally have the rest of the fans running around 1000rpms (just a bit higher than the system default). I have fan rules setup in iStat Menus based on NB temp...

Thanks but that would mean a whole lot more if we knew what software you are using and what you were doing at the time ! also , I imagine istat just controls the case fans and cannot do anything with the gpu fan, is that right ??

News: MVC card has broken fan profile: when idle the fan constantly starts and stops:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/v9fwabys1qzje38/MVC_RX580_Fans_problem.mp4?dl=0

Second problem: often restart doesn't work, I just see black screen after the chime sound, have to manually press and hold the power button and start again.

update: I hear the fan starting/stopping even when running GeekBench compute benchmark!

update 2: it's pretty hot idle - 54C. As I have guessed, the GPU is >2 years old (see screenshot)

That likely isn’t going to be the manufacturing date of the card.
I’d bet it’s probably the date that GPUz has for the birth of this device ID aka when this variant of the rx 580 was made.

Also I seem to recall hearing that the fan curve made it so that the fan was oof until a certain temp was reached which then turned the fan on.
Perhaps you were simply hovering over / under this point.

Yes! ...so we all know used products use to be a lot cheaper than new ones.

Sure no one doubts that there has to be a price for the service they offer. But taking a used 580 and selling it flashed for 350 makes the fee for the service easily exceed 200 bucks. Is that what you would call a fair amount?
I would call it a convienence fee.

"Most of us have used cars..."
Yeah but I can fix a used car anywhere unlike this GPU... + probability of failure is noticeably bigger with a heavily used card
And I can replace the GPU with another one for less than the cost of mostly any maintenance on most used cars.

As I said that was while using Capture One... ;)

Yeah, I haven't found a way to control the fan, it worried me at first when I saw they weren't spinning, but it handles it self well. If you don't have the Mac in an air conditioned location and if you have to deal with high ambient temps, it would definitely run warmer.

I have registered iStat Menus . . how do you get the GPU Power usage in Watts to show in the GPU list ?

My setup currently shows Temp + FPS but as for power it only shows " power states".

I can't see an option for that in iStat Menu's preferences.

There’s a module you can download, but that’s only for Gen3 CPUs (i-series) - as far as I know, we’re outta luck with our Xeon W3xx or X5xx CPUs.

Thanks.

Hardware Monitor V5.5 shows my PCIe slot 1 using 26.8 ~ 27.2W ( not EFI flashed RX 580 ) at idle.
I wonder if that is accurate ? If it is I'm really surprised at how low my MSI Armor's TDP is at idle.

From what I've seen on the Net RX 580s use well over the AMD advertised 185w when stressed.

I set mine up on an EVGa PowerLink with 2 x Mini 6 pin to 8 pin cable to the PowerLink's input PLUS I also added a 2 X SATA to 6 pin to the PowerLink too.

That total power should be enough when running eg: X-Plane 11 at extreme settings.

Just ran Valley - Harware Monitor v5.5 showed PCIe slot 1 at 32.8w usage.
Valley MSI Armor RX 580 8gb .jpg

With all the newer GPUs TDP requirements we definitely need more comprehensive MacOS power usage diagnostic apps.

Doesn't sounds right to me.

As per my screen capture.

Idle power for a PULSE RX580 (factory setting) is ~6W from PCIe slot (single monitor setup).

And ~60W from the PCIe slot when running Unigine Heaven.

It shows up on the CPU drop down. But I learned recently on another thread here, that the watts reporting there is not calculated correctly. You take the wattage reported for the slot it is in and multiply it by 36...

In any case .. . 60w is pretty good power management with Heaven or Valley .. much more power and low TDPs since the old HD 5770s, 5870s, 7950s, 7970s & R9 280Xs . . but we lost easy EFI flashing

Correction to your post, should be "take the current (in A, not wattage) reported for the slot, and multiply it by 36"

~60W is just from the slot. The card was drawing another ~120W from the 8pin. Total ~180W.

Ahh yes, thanks! Sorry meant amps, but had watts in my head... But check the amperage load on the slot and x by 36

Under full load (valley running ~15min) mine pulls ~180w... iStat Menus was reporting almost 300w... The 180w is inline with the spec...

What module are you referring to? I didn't have to install anything else to get iStat Menus to read all the sensors...

Sorry - thought you were talking about CPU metrics. Tired after delidding lots of X5680s and upgrading my secondary systems.

This is what I see on my system - same as yours - no power wattage usage stats.

No - mine is 6.30, build 1087 (?!) - no updates showing when I check.

[doublepost=1568763094][/doublepost]Boom - updated to 6.31, build 1110 (downloaded direct from Bjango's site) and GPU wattage is now showing. Thanks @h9826790

Anyway, that wattage is NOT accurate. You better ignore it.
Yeah, it's deceptive... Hoping it is a bug that gets fixed, not that it something that I check often... Just knowing it's inaccurate bugs my OCD... ;)

My understanding, that number is just captured from IOReg. Since this reading in IOReg is erroneous, there is nothing iStat developer can do. Unless they figure out what's wrong, and successfully write a formula to "decode" this number.

However, from my observation, there is no simple / direct relationship between this reading and the actual power consumption.

What I suspect is "something is double counted".

e.g. IOReg reading = total board power consumption + GPU only power consumption

Therefore, the GPU power consumption is double counted.

e.g. from this Furmark test
1366-furmark-jpg.777277

If we add all slot and aux power (from Hardware Monitor), the card was drawing ~220W, but IOReg shows 393W.

Therefore, 173W difference.

If that 220W already included this 173W, then this 393W is explainable (and 173W is a reasonable number for GPU only power consumption under that situation).
[N.B. the numbers in HW Monitor and IOReg are NOT captured simultaneously. But just within 2 seconds. By considering the power draw may be fluctuating quickly, these number may be quite inaccurate to be compare directly]

However, I didn't go further to investigate, And since VRAM etc power draw is also a variable. That will be extremely hard to develop an equation to "decode" that IOreg reading accurately.

Anyway, I am now with the Radeon VII, and can't see any reading anymore

Hi I would need some help here, I sent my AMD Radeon Pulse RX580 8Gb to flash with MVC, so far everything is fine except that I'm not able to activate Filevault and every time I shut down the computer restarts by itself and gives me this screen. I've been writing to MVC but they never respond

High Sierra or Mojave? Mojave blocks Filevault with MP5,1.

You are panicking on boot, which could be related to the flashed ROM (but hard to prove).
Boot verbose and capture the panic log, or obtain the panic log from the console.app in utilities.

FileVault is indeed blocked with Mojave and 5,1 ... see here on a bypass for that block:
