I ran iTunes on its own video, and audio this morning and the CPU never went over 38 degrees C.

Carressa,

I know your probably getting tired of these tests, but could you please do the following just to remove any doubt.

1) Close all programs except iTunes.
2) Play audio in iTunes for at least 10 mins.
3) After 10 mins of ONLY playing audio in iTunes, check the CPU temp.

Your temp should be at or near it's idle temp (30C +/-)

If your temp is closer to 50C, then that would be an indication that the Mac Pro power management bug is also affecting i5/i7 iMacs.

Thanks for your time!! We do appreciate it...

Yep stayed nice and steady around 30 to 31 C. It did spike to 34 around 7 mins into it but then went back down.

Significant difference to me for an extra $180 (edu discount). Got off the phone with Apple, I upgraded my i5 to i7 just now after seeing this. Thanks!

I figured that might convince a few people to change orders and wait a little extra time to get the i7. Myself, I have no regrets!
:D

Has anyone noticed that the quadcores have different mac os build?
Mine is Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Build 10C540), but on all these screenshots there is Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Build 10C2234).

Why don't you let me take that nasty, old 12 inch Powerbook off your hands.:D

The beast is not for sale!! its like our Mac mascot! We use it to surf the web or google something if all other machines are under use. It is still one of my favorite macs.

the higher the number the faster the iMac, a way analyze how fast the machines can do a task or multiple tasks at given time

Sorry to be a bother, but does RAM and graphics cards play a part in the score? Also, how significant is the difference between the i5 and the i7 scores in real world terms?

Thanks for being so awesome Carressa! I'm not sure how many other people would have put up with being asked to run a billion tests haha.

I can't wait to pick up a base i5 from a retail store! :D

while the $200 for an i7 offers a pretty nice performance boost, I'm still sticking with the i5. Personally, I don't think it would make a difference in my normal computing tasks.

"real world" in terms of computing is different for each person.
depending on what you do on a day-by-day basis with your machine you may see different types of performance gains.

if you mostly just do email, IM, web browsing and music... you prolly won't 'feel' a difference between the 13" MacBook and n i7 with 16gb of RAM.
but if you do a lot of data encoding/decoding (ripping/watching HD videos, music), handle large image files (15mb+ per picture), do any type of rending - then you'll 'feel' a difference between the i5 and the i7 (since the i7 supports hyper-threading - aka: 2 threads per core)

btw: that is true for any computer, not just Macs ;-)

Thank you for the reply. Perhaps I should have specified my question a bit better, but making the assumption that the application in use would push the computers to flex its muscles, what would the differences be in real world terms? For example, rendering an HD video. Would the difference be mere seconds? Or many seconds? Or even minutes?

Hey Carressa

You proably just wanna play with your beautiful machine :p but when you get a chance to play Aion would you let me know how it handles it as i've got a i7 on order and if you can run Aion maxed out well.... I might just change my order to a i5 :p

Enjoy......

Why Thank you Morficus! Was really no bother it gave me somewhere to focus my excited energy:) And yes I think the i5 will be plenty of computer for me in the years to come! But i'm excited for all the new and soon to be new mac owners!! And really happy that mac finally beefed up the desktops!

And so far it seems our Quads are not running into the problems the duo 27's have been having. Lets hope that remains that way.

Acutally the husband is loading Aion on my machine now. I have no doubt it will handle it cranked on full but we should know shortly. Myself I am trapped at the office dreaming about Aluminium and glossy screens.....and strange mousess..

Really looking forward to WoW, Warhammer and Aion on a 27 inch IPS screen..... :) Gaming really doesn't get much better than that! (well for me anyway)

Just a quick one, you've probably already mentioned it but are you using windows 7 64 bit on your BC partition?

Actually, and I'm embrassed to say. ..I am running XP right now mainly due to work compatability issues. We are moving to 7 soon so that will change. From what I understand 7 should increase windows performace in BC I hope that is the case.

not sure how true that statement is, since Window 7 is not fully supported by the current version of BC.
they (apple) is saying we may see full compatibility 'maybe by the end of this year'

from the little I've read about the fact, there seems to be an issue with the default ATi driver in Windows (tho the issue does not affect 100% of the users, I've got friends running Windows 7 in BC and haven't had any issues but I have seen threads of people suggesting work-around as well)
