For the first time in a ver long time I feel like I got a true upgrade to my MacBook simply because of the Nano Texture display. This is easily the best MacBook I've ever had since I started buying them back in 2015 (and I loved the 2015 MacBook Pro).

The Nano display is absolutely spectacular. I have it all my Apple displays now (except the phone) and it is truly a game changer for using it out in public where you can't control the lighting. There is no environment that it isn't stellar to look at in. I won't ever buy another one without it.

I went to the Apple store and tested the nano texture display next to a glossy display as extensively as I could in about 20 minutes of time.

I find the nano texture incredibly intriguing. Obviously its incredibly good at what it does. But theres also this effect it gives where it feels like im looking and reading off of a paper instead of a screen.

I almost get the feeling that the nano texture display would also reduce eye strain with longer sessions on the machook.

Of course you definitely get that speckly rainbow effect on white backgrounds that all matte displays give.

Can anyone confirm this for me: in a dark room, theoretically shouldnt the nano texture look just as contrasty / deep black as the glossy display? Or would the blacks still look a bit raised? Normally thats how it works with matte displays is that when the lights are off, they look just as good.

Loving my 14” nano MBP. Wishing I got it on my M4 iPP!
It's superb on the M4 iPP, possibly even better than on the new M4 MacBook Pros. When I use both side-by-side, the iPad Pro seems better at light diffusion, but the differences may be due to the iPad Pro having a tandem OLED display.

Same (although my studio display is glossy). Really hope this comes to the iPhone.

In a dark room they appear identical. I've been using the nano texture display on my M4 /iPad Pro since it was released and it's been superb for eye strain. It's also just a wonderful thing to use - I can use my iPad anywhere, in any lighting situation, and it's consistent.

Just received my 14" M4 Pro with Nano Texture display and found it interesting that it came with a smaller polishing cloth than my M4 iPad Pro 13" with Nano Texture display. The iPad polishing cloth is almost double the size of the MacBook polishing cloth! They are also different than the Apple polishing cloths I had purchased a few years ago when they came out for sale. The ones that came with the new Nano Texture devices are much more like a smooth microfibre cloth compared the older polishing cloths.

Delight the you discovered this. I received 2024 16MBP with nano texture display and also noticed that the cleaning cloth was smaller and of a different texture than the one I purchased in 2022. I wonder if it is OK to use the 2022 cloth on the 2024 nano texture display on the 16MBP?

I wondered the same thing. For now, I’m just going to use the new cloth as they are definitely a different texture from one another.

I noticed this too as I have a nano studio display and the polishing cloth is not only smaller but much thinner. I don’t think there’s any problem between using one or the other as the texture is similar on both, and they are just microfiber cloths at the end of the day and not anything special over any other generic microfiber cloths after you’re going to buy. I wonder of they made them smaller as more of a cost measure (wouldn’t surprise me this is apple after all) or just cause they expect some people might store the cloth with the macbook. It’s thin enough that you can place it on the keyboard and close the lid without it putting pressure on the display glass.

The funny thing is my iPad Pro M4 Nano Texture cloth is much bigger. I’ve attached a photo to show the iPad cloth, MacBook cloth, and original Apple polishing cloth.

Wait a minute… which one is the third cloth? Is that the one that comes with the studio display (attached is mine next to the M4 cloth)? I assumed (as I do not have a nano iPad) that the Studio display and iPad cloths were the same as the $20 cloth you can buy separately. Or is that 3rd cloth the old one that came with unibody MacBooks? (Like the one that came with my 2011 13”?)

My photo in order is: iPad Pro M4 (Nano), MacBook Pro M4 Pro (Nano), and original Apple polishing cloth I bought separately a few years back.

I was quite surprised when I opened up my MacBook Pro this afternoon that the cloth was much smaller than the cloth that came with my 13” M4 Nano Texture iPad Pro. Exact same material for the M4 iPad Pro cloth and M4 Pro MacBook Pro cloths vs the original Apple polishing cloth, which is different.

I had a look at in person in the Apple store and it looked great. Somehow I don't like it on the iPad OLED screen but really liked it on the MacBook in the apple store. I think the Tandem OLED is so good that I felt like even compromising 1% of its performance for the sake of anti reflection would irritate me whereas the MBP is kind of a workhorse device anyway so a slight hit in some edge cases doesn't matter as much. I would absolutely spec it if I were to order a new MBP. The only downside is the slight graininess (like there's dust on the screen) on white content but most of the apps I spend time in are in dark mode anyway. I brought my eyes really close and couldn't really detect any compromise in sharpness which is the most important thing for me because I sometimes use really small fonts.

Tempted, but I'm still going to hold out until the OLED MBPs arrive. My M1 Max is still too good for me to come up with an excuse for an upgrade (even though there's a small number of tasks I do that would benefit from the increased memory and GPU improvements).

I get secondhand jealousy of the people that get to experience the Intel -> Apple Silicon transition for the first time like I did back in 2021. I get nightmares thinking about my experiences with the 2016-2019 era of Intel MacBook Pros.

I'm sure the thought behind this is that you'll be cleaning your iPad screen a lot more often than your MacBook screen due to the fact that you are constantly touching your iPad and rarely, if ever, will touch your MacBook Pro screen.

I went to a different apple store today and saw the same thing as last time. They only have to show the nano texture in the 14" display (this time there were 2x MacBooks with the technology, both 14").
I compared again against the glossy in text, pictures from the web, etc, and I still prefer the glossy one. Better clarity, contrast and perceived brightness. The nano texture looks permanently nano dirty when up close because of the light diffracting in every direction.

But still the same issue. Viewing angles seem better in the nano texture display. Not sure if it is just a good side effect of the matte finish, that maintains good quality when off-axis, but in the glossy one the whites turn greenish for example and seems lower quality.

Strange that in two different Apple Stores they don't have 16" with nano texture to compare.

I wouldn't like to think that this year apple is reserving their best panels to mount the nano texture so that people like it better, and they can't get the same kind of quality in 16" and because of that they don't show in the stores...

I would like to see more research on this topic from these reviewers purchasing (or getting loaned) several machines.

Typically I think both LG and Samsung (anyone else) manufacture displays for MacBooks... it could be interesting to be able to see this information in the displays with/without the nano texture.

Why aren't the nano textures stocked in the store? Not sure why any one would pick glossy except for the $150 upcharge.

I respectfully disagree with many of the comments here.

Contrasts is reduced.
Sharpness is reduced.
White backgrounds appear to have a speckle or dirtiness to them which is annoying with text.

My LG monitors matte finish appears to be superior. I don’t like it.

No Apple Stores around here have a 16" with Nano either. It seems to be universal.

And yeah, not that I think there's a conspiracy, but is there some reason they don't want to show us a 16" with Nano? Because that's the model I'd be getting. I don't like that I can't see it in person first.

The nano display on the MacBook Pro looked sharper than the nano display on the Studio Display. Perhaps it's because of the pixel density (254 ppi versus 216 ppi).

From display expert Ross Young, this may further support why the nano display on the MacBook Pro looks better to me than the one on the Studio Display:

Big Apple display news, they have adopted quantum dots for the first time. The latest MacBook Pro's (M4) use a quantum dot (QD) film rather than a red KSF phosphor film.

In the past, Apple went with the KSF solution due to better efficiency and lack of cadmium (Cd), but the latest Cd-free QD films are very efficient, feature as good or better color gamut and better motion performance.

Edit: MacRumors covered this in more depth.

Kinda weird how Ross is talking about improved motion performance, I haven't read anyone noticing that.

better efficiency might be part of the reason why Apple is allowing the panel to crank up to 1000 nits in outdoor environments now
