Charleston

Any more word on the Charleston, SC store?

I just am finding it really hard to believe that Charleston is on Apple's radar.

As far as location, King Street would be the logical spot. It has heavy tourist foot traffic, as well as a mix of high-end national and local stores and boutiques (including Saks Fifth Avenue, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Sharper Image, etc.) – basically the same stores I see in malls where Apple plops their retail stores.

As far as architecture, Charleston has very stringent requirements for remodeling. Any structure over 75 years old cannot be torn down unless it falls down or is damaged by fire. All buldings must conform to the basic design of their surrondings. In other words, the big gray metal box will never fly downtown. Granted, this is presumably why Apple was meeting with the architecture review board.

On the possible negative side, not only is there no Apple store in Charleston, there is actually no Apple reseller of any sort in Charleston or the surrounding area. Going Apple here means committing to a life of mail-order or driving 3 hours to Charlotte.

I'm not sure if the lack of an existing Apple presence helps or hurts us. I tend to make the connection that a lack of any Apple reseller here means there really isn't a market for one.

So - would the Apple store cater more to the tourists or the locals?

Maybe Charleston is on Apple's radar. I'd just love to have a little more confirmation on that.

With 3 retail stores in the Toronto, Canada, area, I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying being able to just go there when I need to. There has been an Apple Canada for a long time, but this makes Apple users feel at home, even if it is a huge U.S. corporation bankrolled with billions of dollars.

FYI:

first colony isn't letting people queue up. we were there at 2-ish this morning and they shooed us away. they said that they didn't want people congregating and causing a scene or anything.

....wtf?!??!

I was first in line at the First Colony Store. Arrived there at 2 A.M. I have been first at the Memorial City and Southlake store too!:D

More on the troubles around a new location in San Luis Obispo.

Biz Buzz; Future of SLO Apple store remains murky
The Tribune
The space at 899 Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo — the location of what had been expected to be an Apple Computer store — will be reviewed Monday by the city’s Architectural Review Commission. Plans have changed substantially, however, since discussion began earlier this year, leaving the possibility of an

Apple store downtown uncertain.

"The project is quite modified from the original application," said Jaime Hill, associate planner for the city of San Luis Obispo. "The facade changes are significantly scaled back."

The current design review proposes dividing the 5,800-square-foot location into two spaces — a 4,800-square-foot store at Morro and Higuera streets and a 1,000-square-foot space next door. The proposal also seeks to add a second entrance on Morro Street and fill in the side-street windows with bricks.

With all of the changes, it’s no longer clear that Apple is coming to San Luis Obispo. In the earlier plan by building owner Copeland Properties, the renderings clearly indicated the trademark Apple in the building signage.

"The Copelands are being very close-lipped," said Claire Clark, the city’s economic development manager. "We do not know if Apple is the tenant."

Apple had previously asked to remove an exterior pillar and install stainless steel over the existing brick storefront. The design was initially approved in July by the Cultural Heritage Committee, which set out several conditions for the Cupertino-based retailer to achieve in order to be consistent with downtown design. Changes included reducing or eliminating the use of stainless steel, retaining the windows on Morro Street and keeping the bulkhead in place.

The ball has been in Apple’s court since then. Several meetings with the review commission had been continued as the retailer sought additional time to make design changes.

There remains at least one sign that Apple is coming to the area: The company’s Web site continues to post job openings for the Higuera location.

Calls to Apple Computer and Copeland Properties were not returned by press time.

New Michigan store location

Apple has begun recruiting staff for a new store in the Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This will be Michigan's fourth store. A likely timeframe for the store's opening is in late spring to late summer of next year.

New South Florida location

Apple has begun recruiting staff for a new store in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This will be the seventh store in the Greater Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Boca Raton West Palm Beach metro area. ifoAppleStore checks in on the announcement with the additional information about the specific location:
Fort Lauderdale Store Planned
Apple is filling in retail store coverage between its Aventura and Boca Raton stores on the lower east coast of Florida with a planned store along Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. The 3/4-mile stretch of shops and restaurants is just east of downtown and adjacent to Riverwalk. The store could open by May 2007, and will add to a string of six existing stores from Miami to Palm Beach Gardens that is considered the region’s “Golden Mile.”

Boston Update

Thanks to ifoAppleStore for the news tip on the progress toward a high-profile store in Boston. Here is the story from the Boston Globe,

Apple store gets final Boston approval
Apple Computer Inc. has received approval from Boston's Zoning Board of Appeals -- the last hurdle needed to proceed on plans to build a new three-story store on Boylston Street near the Prudential Center.

Apple is proposing to demolish the building at 815 Boylston Street, which formerly housed a Copy Cop store, and construct a 21,350 square-foot space with a glass facade and green roof.

The zoning board's approval will be finalized in paperwork over the next month and Apple can then start applying for permits. Construction on the Back Bay store is expected to last a year.

Meanwhile, the excellent downtown Philadelphia location I posted about appears to have been taken up by frigging Sam Goodys.

Come on Apple - it's about time we got a Center City store!!! If I could walk to one in Pittsburgh, I should be able to here. :(

Bah! Be thankful you have one! ;)

Really, lucky people. Lucky duck, the closest one from me is 3 hours, but I count myself lucky so I am not complaining. Can't really go for the classes though. :( But I was able to pick up my mac from the Charlotte store. :D

Apple is now looking for staff for a new store location in the Houston area (lining up already, katie?) This will be the fifth store in the Houston metro area, and it will open in the Baybrook Mall (a General Growth Prop. location) in the Houston suburb of Friendswood, Texas (looks to be close to the Lyndon Johnson Space Center.) Having posted the new location on its web page it usually takes 6 to 9 months from posting to opening, so a 2007 opening in July - September seems likely.

You heard it here first. ;)

Second Scotland store

Appleinsider is reporting that Apple will open a store in Edinburgh, Scotland during 2007. This is in addition to the already confirmed plans for a store on Buchanan street in Glasgow, posted previously in these pages. I'm going to break out the single-malt in celebration! ;)

savanahrose, sorry, I've no further word on a Charleston store. If I find anything I will be sure to let you know both in this thread or I'll send you a pm if you want.
