Apple has posted a new page in its "Job Opportunities" section of its website to begin staff recruitment for the George Street store in Sydney, Australia. It also appears the rumors about the Melbourne store are way ahead of the actual progress of opening a store there.

Glad you linked that page.I went to the USA and found this :

http://www.apple.com/jobs/us/store/

It lists "Theatre Manager"

Do most Apple stores have Theatres?

Do most Apple stores have Theatres?

No, only the high-profile stores have theatres in the stores. That would include stores like Fifth Avenue, Soho, North Michigan, San Francisco, The Grove, Regent Street, Ginza, etc. Of the upcoming stores, Boylston and Glasgow would be likely candidates for theaters.

Here is the updated list of upcoming FY2007 stores.

10. Waterside Shops - Naples, Florida
12. Coconut Point Mall - Bonita Springs, Florida

Yup, I know about them. Apple approached me about being a Mac Genius for them this past June. Kinda pissed me off, too, that they put me through all the hoops and crap, then wound up hiring a staff of early 20-somethings instead of someone with long-term actual hands-on Mac use/Mac tech experience. C 'est la vie...

Do you know first hand that the hires are all "20-somethings"? I only ask because out here I see folks of all ages working in the stores. Is this only a SF thing, I wonder?

I work for an Apple reseller, and I am 20-something along with my fellow 20-something coworkers, and some of those people really know their stuff, even going back to the 1984 machines. So just because they are young, doesn't mean they aren't qualified to sell Macs and provide great knowleagable service.

Maybe you were overqualified. Also, a lot of mac customers who know their stuff, well, they know their stuff but they would not make great sales people.

Coconut Point to open 2/24

Apple has announced the opening of the Coconut Point store in Estreo, Florida, a part of the Fort Myers metro area, on February 24th at 10:00 am. This is the first store in Southwest Florida, and the 11th in the state. Another store in Naples is expected soon. The usual giveaways apply.

Lishen, kid, I've been troubleschoooootin' thesh here com-hic-putersh schince before ya was born. Hic.

</sarcasm>

Well, I certainly am not underqualified. I think they just want a bunch of trendy, hip people working in their stores as a take-off on their commercials. Seriously, I don't have a clue what Apple wants. Ever since MW/SF, I think Apple and I are now on two completely different pages, and that marks the first time in a looooooooooong, long time (actually since before -- or not long after -- you were born) that this is the case.

I'm far from broken up over it, though. This is the subject for a completely different kind of thread, but the short version is that I have really soured on the computer industry ever since it got in bed with the entertainment industry and DMCA, etc., happened. Professionally speaking, I've actually left the tech industry and now look at it from afar.

Good luck in your own career, though.

Maybe you would have made for a great manager, I don't know. But, in my not-going-to-be-doing-it-for-the-rest-of-my-life Sales Manager Retail job, I actually prefer a more mature adult, because they are more responsible, usually have better work ethic, don't have to baby-sit, etc...However, sometimes they are over-qualified or the $$ isn't there so they find something else...I have never stepped foot in an Apple Store, I work for a national chain (Canada) and we sell all pc's and macs and service them, but I don't know what a career working in an Apple Store would be like...It's probably great.....

Anyways, good luck in your career as well.

Kansas (Kansas City - 1,776,000)

??? Huh?

Kansas City isn't even in Kansas. It's on the border, but the population on the Kansas side is like 20,000 or something.

Wichita has 2.7 million people and growing. I just drove 2.5 hours to Oklahoma City today with two kids to play with a Mac Pro before I buy one. There are two big malls to build in here in Wichita (I would choose Towne East since it has higher-dollar stores), and there's a big enough population here. Probably big enough to support a standalone store. It was not an enjoyable trip (tolls, traffic, freaking loads of time and money eating out, gas -- ugh)... An Apple Store in Wichita would be a hit.

The purpose of the list you quoted from is to show states that could get their first store and the largest metro area that could be the place for such stores. Often metro areas, such as Kansas City, overlap state borders, and even if the bulk of the metro area lies on one side or the other it is still the size of the market that attracts store planners to the location. This is especially true in the placement of a store such as the Christiana Mall store in Delaware. It is the size of the whole Philadelphia market that brought the store, not the relatively small population that lives across the border. The situation in Kansas City is analogous, and likely represents the best bet for a Kansas store.

I hope I've explained my original post for you, but if you have any other questions I'd be happy to respond.

Construction at the Boston store

For those who haven't seen it, ifoAppleStore and Archintosh are playing host to a web cam of the construction of the Boylston Ave. store in Boston. Here is a shot of the state of destruction of the old building, clearing away the location for the sparkling glass structure to be built this year.

Kansas City already has an Apple Store (Country Club Plaza), leaving a metro population of close to 3 million people in Wichita still a 2.5-3 hour drive to an Apple store. A trip to my closest Apple Store costs me about $75 in gas and food. I can't shell that out whenever I want to get my Apple answers in-person or pick up some new hardware without a long shipping wait and added costs.

Wichita, Kansas has a metro area of three million people? If that were true it would likely already have a store. The 2000 census had it at under 600,000. I have it listed as the 19th largest US metro area without a store, or just now coming into view as a likely target for Apple to place a store there. It isn't even close to KC in size, but it may get a store before KC gets its second, and even if doesn't there is no guarantee that a second KC store would be placed on the Kansas side of the border. This is all guess work based on past trends, but I'm not confident of either scenario this year. What I am confident of is that Apple will get around to markets both the size of Wichita and placing a second store in the KC market. As long as the stores make money for Apple they will grow.

btw, here's the list of the twenty largest US metro areas without a Apple Store or one officially planned.**

  1. New Orleans, Louisiana
  2. Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina
  3. Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina
  4. Dayton, Ohio
  5. El Paso, Texas
  6. Bakersfield, California
  7. Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
  8. Harrisburg/ Lebanon, Pennsylvania
  9. Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
  10. Toledo, Ohio
  11. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
  12. Youngstown/Warren, Ohio
  13. Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida
  14. Little Rock, Arkansas
  15. McAllen/Edinburg, Texas
  16. Stockton/Lodi, California
  17. Charleston, South Carolina
  18. Wichita, Kansas
  19. Mobile, Alabama
  20. Columbia, South Carolina

New UK store

Apple has begun recruiting staff for a new store at the Midsummer Place shopping centre in the Buckinghamshire city of Milton Keynes. Apple currently has nine stores open in the UK and is also planning to open a store this year in Glasgow - to bring the total to at least eleven by year's end.

Yeah, my brain was thinking too fast. The STATE population is about 3 million. NO CLUE what I was thinking. The entire metro Wichita area is about 850,000, according to the dude from city hall I talked to when setting up my business when I moved here four months ago. (Granted, he was probably skewing the numbers higher considering his position.)

My bad.

Sayhey,

Gary @ infoAppleStore has Tulsa store opening Mid July to late July  :D

i might be able to visit the new store ..

linky

Did Gary finally acknowledge the Tulsa store? I tried to get him to post it a couple of times to no avail, but you see something on his site about it? It is in the Woodland Hills mall, and such stores usually take 6 to 9 months from the beginning of staff recruitment to opening. That would fit with a summer opening date. If you can visit, post some pictures if you can, ok? Always love to see macrumors members' picts.

New Kentucky Store?

ifoAppleStore is reporting Apple will open its first store in Kentucky at the Oxmoor Center in Louisville. Although this is yet to be confirmed by Apple, this would be big news for long suffering mac fans in the blue grass state. As readers of my posts know, Louisville has for far too long been among the top metro areas on my lists of areas without an Apple store, so here's hoping this rumor is true. I'll post any confirmation I can find. Good luck.

Five new locations

Apple has begun hiring staff for five new locations on its website. This confirms some previously reported rumors and some new surprises. The new stores will be in Louisville, Kentucky (Oxmoor Center;) Los Gatos, California (23 N. Santa Cruz Ave.;) Holyoke, Massachusetts (Holyoke Mall at Ingleside;) Madison, Wisconsin (West Town Mall;) and Huntsville, Alabama (Bridge Street Town Centre.) This is the first store in Kentucky and only the second store location acknowledged in Alabama (the Summit in Birmingham has been known for a while but is still unopened.) The West Town location is the first store in Wisconsin outside of the Milwaukee metro area and only the third planned for the state (Bayshore Mall in suburban Milwaukee is expected to open this year as well.)The Holyoke Mall store is a confirmation of a store posted on the mall's web site last year and is the first Massachusetts store scheduled to open outside of the Boston metro area. And finally the Los Gatos store has been rumored, but this confirms the first new opening in the SF Bay metro area for quite a while.

iPhil, I see the page, but Gary hasn't posted anything on the main page, and this after I alerted him twice about the listings. Don't know why. Anyway, you can apply for the store through Apple''s website.
