From my take, the real difference with iPad in that it is not a "real" computer in the sense that it can do all the things that this product will do. Apple has approached this differently than the others like HP--and is trying to provide sometime different--an alternative to the do-everything at all cost solution.

Bob, EXACTLY...I am right there with you....wanted something different, not more of the same.

Yeah..but..

No one is shipping thumb drive installers (mainstream) and making an ISO disk to thumbdrive and be a HUGE pain in the butt sometimes...not just a "copy this CD/DVD to thumbdrive command" on all installs...

Not too hard, I just use imgburn, but you'd still need another computer to do so :(

You're both right, it's just a matter of approach. The iPad has apps that attempt to make reading newspapers or magazines easier. It can also use the Web. The HP device will be able to use the Web. You can get all the same content in both places, with few minor exceptions maybe. The difference is interface.

I agree. I also think that while special apps were needed for iPhone size device because of the small screen, it's not the case anymore with iPad. As a result, nobody is going to build special apps for accessing something that is easily available on WWW. There might be special cases where providers might want to use the benefits of the touch-screen.

You are just having comprehension problems, that's all. The original post was about content. Try to name one single content source/provider that is available exclusively for iPad. You can't. It's that simple.

WTF are you talking about. No, I didn't get it wrong I just don't understand what you mean. Are there apps that are SPECIFICALLY made for the iPad? Uh..yeah. Is there music availabe on iTunes only? uh..yeah. Is there digital media available on iTunes only? uh...yeah.

Did you mean programs like Adobe Crap-photo?
Did you mean a major motion picture maker who only makes movies for them?
What 'content' are you talking about?

And...weren't you guys just complaining how Apple "controls" the content? Now you are arguing there is no exclusivity?

What's the deal? What do yo mean? You still haven't elaborated on what you want it to have? You act like you just want a bland, ordinary, all the same kind of device like a...oh...never mind..forgot that's what the topic we are discussing...

No one will write applications for things that are already on the internet...uh...wrong. Or just wishfull thinking on your part.

"SPECIAL" use for touchscreen? Hahah...Phones, GPS, computers of all types...heck, my wife was laughing at an ad in a magazine that had a touchscreen vibrator. No real use for a touchscreen? that's the dumbest thing I have heard. It has become prevelant in many things and will keep getting more mainstream. HP has a whole LINE of touchscreen desktop computers.

You can't seperate the disparate parts of an iPad for judgement..it's a package deal. The OS works with the hardware to produce an 'experience'. It's just nit-picking to say this and that won't be popular...you have to take it as a whole.

Any Windows PC, including this HP slate, can run iTunes. The difference is really how you get to the content, not the content itself.

So if I buy a copy of Microsoft Office, I need to first rip it to a thumbdrive? (not that I can imagine using programs like outlook without a mouse).

Yup, you got it :D I backup my programs to .iso's anyways

You can pickup a USB DVD burner for like fifty bucks and just use that, no need to rip to thumb drive.

The Apple competitors don't understand art. When Ivy talks about removing noise and having only what's necessary, HP and the Microsoft people just add and add and add clunky things.
Just look at the HP slate cover flow system. Looks awful.
Honestly, would you even imagine taking pictures with a 9.7 inches display? Or take a video with it? What's the point? Every phone takes pictures and videos.
And yeah, at 9 seconds in the video, you can clearly see how thick it is. It's more an iPack than an iPad.
It reminds me of the awfully lame "presentation" of this device by Steve Ballmer at CES. Even though it had Windows 7 and here it seems to be an HP software.

At first, I thought it was a good idea from HP to try to get out a tablet just before Apple. But it's been months and there is no expectation building for this product. They started by showing a dumb prototype and that's it.

Honestly, it will be exactly like with the iPod and the iPhone, Apple will dominate the tablet market for years and years to come.

the music + lens flare was epic. hahaha... hey competition is good for everyone! bring on the touchscreen tablets!

Being a "real" computer, HP Slate will have access to everything on the WWW and not a single content provider offers something exclusively to iStuff at the expense of the billions of WWW users.

So what applciation is Apple "holding back" for you in their 10's of thousands of apps? Porn?

Here come the apple fanboys why can't we all just get along. The ipad doesn't have these features the same reason the iPhone didn't have copy and paste for such a long time people are conformist.

Wow, the 've ripped off the home button, the glass, the bezel, even f.cking cover flow and they still managed to make it look like sh it, and thick as a brick, pun intended.

Good luck selling this garbage running windows 7, or whatever crap it runs, good luck getting any apps for it, and good luck with that battery...

And good luck actually rolling out this device, no release date so far from what I know... I hope it comes in time for ipad rev. b.

The more it changes, the more it stays the same, just like the pc world always has been, second rate copied apple products.

Look at how thick it is . . .

all the better to grip it! I have a touch and a BB. My BB is far easier to hold onto. sure it weighs more, but the touch is very easy to drop. drop it on the wrong surface and all the "coolness" of that Apple product vanishes in an instant. Apple fans really, really dig thinness, don't they? Product anorexia. :)

Yup. With all the ports , Flash and camera etc. any new tablet will have a problem keeping up with the iPad's battery life.

Look at the Joo Joo. It only gets 5 hours. Max.

dude, my Touch won't even surf the web for 5 solid hours and I love my touch. Battery life may be less than the ipad, but MAYBE, just MAYBE the Slate will be uber cool enough in functionality that a bit less battery life may not be a deal breaker for many consumers. EVERYTHING in life is a tradeoff. we want more functionality, we may pay more in terms of price, size, weight, and battery life.

So HP created their own UI to cover the Windows 7 OS; how will they handle Windows apps that were not designed to be run by touch? I see a lot of frustration.

How do I right-click?
